  1. As far as your other question, each "SF2x.exe" file will look for mods within it's own mod directory. So SF2:V will look in the SF2:V mod directory, SF2:I will look in the SF2:I directory, etc. If you want to see your mods, run the .exe file associated with that mod directory. Or, put all your mods in the same mod directory and run that associated exe file. FC
  2. It's real simple. When you ran the install program for each individual sim, when it asked you what directory to install it in, did you install it in the same directory the other sims were installed in? If yes, you merged the installs. If no, you have a separate install. Look in the directory of your various installs (not the mod folders). If you see multiple "SF2x.exe" files, you have a merged install directory. If not, you don't. FC
  3. I think monorail systems are really one of those things that needs to have a perfect storm of conditions to be effective...and even then, you may have to make compromises to accommodate realities. Vancouver, BC installed an elevated train system for the Olympics. It was very expensive because it was so expansive. Elevated in some places, buried in others. But in the end, it works pretty well. Far reaching, cheap, and frequent service. It may not ever make it's money back in absolute coin, but there are side benefits of it being in place...image, less traffic congestion, etc. FC
  4. No. 2 different flight sims. FC
  5. Wrench, can you not get the dome to rotate? Have you tried making it an engine? FC
  6. The student version works just fine with the exporter...assuming you have the proper version of 3ds MAX (currently 3ds MAX 2009 32-bit). FC
  7. I actually created a floating aircraft carrier while testing the idea of a 'Crimson Skies' mod. The problem (it sounds like WBS ran into the same issue) is that carriers won't work above a certain altitude...and that altitude isn't very high. HOWEVER, if you want to make an ID4 mothership that is attackable, and has weapons to fight back, AND can be at any altitude, that part is easy. http://combatace.com/topic/26637-as-of-right-now/page__view__findpost__p__143480 FC
  8. JM, That and the energy/resources you have to input into the fuel when you grow and convert it. FC
  9. There's something different about this one... FC
  10. Alternative fuels do work and provide power just fine in jet engines...efficiency and envelope limits are the only issues. If you can burn it in a car, you can burn it in an aircraft. In fact, we already use a less efficient fuel in jets...kerosene. The reason it's used instead of gasoline is weight. The majority of the thrust of a modern airliner engine is not from the hot turbine, but from the spinning fans. Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_biofuel I could go on. In short, there is nothing technical preventing the widespread adoption of alternative fuel for aviation. It's a matter of infrastructure and energy conversion efficiencies (ratio of energy derived from fuel vs energy and resource needed to make the fuel). FC
  11. I'm seeing a lot of typical assumptions about DRM that are just plain wrong. No developer assumes that DRM is foolproof or cannot be broken. This is probably the best article ever written about PC piracy: http://www.tweakguides.com/Piracy_1.html It's a LONG article, but well worth the read to get smart on what the issues are and why developers do what they do. Read the article, muse and think about it a bit, then examine why certain TW decisions were made. FC
  12. The USAF has been testing synthetic fuel as well and has had pretty good results. Jet engines have a unique advantage compared to something like an internal combustion engine. Basically, as long as it can be aerosoled, it can be burned in a jet engine. Unlike an internal combustion engine which may need a rebuild to adjust the compression ratio depending on the fuel, a jet engine really only needs to adjust the fuel/air ratio for each type of fuel. In other words, the engines are not what will hinder the use of alternative fuels. FC
  13. Big friggin' deal. It's research...and that's it. The article itself says the project isn't going any farther. Basically it's just slightly more formal than brainstorming. I'd be more concerned about emergent drone AI than this. FC
  14. Congrats and enjoy that retirement! FC
  15. I've always been bothered by the awards system in the USAF when I was in. EPR numbered rating system, OPRs having to fill every blank spot, awards making it sound like you defecate platinum for simply doing your job. I hated watching my bosses jump through hoops trying to make my awards (PCS metals) sound sexy. I was an average to above average pilot and instructor. I didn't want additional responsibility...I just liked to fly. I did my job and did it well. I didn't bend a jet, deliberately break a rule, or shine my ass. But I wasn't writing flight manuals during test, facing the elephant on a daily basis, or saved a bus load of nuns. I was happy enough either being the sharp end of the spear, or making sure those who were going to be got every tool they needed to make sure they were going to survive and thrive in a hostile environment and beyond. Treat those who meet the standard with respect. But truly recognize the exceptional ones...make the medals and awards and '5's on the EPRs mean something. FC
  16. Realistically, the answer is no. You can make a mod that will show you a picture of the target...but there is no modification that will make 'taking a picture' a condition of completing the mission successfully. FC
  17. That MiG has been around for some time now...along with some privately owned Su-27s. Nice to see it getting some work! FC
  18. OBL is dead...like this thread. FC
  19. Someone else addressed this...actually said the LODs were looking for both. It's not something that is changed in the inis...it's a game engine/LOD request only. The best thing to do is check the models. The stock models (patched to March 2012 I assume) will always look for JPEGs for solid files, and DDS for transparent files. Third party...I'm not really sure unless they're the absolute latest iterations. FC
  20. 'pults have steam. No working fresnel lens (though in theory you could create one if you had access to the MAX file). No A/A refueling. FC
  21. You sure you didn't hit the end of the deck and fell off? FC
  22. "I could really use another career broadening opportunity.." FC
