Windows 10/Effects Problems?
Menrva replied to Piecemeal's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
IIRC Spudknocker made a thread about a similar issue with Win10 regarding unexpected crashes with terrains, it had to do with the files, now everything seems case sensitive. I'm wondering though, has anyone tried running SF2 with compatibility modes? And with administrator rights? I am on Win10, but I can't check atm. -
arbitrary 3D mesh tod objects
Menrva replied to mue's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Ditto, actually he is already an hero for all CombatACE modders, considering his valuable earlier tools. Mue, we can't thank you enough, things like this will surely keep SF alive and beautiful! Keep up the good work! -

[W I P] Angola Terrain for the South African border war
Menrva replied to Centurion-1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I made quite a number of transition tiles for my WIP revamp of the Iraq/Iran terrain, I might be able to help you guys, but I still have to learn how to effectively create decent looking TODs for tiles. Regarding lakes and rivers, don't even try to be perfect and to recreate all the water bodies (as I stupidly did), since it is very time consuming and you can only add certain rivers and/or lakes with a certain degree of precision. Some artistic liberties must be taken. But indeed more details go into the terrain project, the more it will be appreciated, I guess. As FRPignon said, the only constraints are time and patience. If not many tiles are needed to be made, and if you guys are not in a hurry, just drop me a PM and I'll see what I can do in the usual two weeks. -
Yep, amazing story, there was a nice article about him at the BBC News much time ago, that's when I first heard of him. Thanks for posting!

Chinese territorial claims
Menrva replied to Ice Man's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
It seems this theater is going to be really hot in the future, and I'm not talking about the Navy wives said above; China is expanding another artificial island: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-36069615 -
Scale and Fuel Consumption
Menrva replied to Nicholas Bell's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Unless we mod every terrain we have (both stock and addon) to the RL 100% (and it can be done with HeX editing, but noticeable bugs come with it, and one must edit each target and double its coordinates values), it would be a huge effort to mod each .ini of each aircraft (the contrary would be a huge effort as well, to mod each terrain). I must admit it bothers me that we have 100% addon terrain (which look better due to their scale) and 60% scaled stock terrains. My biggest dream atm would be to be able to mod terrains to their 100% scale without creating bugs (TOD files are not scaled properly according to the new enlarged TFD, etc.). Then we might think about correcting fuel usage for planes, taking into account that we can't refuel in SF2. This could be part of a SF2 community patch, since TK left it in our hands, I'd say. Sorry for the thread hijacking. -
Strike Eagle FM and Loadout Enhancement Kit
Menrva replied to Spudknocker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
I can't believe it! So you managed to make it so that AI planes can now drop the "dumb" bombs, without the need of creating specific _AI versions of the weapons. A-MA-ZING! First your thread about the terrains loading, now this bug fix. Pity there are quite many planes who need a similar fix, but with time we'll make it. You have my biggest respect! You might want to create a thread about this AI bug fix, so that people can try to fix their own additional planes. -
Alternate Falklands Terrains
Menrva replied to Sundowner's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
I guess so, he advises to install the Falklands/Malvinas 1982 mod first. What a surprise, Sundowner! Excellent terrain! -
Knowing Trump's past, if he becomes president , he will completely sell the US to China or to whoever makes the biggest offer. I don't trust that moron (and I don't even know why in the bloody hell the Americans prefer him over other candidates, maybe because he is a good comedian like George Bush Jr. was), and I don't trust Clinton either. Seriously, it seems that this time there are mostly no good candidates for the presidency. The only reason we are not stopping to give arms and money to Turkey and Saudi Arabia is because the West wants to oppose itself against Russia and its allies (the US has important airbases in Turkey facing the Black Sea region). I guess the Cold War never ended for the West. Damn, it is so funny and tragic to see that the EU agreed to give 3 or more billions of euros to Turkey so that the Erdogan government takes most of the migrants. Funny (or tragic) side of the news is that Erdogan is financing ISIS so that they keep their proxy war against the Kurds; this only brings more migrants escaping from that hell hole called Syria. If it was up to me, we would be allied with Russia against international terrorism. I don't like Putin, but better him than that founder of terrorism called Erdogan. But we must also keep in mind that it is not easy at all to change alliances so quickly. We can't just say to Turkey and Saudi Arabia to go f themselves, parts of EU's economy are depending on them. Anyway, I have a bad feeling about everything. The world has never been so f!cked up and crazy so far. I swear it feels like living the pages of history, those that tell of economic crises and dictators taking the lead, before everything explodes in 1939. Imagine the Syrian Civil War as the Spanish Civil War which started in 1936. You get the picture.

DDS Conversion troubles ( YEP more tales of woe and misery )
Menrva replied to Trotski's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
If I may add, just keep in mind that a .dds is a sort of compressed (and thus with lower quality) .tga, much like a .jpg in relation to a .bmp (DDS : TGA = JPG : BMP), so I am not sure if the game engine automatically reads .jpg files when the LOD references .dds textures (but I think it should read .tga files in place of .dds ones). IMHO, unless you have the original textures (in .tga or .bmp), it is pointless to convert .dds files to another format, since the .dds has already lowered the quality of the texture. -
I didn't know, thanks for the info tonipm99! I agree, what a pity that there is not much info regarding this plane.

Especially the first one, since it resembles a F-15S/MTD which was included in some Ace Combat games. It had that kind of nozzles, not the usual ones. I guess it's photoshopped, nice one though.

FPS and color in Unlimited vs High Effects
Menrva replied to Spudknocker's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
IIIRC when you choose Unlimited Effects, your graphic card uses DirectX 10 level shaders (in fact you get bloom and other special effects). When on High Effects or less, your graphic card simply uses DirectX 9 shaders, so there is no way to preserve that look you have on Unlimited. This also explains why you have lower FPS when on Unlimited. Most likely your graphic card is not good enough to use DirectX 10 while mantaining a good FPS (the rest of your PC is very good instead, an I7 and 16GB of RAM, it's more than okay). You might want to consider updating the video drivers of your card and see if there is an improvement. If not, consider buying a new and more powerful video card. I have a really bad computer instead, and I usually use Medium Effects or even lower settings sometimes. You can set all Texture related options to Unlimited though, they don't take much FPS and improve the game looks quite a lot. -

SF2 FJ-3 Fury USN/USMC Skin Pack 3

Lovely decals work as always, Wrench! Just one thing, this should be called Skin Pack 2, not 3, for obvious reasons. -
WIP Mega THREAD!
Menrva replied to ErikGen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Apart from the new and uber-realistic tiles from Stary (I can't believe this is SF2!), did I notice new water effects and a new version of SARCASM? -
Chinese territorial claims
Menrva replied to Ice Man's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
So the changes I suggested didn't work? But the odd thing is that everything else works ok, I guess we must find an alternative LOD for those signs. But I have some sort of an idea as to why this bug is happening; those signs are acting as if they were ships, in fact they sink into the ground. You might want to double-check the object type, their relevant .ini statements in the _types.ini, etc. -
Chinese territorial claims
Menrva replied to Ice Man's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
-Try setting the LowDetailMesh back to its stock value (LowDetailMesh=-1.5). It won't affect the ships I am pretty sure, so just take a look at the signs. -If nothing changes, in the [NormalTextureMaterial] restore the RenderedInOrder value (you should have it set to TRUE, now try setting it back at FALSE). I have no idea what this means, but who knows, it may work. -Moreover, make sure you removed the [NoiseTextureMaterial], it seems it is no longer working/present in the stock SF2 terrains _data.ini files. Hopefully we'll find a fix for this odd bug. I'll be busy in the next 48 hours, but I'll be back. Keep us posted! -
Chinese territorial claims
Menrva replied to Ice Man's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
Such adjustments have fixed one bug, but may have introduced a new one. The only way to figure out what is going on is to replace parts of the _data.ini statements one by one, or group of strings by group of strings. Eventually we may find the "buggy" value. Do you have the old _data.ini values? If you do, please post them here, I do have some suspicions. -
Chinese territorial claims
Menrva replied to Ice Man's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mission & Campaign Building Discussion
In fact, that is strange and makes me wonder. On some terrains using custom _hm files I experienced enemy tanks totally sinking into the ground during various missions. But this is another case, all objects seem to work fine except those signs. Could it be LOD related? krfge, did the signs work fine before the .ini changes I suggested? If they did, then we'll have to dig inside the _data.ini to find out the culprit/s. At least we're going to learn more about the _data.ini values.
