serverandenforcer 33 Posted April 2, 2008 (edited) Someting about this makes it seem like it's more of a CGI than a real life incident. EDIT....................... Never mind, I went to youtube and saw that it is a CGI, but representing what had happened over in Missouri Edited April 2, 2008 by serverandenforcer

kct 5 Posted April 3, 2008 Ouch. No wonder the pilot wanted to sue Boeing over this, if this is what happened. Chances is that anyone sane enough would be scared if his aircraft broke this way. Seriously, THIS is scary.
SkyStrike 15 Posted April 3, 2008 Ouch. No wonder the pilot wanted to sue Boeing over this, if this is what happened. Chances is that anyone sane enough would be scared if his aircraft broke this way. Seriously, THIS is scary. Something's SERIOUSLY WRONG here...USAF jets dropping out of the sky quite frequently.... According to an earlier topic in this forum i thought that the U.S. government was going to provide $50 billion or so to re-service/upgrade its F-15 fleet....as replacing all of them with F-22's isn't financially viable.... what about that? I don't wanna get political, but Boeing's got nothing to do with this.....the government ought to realise that it's putting the life of a lot of good men on the line.... They ought to ensure that all military personnel have the best & most reliable equipment for combat service, for the sake of safety & efficiency.... Furthermore... Without Govt. clearance there's nothing Boeing can do..... Besides, altough the F-15's the only combat proven jet that's never been shot down in action, it's over 3 decades old....they ought to do something to increase the airframe's lifespan, IMHO. Im Not trying to judge anyone's actions here...All I'm saying is that the above highlighted point should've been taken into concern.... My apologies in advance if i'm offending anyone by this post.... Edited April 3, 2008 by Tomcat_ace
kct 5 Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) If there is something wrong you should be merging your posts into one ;) . Well, I am not putting the blame on Boeing over this, the problem is, the first thing that will usually come into your mind in the case of a defect is putting the blame on the manufacturer of the product. Which, in this case, the blame usually goes to Boeing first (although it is technically the fault of the person in charge of maintenance of the birds, or those finding out about the cracks for NOT informing Boeing in the first place). Another factor that went into this is the age of the birds (this was discussed in the other thread, related to this). How many of them went way over their expected flying hours? Not to mention the age factor (some of these birds is way older than some of us here). Edited April 3, 2008 by kct

+drdoyo 2 Posted April 3, 2008 (although it is technically the fault of the person in charge of maintenance of the birds, or those finding out about the cracks for NOT informing Boeing in the first place). As a former Structural Mechanic myself I have to ask if you really are aware of just what this statement means. Not every inch of any aircraft is accessable in regular maintenance, and sometimes even in the heaviest maintenence cycles. There are areas that are untouchable without complete dismantling of the aircraft. That is a very costly and time consumeing project. Furthermore the engineers who designed the airplanes determine it's inspection needs over time. This inspection cycle is also modified as nessessary by engineers who are continuously employed during an aircraft's service span and are responsible in solving it's problems related to service life that could not be forseen. In short, you can't point a finger at any one level. Maintaining airplanes is a team effort from the Congress panel who authorizes the funds for procurement......and maintenence, to the most junior wrench turner. There will always be issues that arise the longer an airframe is flown that could not be forseen. Look at the A-6 spar cracks for instance which caused a number of Intruders to be re-winged. kct 5 Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) I am not pointing any finger at any particular party over this, pardon me if I have offended anyone. Of course, most of the problems these days are matters which would start debates in the Congress >.> . I personally would want to know what could happen after this, since the pilot apparently filed a lawsuit against Boeing (this was discussed in the other thread). My apologies in advance if i'm offending anyone by this post.... I don't know Tomcat_ace, I thought you put the most salient point right out there. 3 decades and no kills pretty much tells the tale. Hornet can't say that. Lord knows what the Democrats are going to ask us (the taxpayer) to pay for, it might as well be to refurbish the Eagle fleet or replace it completely with the F-22 regardless of what it costs. Don't know of a single social program that keeps the commies at bay like a flight of Eagles or a carrier air group. Food for thought!
JediMaster 451 Posted April 3, 2008 Well, you mean "F-15 A-D in AA combat" of course, since F-15Es have been lost to AAA/SAMs. One major contributor is its tasking solely in the AA realm, as historically ground attack has been proven far more dangerous. The F-14 was never shot down under the USN, only Iran, so it's hard to know what would've happened if not for that little revolution over there.

I just felt I should clarify the enormity of the task. It's really a catch 22 we are in right now IMHO. The car is ready to fall apart from use (over generalization in the F-15's case), it may cost nearly as much to repair it as a new car, and we don't have the money to buy a new car. eraser_tr 29 Posted April 4, 2008 Um....what commies? there aren't any left. It doesn't matter who is in congress, new planes have to be paid for. The problem is how expensive our equipment has become, comparable enemy fighters like migs and flankers are about a third of the cost. The paper trail every nut and bolt needs has alot to do with it, hence the $500 hammers.

I'm Sorry to contradict you JM, but a USN F-14 was shot down by an SA-2 during the 1991 Gulf War... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-14#United_States_Navy But as you said, they've never been lost in aerial engagements... Good Lord!!! That would mean US$137.5 million per jet!!!!!!!!!!!! compared to US$29.9 million per unit F-15...... IMHO, they ought to upgrade all F-15C/Ds to the proposed 'F' standard.... JediMaster 451 Posted April 7, 2008 I was referring to AA losses for the F-14, yes. I knew some had been lost to ADA over the years, but I didn't know how many. $30m per F-15? Do you mean refurb costs? Because there's no way to buy one for that price now! That was the price to make them YEARS ago.
