  2. [Fictional] BAC Lightning F.6N 'NATO'

BAC Lightning F.6N for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2:Europe
This mod is meant for those without the Strike Fighters 2 Expansion Pack 2 (for Strike Fighters 2 Europe) and is a simple mod of Russouk2004's superb BAC Lightning F.Mk6 from the SF1 archives to give a fictional F.6N (N for NATO) in service with four NATO air forces (Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and the UK) in a 1966 to 1988 timeline.
Unfortunately, the 3D model has some issues with decal bleed on the vertical tail and also with shadow 'ropes' but I've elected to leave shadows ON. I've had a play with the FM by pasting in some Third Wire Lightning DNA including adding 'ghost' outer wings to allow for this 3D model having a one-piece wing whereas the Third Wire Lightning has a two-piece wing and I've also fiddled with the mass fractions to distribute the weight. It flies really nice and will perform a 'hands free' take-off (flaps down, throttle up, brakes off) with the usual ability to supercruise and climb supersonicly.  As this mod is meant for those without the Strike Fighters 2 Expansion Pack 2 I've used the pit from the stock F-4B Phantom.

    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the LightningF6N folder into your Aircraft folder.
    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the LightningF6N folder into your Decals folder.
    3. From the SOUNDS folder drag and drop both files into your Sounds folder.
    Bingo Fuel!

    CREDITS
As always, thanks to Third Wire for a great little game/sim.
Massive thanks to Russouk2004 for creating the Lightning F.Mk6 a real British thoroughbred.
Thanks also to Sundowner for the silver/NMF Lightning skin used for all eight skins with tail markings pasted on top by yours truly.
And, finally, thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community.

  3. [Fictional] BAC Thunderstrike S.1 (TSR.2)

BAC Thunderstrike S.1 for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2
    This is a simple mod of bongodriver's outstanding BAC TSR.2 to give a fictional Thunderstrike S.1 strike aircraft in service with the RAF during the 1968 to 1980 timeline. Three RAF squadrons are covered and all with toned-down (pale) markings;
    No.100 Squadron.
    No.139 (Jamaica) Squadron.
No.617 Squadron - The famous 'Dambusters'.

    BACKSTORY
In the House of Commons on April 6th 1965, when Chancellor James Callaghan stood to deliver his budget day speech most of the British aviation industry were prepared for the worst but nothing about the TSR.2 was mentioned and a collective sigh of relief was heard. On April 9th, Prime Minister Wilson made an unannounced visit to BAC Warton and, after raised voices were heard coming from the boardroom, Wilson was given a tour of the TSR.2 front office by an enthusiastic and passionate Roland Beaumont. Playing to the assembled crowd of BAC workers and the Press corps, Wilson announced that whilst some economies were needed this important aircraft was "an amazing example of British engineering and will form the backbone of a modern Royal Air Force" adding that a production order for 30 examples would be immediately placed plus another four pre-production aircraft. Astounded BAC officials looked at each in disbelief, swallowed hard and smiled for the cameras.
In the months that followed, everything seemed to fall into place. The undercarriage retraction problems disappeared, the new Olympus 321 engines ran faultlessly both at Filton (and soon after in the newly flown XR222) whilst various highly classified black boxes arrived at Warton, were fitted and worked like a charm. Testing continued into 1966 and on April 6th, 1966 Mary Wilson (the wife of Prime Minister, Harold Wilson) smashed a bottle of champagne across the nose of XR225 in a naming ceremony christening the aircraft 'Thunderstrike'. In August 1966, the Air Ministry announced that to ease the aircraft into squadron service a Thunderstrike Test and Evaluation Squadron (TTES) would be formed during 1967 at RAF Coningsby operating the last four prototypes (XR223 to XR226) and the four pre-production aircraft (XR556 to XR559).
During the Spring of 1967 the excellent results coming from the Thunderstrike Test and Evaluation Squadron allowed the RAF to begin to plan the introduction into service of the BAC Thunderstrike S.1 and it was hoped
to initially re-equip No.617 'Dambuster' squadron at RAF Scampton first and hopefully by April 1st, 1968 (the RAF's 50th birthbday). However, during August 1967 the RAF top brass became aware of the onset of fatigue
problems with the two Victor B.2 squadrons at RAF Wittering and, fearful of another Valiant style mass grounding, it was decided to move the Victor B.2's away from the arduous low-level role as a matter of urgency and re-equip them with the Thunderstrike.
Deliveries to No.100 and No.139 squadrons commenced in February 1968 but by April 1st only seven aircraft had been received and these early production machines had varying standards of both engines and nav/attack
systems but the photo-shoot held on April 1st at least gave the impression that the aircraft had entered service but it was not until February 1969 that both squadrons were declared operational and available to NATO Sacuer.
By this time, No.617 squadron at Scampton had also began to re-equip with the Thunderstrike S.1 and had moved to Wittering at the end of March 1969. During April 1969 all three squadrons took part in Exercise Clansman, a
NATO exercise based on mock-attacks on several Scottish hydro-electric facilities, with all three squadrons returning exceptionally high scores for serviceability, penetration and bombing accuracy.
Following this solid entry into service the Thunderstrike programme never looked back with orders placed for 60 Thunderstrike S.2's for RAF Germany plus 90 S.3's for RAF Strike Command as Vulcan replacements and a hugely
successful export campaign saw the aircraft sold to Australia, Canada, India, Italy, Saudi Arabia and West Germany.
    Nurse, my medicene please.

    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the ThunderstrikeS1 folder into your Aircraft folder.
    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the ThunderstrikeS1 folder into your main Decals folder.
    3. From the EFFECTS folder move the three 'Olympus' files into your Effects folder.
    4. From the PILOTS folder move the TSRSeat folder into your Pilots folder.
    5. From the SOUNDS folder move the two 'Oly' files into your Sounds folder.
    6.  From the WEAPONS folder move the AS-30 folder into your Weapons folder.

    COCKPIT
Please note that this mod uses a slightly modified stock Phantom pit with the pilot position altered and the air-to-air modes disabled. Cockpits and Avionics are not my thing so I'm open minded to any suggestions
for improvements but please note that I do like to make my mods as simple as possible so rivet counters need not apply.

    CREDITS
As always, thanks to Third Wire for a great little game/sim.
Massive thanks to bongodriver for bringing the TSR.2 to the Third Wire Community. Genius! It's impossible to improve on his outstanding TSR.2 add-on so this version is just a different flavour.
Equally massive thanks to sundowner for the awesome skins on this version and, indeed, on all the TSR.2's plus his developed versions... check them out!
And, finally, thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community.

  5. [Fictional] BF-5A 'Freedom Fighter'

BF-5A Freedom Fighter for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2

This is a very simple mod of 'The Mirage Factory' F-5A/F-5C to create a fictional export version in service with the Belgian Air Force during the 1970-1991 timeline with markings for No.1, No.2, No.8 and No.42 smaldeel (the latter unit tasked with reconnaissance).

    BACKSTORY

During the first half of the 1960's, Belgium and the Netherlands both started looking for a replacement for their F-84F Thunderstreak fighter-bombers and the Lockheed T-33 advanced trainer for delivery around 1970. After both countries had written their individual requirements 12 potential aircraft were studied resulting in a shortlist consisting of the A-7 Corsair, the A-4 Skyhawk, the CL-984 (a version of the F-104), the Mirage 5 and the F-5A. In the mood of the times, Europe was awash with joint requirements and collaborative programmes so it was quite appropriate for the two nations to work together for maximum standarisation so the BAF and KLu issued 'Specification TFT70' a joint requirement for a tactical fighter and advanced trainer.

After exhaustive testing and evaluation both airforces reported to their respective Ministers of Defence, that with some adjustments, the F-5A fighter-bomber and the F-5B advanced trainer were their preferred choice. However, the Belgians had a problem in that Wallonia (the French-speaking part of the country) preferred a French plane (i.e. the Mirage) but after protracted political discussions including the promise of a good share in the license production of the airframe by SABCA and the engines by FN (both based in Wallonia) the F-5 was chosen. In the Netherlands Fokker was chosen to participate in the manufacturing program.

However, during this time Northrop had increased the price of the baseline F-5A by no less than 11% leading both countries to make a deal with Canadair who had recently acquired a production license for their CF-5 derivative. With its more powerful Orenda J85-15 engines and a more sophisticated navigation system this was a step in the direction the BAF and the KLu needed. With further modifications including more advanced avionics, moving-map navigation, radar altimeter, SAAB BT9 bombing computer, bigger underwing droptanks, a two-position nose wheel strut, extra auxiliary louvre-type air inlets for take off and manoeuvering flaps it resulted in the most advanced F-5A ever produced. Compared to the F-5A the more advanced BF/NF-5A promised to be a superb multi-role tactical fighter with a useful air-to-air capability due to it's 50% increase in turn rate over the 'vanilla' F-5A.

In early 1968 both Belgium and the Netherlands each ordered 80 single-seat BF/NF-5A's and 20 two-seat BF/NF-5B's advanced trainers for delivery during 1970 and by the beginning of 1972 both countries had 4 front-line squadrons and an OCU operational in service. The aircraft were generally popular with pilots and ground-crew alike and served both airforces well before slowly being retired during the latter part of the 1980's and by the early 1990's most BF/NF-5's had been retired with most being sold on to Greece, Turkey and Venezuela.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the BF-5A folder into your Aircraft folder.

    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the BF-5A folder into your main Decals folder.

    3. From the PILOTS folder drag and drop the PILOT_BAF folder into you main Pilots folder.

  7. [Fictional] Boeing/Mitsubishi F/A-18M & F/A-18M2 Super Hornet for the JMSDF

This is a mod of the Super Hornets E & F from EricJ to make them look like fighter planes from the japanese maritime self defense force.

    BACKGROUND:
The JMSDFs new carrier, the Shinano, which does service in the surroundings of the japanese homeland, was equipped with F-14EJs. In 1999, the 81st Hikotai stationed on the carrier was reinforced with two additional hikotais, the 23rd and the 31st. The JMSDF obtained the Hornet at the same time as the JASDF. Under the designation F/A-18M and F/A-18M2, the F/A-18M2 replaced the F-14EJs of the 23rd and 31st Hikotai while the F/A-18M got designated to two new hikotais, the 3rd and 14th. At the same time, the JMSDF started introducing a new system of serial numbers adjusted to the new ship type.

Instead of the standard four-digit serial number system, the planes and helos of the carrier received a new system consisting of the jap. abbreviation for aircraft carrier (kubo), the hikotai number and finally the plane number.

Also, as a part of the new system, the fuselage wears the designation and the name of the vessel the plane is stationed on; just like in the US Navy.

The Shinano was declared DCV (defender carrier vessel) because the aircraft carrier was an offensive weapon according to the japanese constitution. Using the word "defender" allowed the possession of an aircraft carrier.

  9. [Fictional] British Aerospace Sea Kestrel FRS.1

BAe Sea Kestrel FRS.1 for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2

This is a fictional operational version of the British Aerospace P.1214 project in service with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm.

The 3D model is by Cocas and I've been honoured to have been allowed to play with it and package it up for release as best as I can with limited time but I hope you enjoy it as much as I have because it's huge fun! Three Royal Navy skins are included in two different shades of grey and I've also included a USMC 'Shamrocks' skin as a bonus.

    BACKSTORY

The cancellation of the proposed CVA-01 aircraft carrier in 1966 left the Royal Navy with no replacements in sight for both HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal and thus began a slow and painful run down in the Fleet Air Arm's fixed-wing capability. But in April 1973 the Admiralty were given a glimmer of hope by being allowed to procure three 'anti-submarine warfare' carriers of the Invincible class. Whilst primarily designed to accommodate large numbers of medium sized ASW helicopters the Admiralty sensibly allowed for the deployment of the V/STOL Harrier and quickly followed up the order for the carriers with an initial order for 24 Sea Harriers (later increased to 34).

Entering service in 1978 (but not declared operational until 1981) the small Sea Harrier force performed remarkably well in the 1982 Falklands Conflict and with confidence high the Admiralty immediately planned for the attrition replacement of the six Harriers lost, the speedy introduction of an improved version and also the design and development of a supersonic V/STOL successor. The first two elements of this plan were immediately approved but, in January 1983, the Admiralty were informed that the Sea Harrier replacement would have to be part of the RAF's Air Staff Target 403 (AST 403) essentially for a planned successor for the Jaguar and Harrier in RAF service.

During this time the British Aerospace (BAe) design team at Kingston (formerly the Hawker design team) had been sketching advanced V/STOL designs to meet AST 403 and could see that the involvement of the Royal Navy would lead to a larger UK programme and also open up a larger export market for an aircraft designed both for land-based and carrier-based use. By March 1983 the Kingston design team had dusted off their P.1214 project and offered several versions to the UK Ministry of Defence. The build-up to the 1983 British General Election saw the Conservative Party, led by Margaret Thatcher, make capital of the UK's victory in the previous year's Falklands War and on the promise of 'strong defence' announced the decision to procure a successor to the Sea Harrier on June 2nd, 1983 with an order for 50 P.1214's for the Fleet Air Arm and a further 200 P.1214's for the RAF with initial deliveries going to the Royal Navy. Development moved smoothly and, as a nod towards the P.1214's lineage, the BAe design team renamed the aircraft Kestrel II.

Entering service in May 1988 with the newly reformed 899 Naval Air Squadron the Sea Kestrel FRS.1 served with four frontline Fleet Air Arm squadrons seeing service in both Gulf Wars and also the Second Falklands War of 2002.

  10. [Fictional] C-24 / C-24B Super Hornet

    [Fictional] C-24 / C-24B Super Hornet

This is a mod of the Super Hornets E and F from EricJ to make them look like planes from the spanish air force.

    BACKGROUND:
In 2010, command of the EDA asked for the possibility of replacing their EF-18As and Bs with the more advanced E and F versions. Diplomacy made it possible that the Obama administration would take the old planes back and make a special offer. In 2012, the first squadrons received the new planes. Since the former Hornets wore the designation "C-15", the Super Hornets ought to have been designated C-15VA and CB-15VA, but these designations were too long so the Super Hornets were then called "C-24".

  11. [Fictional] Canadair CF-103 Callisto

Canadair CF-103 Callisto for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2
This is a simple mod of the stock MiG-19S to give a very fictional 'what if' Canadair CF-103 Callisto with markings for No.423 Squadron and No.433 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. I did this as a request back in 2009 and this update is just to add a screenshot to the listing but I've changed the name to fit in with the Canadian system of aircraft designation (the real CF-103 never left the drawing board) and I've also tweaked a few things including the Third Wire MiG-19's ferocious rate of roll at low-level.

    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the CF-103 folder into your Aircraft folder.
    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the CF-103 folder into your Decals folder.
    That's it!

  15. [Fictional] Corsair GR.1 - RAF South East Asia Command

    BAC/Vought Corsair GR.1 for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2:VIETNAM

This is a very simple mod of the stock Third Wire A-7B to give a fictional BAC/Vought Corsair GR.1 with markings for No.8 and No.20 squadrons of RAF South East Asia Command.

    BACKSTORY

The UK General Election of October 1964 saw a new Labour government slip into power with a slender four-seat majority but this did not deter their planned shake-up of the UK Defence Budget. Whilst many observers felt that the TSR.2 programme would survive until at least the 1965 April budget it was not that great a shock when the axe fell earlier than expected in November 1964 with a bland announcement that a three-month study period of the RAF's tactical strike and recconnaisance requirements would be immediately started as part of a much broader Emergency Defence Review.

The Emergency Defence Review of February 1965 concluded that the RAF needed a more flexible force and recommended a mix of aircraft with a small force of sophisticated all-weather tactical strike aircraft, a much larger force of tactical attack machines plus an improved interceptor-fighter force equipped with longer-range aircraft than the totally inadequate Lightning.

Whilst initially ordered as a replacement for the Hunter the Spey-enginned Phantoms already on order (thanks to an order placed by the outgoing Conservative Government in February 1964) were now allocated to air defence duties to replace the Lightnings in the UK and RAF Germany squadrons. For the tactical strike role it was no surprise that the F-111 was ordered but, like the Phantoms, with Spey engines which soon hit many of same problems encountered by the Spey-Phantoms.

For the RAF's tactical attack role almost no one foresaw the purchase of Ling-Temco Vought's VAL contender (later designated A-7 Corsair II) as it had only just been selected, literally days earlier, by the US Navy as their A-4 Skyhawk replacement. The UK Government simply couldn't resist putting the non-afterburning Spey into their version of the Corsair but, thankfully, this was a much happier marriage and LTV had actually already planned their A-7 to use this engine as an insurance policy and to be able to offer an export version of their promising design. As some sort of feeble compensation to BAC for the loss of the TSR.2 the UK Government negotiated with LTV a manufacturing licence for BAC to licence-build all British production aircraft although this
was more of a final assembly deal plus partnering on all European and Commonwealth sales which actually became quite lucrative for BAC.

Development moved swiftly and apart from minor delays due to the substitution of the TF-30 for the Rolls-Royce Spey RB.168-2A turbofan engine the only other delay was caused by the substitution of the Colt Mk12 20mm cannon for British 30mm Aden (with reduced round capacity) and progress was certainly helped by having the prototypes built and test-flown in the USA and the British Corsairs simply slotted into the very smooth and highly successful LTV Corsair programme that saw the A-7A move from operational requirement to squadron service in three years. Entering service as the Corsair GR.1 in early 1968 the aircraft was extremely popular in RAF service and served until late 1991 after seeing service in Desert Storm.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the CorsairGR1 folder into your Aircraft folder.

    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the CorsairGR1 folder into your main Decals folder.

  16. [Fictional] Curtiss P-40N Warhawk 'IDF'

Curtiss P-40N 'IDF' for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2

This is simple mod of Raven's P-40N20CU to give a fictional P-40N 'Warhawk' as it might have appeared in service with the newly-created Israeli Defence Force Air Force in 1948.

    BACKSTORY

Following the Israeli Declaration of Independence on May 14th, 1948 David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of a Jewish state to be known as the State of Israel. Within two weeks the Israeli Air Force was formed mainly using foreign volunteer pilots (including many World War II veterans) flying a variety of obsolete and war surplus aircraft sourced by various means. Among these were 36 P-40N Warhawk fighter aircraft delivered in crates from the United States and alongside the Avia S-199's and Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IX's they formed the backbone of the early Israeli Air Force.

Whilst the Warhawks were not ready to help in attempting to halt the Egyptian advance from the South during early June 1948 they were soon in operation in the close support role and also bolstered the air defences around Tel Aviv and were successful in shooting down several Egyptian Air Force DC-3's and Spitfires. The Warhawks were also tasked with escorting the handful of Israeli B-17 bombers but were mainly committed to the support of IDF ground forces. By December 1948 IDF ground forces were ready to commence Operation Assaf to take control of the Western Negev and the Warhawks helped in stopping an Egyptian counterattack and helped prevent another counterattack when a Warhawk flying an aerial reconnaissance sortie revealed Egyptian preparations and the IDF was able to launch a pre-emptive strike.

Following the ceasefire the remaining Warhawks were gathered together to re-equip No.101 who operated the type until the end of 1956 playing a minor role in Operation Kadesh by escorting Israeli Air Force DC-3s dropping Israeli paratroopers behind Egyptian lines at the Mitla Pass and Et-Tur.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the P-40N_IDF folder into your Aircraft folder.

    2. From the DECALS folder drag and drop the P-40N_IDF folder into your main Decals folder.

    3. From the WEAPONS folder drag and drop the AN-M81 and TANK75_IDF folders into your main Weapons folder.

At this point it might be a good idea to change the pilot to whatever you've got in your install suitable for the early post-war period.

    BACKGROUND

After the enormous success of the F-114A among the pilots in the USAF, which described the plane as easy to fly,
the USMC wanted a similar plane but with a major variety of arming possibilities. Regarding that, the hull was modified
to allow the addition of two more weapon stations. The USMC was satisified with the result and ordered 72 planes.

The squadrons represented in this pack are the VMA-231 "Aces", the VMF-232 "Red Devils" and the VMFA-333 "Shamrocks".

  19. [Fictional] Dassault Mirage 2000BP

A Mod of the Mirage 2000B from Amokfloo and JAT81500 to make it look like a fictional fighter for the portuguese air force.

    BACKGROUND
According to EESP (European Economic Stability Protocol) signed in the middle of 2012 in Brussels by the 27 partners of the EU, the countries with a high rate of debt (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal etc.) had to execute all measures necessary in order to reduce their debts. In article 12 "About the defense of the homeland", the countries of the EU constituted that all redundant units had to be dissolved and the equipment to be sold.

Furthermore, the armies of the affected countries had to change their "non-european" equipment for european equipment. Portugal had therefore to sell their US fighterplanes and replace them by european ones. In exchange, the equipment will be cheaper than for standard customers from outside the EU.

The F-16s got sold to Norway. The mayor manufacturers of fighters in Europe were Dassault, Saab and the Eurofighter Corporation. The portuguese air force decided to replace the Vipers from the 301st with Gripens and the ones from the 201st with Mirage 2000B fulfilling in that way the need of a capable multirole fighter-bomber. Both planes started to be delivered at the end of 2012, being fully operational in the early 2013.

Portugal and Spain, in addition to several other countries, recognized the effectiveness of a digital camo and elaborated their own grey-scaled digital camo. While Spain will be using it on their next delivery of Typhoons, which will replace the F-18Cs of the Ala 12, Portugal will use it on their new planes right from the beginning.

  23. [Fictional] Dassault Mirage 5FM 'Morocco'

Dassault Mirage 5FM for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2
This is a very simple mod of the stock Dassault Mirage 5F to give a fictional export version for the Royal Moroccan Air Force (Force Aérienne Royale Marocaine) in a Desert camo scheme with markings for Escadre de Chasse "Tigre".

    BACKSTORY
The Mirage 5 was developed from a request made by the Israeli Air Force in 1964 for a simpler 'clear weather' version of the Mirage 3E tailored mainly for the ground-attack role with avionics reduced and repositioned, more fuel for attack missions and two additional ventral stores pylons located towards the rear fuselage. In September 1966 Israel became the launch customer for this important new line of the Mirage family when they placed an order for 50 Mirage 5J's. However, rising tensions between Israel and their neighbouring Arab states during the early summer of 1967 allied to General de Gaulle's increasingly pro-Arab stance led to a French arms embargo to Israel announced on June 3rd, 1967 just two days before the Six-Day war despite Israel having paid for the aircraft in full.
By this time, the prototype Mirage 5 had flown and production was in full swing with the now embargoed Mirage 5J's beginning to stockpile at Bordeaux-Mérignac. But following the Mirage's dazzling combat record in the hands of Israeli pilots during the Six-Day war the air forces of many nations knocked on Dassault's door and one such nation was Morocco (formerly a French protectorate) who wanted the Mirage 5J's to supplement their recently acquired but decidedly lukewarm Northrop F-5A's. General de Gaulle readily agreed to this sale and Dassault made some minor modifications to the 5J's to export them as Mirage 5FM's to the Royal Moroccan Air Force in late 1968 with initial deliveries going to Escadre de Chasse "Tigre" based at Meknes, Northern Morocco.

    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the Mirage5FM folder into your Aircraft folder.
