You could try providing more information, like the link to the file you were trying to download. We have thousands of files, nobody is going to guess which file you were trying to download.

All caps... nice, too...

When I worked in retail I learned something to tell customers when using a product:

@Erik, maybe new accounts have to do a questionaire, skipping multiple choice and writing out the answer of what is required to download mods? disable copy and paste if able to

might solve the problem of new members making this complaint if they have to actually write out what they need to do.  like some FB groups do to screen members

I second this, it , it's gonna be more prevalent with more people coming in, but overall, would stop the incessant reporting on downloads, of people not being able to download, thinking it's a bug, and not a feature too. I mean it's gonna be more prevalent with more people coming in, but overall DA has a good idea, and think it should be at least there to at least check the block. But having them actually acknowledge it (if they read it though, which is something) shows that it was seen, and we can be like "You did acknowledge the procedures, so why are you asking?" kinda response.

main reason i suggest writing it out to get in rather than a check box is that honestly 99.99% of the population checks the box without actually reading the EULA

making them write it out (in theory) makes them actually read the words and those words have meaning

having said that, i would await the next post saying "i cant download" even after they write the terms out............ (my way of saying i dealt with soldiers for 20 years without actually saying that )

Silly question, but why is it my responsibility to fix the inability of people being able to read? I've jumped through the hoops, I continue to support the site, now I have to spoon feed downloads on a golden platter with an Erik fix this or make this widget so they can figure it out. I'm not following the logic here and I'm asking sincerely. I'm of the opinion that if they have to put in just the smallest amount of effort to download files for free that's okay. Just me?

Well... Something's gotta give, and I can understand you're frustrated, but there is a lack of communication about what's expected for a new user when they want to download something first thing, then we jump on people for not knowing what's going on. You gotta attempt to fix stupid with some thought, because if they keep complaining about the site, then we look like the bad guys. We're just simply asking to cover our ass when we do jump on somebody, we can say "You did read the EULA, right?" And yeah there will be somebody who messes it up, but at least we made the effort to communicate it clearly to potential members.

That's of the assumption that I've made no effort to communicate how to activate free downloads. Do you really think this is true?

While daddyairplanes and Flanker562 have a point. I absolutely agree with Erik on this.

I do not know how the process of creating an account is right now...But I bet all is clear there. There is a topic in the site support sub-forum about new download rules. It is even pinned.

If you are making an effort creating account to download a file, come on. You have to read the rules. No? Yes?

Soon we will end up with a certain kind of posts... "Click on My computer...how can I click on your computer..." you know the joke.

And this was established eons ago. A certain group of people have an inability to read and understand simple texts.

its not.

my suggestion was just to weed out the hundred "why cant i download" posts we seem to get a month from  said people unable to read.

eyes can skim over a screen, and a person can say ok. often doesnt mean they actually took in what they read.   if they have to type those words for membership tho, then they might actually realize what those words are. (bonus, no typing from them, no access to complain:lol:)

i tagged Erik because its his site, and any major change winds up costing him funds or time (or both).  but there's been a big uptick in that particular type of post this year, and its been irking alot of old hands round here who usually are otherwise very chill (yeah im callin you out Meusli )

i doubted it would be taken up, but i still suggested it. cause the idea wouldve been stillborn if it stayed in my head

caught this after the other post

i dont know what the current process is to get a new account. i also dont know how many new accounts are being created a month.

but it does appear that some folks arent listening, and from outside observer position, it feels like alot are ignoring the rules (and creating posts like the one we're talking in). maybe we're wrong, maybe these are 1% of the new members and not 75%; you know that better than us.

but i know older members are getting tired of them all the same, probably especially Flanker562 who is the one i typically see explain why they cant download
