Updated Eastern Front Terrain
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I have uploaded the Galicia2 version 3 terrain - still awaiting administrator approval. In addition to the terrain, the download includes all the necessary ground objects along with instructions for installing in both FE1 and FE2. Available here : https://combatace.com/files/file/15469-galicia2/ -
Updated Eastern Front Terrain
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Thank you all for your comments. I think anyone who has done terrains will agree with me: It's hard to stop because you keep thinking of more things too add, and things that were finished months ago don't seem to be good enough anymore. There are still a lot of things that I would like to do but if I'm not careful, I will never be finished. I decided that it's good enough for now; maybe I will make a new version later. I am writing the installation instructions now and will upload the package later today or early tomorrow.. -
For several years, I've been working on an improved Galicia terrain for the Eastern Front. I am (FINALLY) finished. I am doing some tweaking, gathering the parts and getting everything organized for upload. I hope to upload the finished package in a few days. The improved terrain includes new Farm and City tiles, new TODs for most of the tiles, more target areas, and a lot of eye candy. New features include more buildings in the cities, very small villages/farms, cavalry camps, field hospitals, static aircraft on all the airfields, and more active battle grounds. I have added a lot more detail to the whole terrain. Ojcar's Armchair Aces campaigns will not be affected.

Reworked Italian Terrain (Caporetto)
Stephen1918 replied to gterl's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Beautiful terrain with lots of detail. I'm looking forward to flying in it. -
No, I do have both versions, but I still prefer the first generation of First Eagles.
-
Hello lofty_c, welcome to First Eagles. I think you'll enjoy it. In First Eagles 2, the "Terrains" folder is plural, add an "s" to your folder name. (In First Eagles 1 it is singular, so the installation instructions can get confusing.) Let us know if this solves your problem.

I have seen several screen shots of the Taube. Please note that the elevator on the Taube was operated by wing warping. In my version of the Taube, the elevators should not be moving. If your elevators are moving, go into the file named Taube_DATA.ini and in the sections under // Control Surfaces [LeftElevator] and [RightElevator] delete any entries for ModelNodeName= and AnimationID= For both surfaces, there should be nothing after the equal signs ModelNodeName= ReverseModelOrientation= AnimationID= Or you can just download the plane again.

Siemens-Schuckert D.I uploaded
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
There is nothing in the 3D model that controls the speed of the engine animations. The speed is controlled by the game engine. The model maker creates several versions of the prop (static prop, slow prop, fast prop, damaged prop) and attaches them to the prop shaft. The game engine spins the prop shaft and calculates the RPM of the engine based on the throttle setting (controlled by the user) and the settings in the [Engine] portion of the plane's data.ini. Then the game switches the version of the prop based on the RPM settings in the [Engine] settings. I didn't notice the problem until after I read the postings by Crawford and VonS. I don't know what settings in the engine data control how fast the engine speeds up/slows down. You could probably get some change by playing with the RPM settings that VonS mentioned. -

You'll notice that my SSW D.I incorporates all the changes you mentioned, as well as a different shape to the rudder, and different cross-section in the fuselage. You can even see the steel tubing framework in the cockpit view. The V-struts were steel tubing, but they had a wooden fairing attached to reduce drag, so they didn't have to tape the struts like the French did. I still call it a copy because the Germans started by studying the Nieuport 17, but as you say, there were many differences in the German version. -
Thanks for the books Crawford.

Siemens-Schuckert D.I uploaded
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I don't know if this is the early or late version. there were also two different kinds of tail skids. When I come across conflicting reference material, I just make the version I like best. The Siemens-Schuckert D.I was well liked by the pilots who flew them, but there are reports that they were often mistaken for French planes (since they were virtually identical) and sometimes took damage from friendly fire. When the Fokker DR1 came out, the SSW-D1s in the flight schools were used to train German pilots for flying rotary engine planes. -
The Sikorsky S-16 is my favorite WWI plane. I like the look of the wings and the landing gear. I have collected a lot of information about the S-16 over the years, but I don't have the book you mentioned.

A new version of the Sikorsky S-16 flat deck has been uploaded. The S-16 flat deck is here: https://combatace.com/files/file/12051-sikorsky-s-16-flatdeck/ The S-16 round deck is here: https://combatace.com/files/file/11991-sikorsky-s-16/

Siemens-Schuckert D.I uploaded
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I'm afraid not. The props and spinners are part of the model built by the modder. In fairness, my props and spinners use about twice as many polygons than the flat ones do and probably slow the game down a tiny bit. -
The Armstrong-Whitworth FK8 would be a great addition to First Eagles, both on the Western Front and on Palestine Front. I have looked into it and started collecting data for it some time ago. My immediate goal, however, is to finish a revision of the Galicia terrain, which I've been working on for a couple of years. If I can get enough time away from the real world, I'll have the terrain finished later this summer.

Thanks Mike. There were a lot of variations of the S.16 and it stayed in service from early 1915 right through to the end of the Russian Civil Wars. Based on what I've seen in photographs, the flatdeck version seems to have been more common, but I don't know for sure. There were also two-seat versions, and there may have been a seaplane version. Last week, I started revisions on the flatdeck version (with ailerons on both wings) and it will be finished soon.

I have uploaded a new plane - the Siemens-Schuckert D.I. It was a copy of the Nieuport 17, with a different engine and a few other minor differences. Production was delayed so it wasn't used very much on the Western Front. It saw more service on the Eastern Front. My upload includes a 3 color camo skin, a full set of number decals, and a fully functional cockpit. My skinning templates are included. Ojcar has made a new FM for this plane, it flies a little heavier than the Nieuport, but has a slightly more powerful engine. I have also included a sound file recorded by Nixou.

View File Siemens-Schuckert D.I The German Siemens-Schuckert D.I was a direct copy of captured Nieuport 17s. The most important difference was in the engine. The Siemens Schuckert Werke (SSW) D.I used a geared Siemens-Halske Sh.I engine which produced 1800rpm. The spinner nose and open bottom cowling were necessary to help cool the engine. A bigger prop required a taller landing gear. Problems with engine production delayed the release of the SSW D.I. The Albatros D.III was already available by the time the SSW reached the front. The Albatros was a much superior plane, and was less likely to be mistaken for a French plane. The SSW D.I only served for a short time on the Western Front, they served longer on the Eastern front. My Siemens-Schuckert D.I includes a three color camo skin, a full set of number decals, a fully functional cockpit, and damage nodes for the wings. My skinning templates and a sound file for the engine are included in the download. Historical Notes: I do not have a sound file for the Siemens-Halske Sh.I engine, I am using Nixou's sound for the Le Rhône 110 hp engine instead. Credits: My thanks to Ojcar once again for making the excellent data.ini file for this plane. My thanks to Nixou for making the sound file for the Le Rhône 110 hp engine. Installation instructions: For FE1: Unzip the file and move the folder named "SiemensSchuckertD1" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. If you don't already have it, move the file named "Lerhone110m1" from my Sounds folder into your Sounds folder. For FE2: Unzip the file and move the folder named "SiemensSchuckertD1" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Aircraft folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "SiemensSchuckertD1". Move the folder named "D" from the Aircraft/SiemensSchuckertD1 folder into the Decals/SiemensSchuckertD1 folder you just made. Lebed 7
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2 File Announcements
Looking at the top photo, it looks like the Lebed VIII also had ailerons - the Lebed VII used wing warping. -
I have uploaded a completely new version of the Sikorsky S-16. It was not produced in very large numbers, and was quickly outclassed by other planes, so it wasnt one of the "great" planes, but I really like the way it looks. The new version has all new LODs with higher detail and lower poly count. All new skins and decals are included. Ojcar made a new FM as well. Your comments are welcome.

Lebed 7
Stephen1918 replied to Stephen1918's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2 File Announcements
The British Tabloid was used very successfully in the early months of the war, as an inceptor and as a bomber. I imagine that was what motivated the Russians. A single prototype of the Lebed VIII was built, with different landing gear, but it never went into production. - As I said, mine is fictitious. -
Where are all the terrain tiles?
Stephen1918 replied to Grinseed's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
All of the terrain tiles should be in the terrain folder, or in one of the CAT files. (If there are seasonal tiles, each season will be its own folder inside the terrain folder.) If there is water on the tile, it will be in TGA format and you won't see a preview when you look in the folder on your desktop. The rest of the tiles will be in BMP format. Each terrain has a _data.ini and that assigns a Texture number to every tile. In Mue's TFD tool, missing tiles will show up as pink squares, if you align the cursor over that square, you will see the number of the missing tile at the bottom of the window. Then you can look in the data.ini to find the name of the tile - that at least tells you what you're looking for. -
Today I uploaded a new plane - the Russian Lebed 7. The Lebed 7 was a Russian copy of the Sopwith Tabloid. It was intended to be used as a fighter, but was quickly outclassed and was used mostly for recon and later for training. I have made a fictitious version (or perhaps a field mod) with a Lewis gun mounted on the upper wing. My thanks to Ojcar, once again for making the FM. By my count, this is the 60th plane that Ojcar and I have made over the years.
