Happy Birthday!

So why didn't MiG put the Ye-8 into production? it looks like a russian forerunner to the J-10 or eurofighter designs but from the 60's. Damn command economies and central planning offices

It comes with:

Actually, the Ye-8 looks merely like the same thing the US did with the F-86D or the Chinese did with the A-5/Q-5. You take an existing plane with a nose-mounted intake and put it somewhere else so you can put a large dish radar in the nose.

That's just a MiG-21 behind the wing leading edge. The front put the intake underneath the cockpit so a big old dish could go up there.

That is what MiG did with the MiG-23 and 25, after all, after years of making jets with nose intakes.

Moving or static? The Kfir certainly did. Some other older Mirages were retrofitted with them as well.

The Rafale and EAP flew in the 1980s, although the production variants took till now.

The B-1 certainly did, although it didn't really use them for lift. The Tu-144 had them for T/O and landing. The XB-70 had them...

How many planes before 1990 had canards?

You mean, other than the Wright Flyers?

Well, since we're talking military aircraft, I can think of three from WWII, alone....

The Curtiss XP-55:

The Kyushu J7W2 Shinden:

And the Heinkel He 200 A-2:

Basically canards could prevent stalls. They would stall first giving the pilot gain controll before his main wings stall. I bet other members on here could give a more detailed answer though.
