WW2: Invasion of Japan?

Recommended Posts

No problemo!! It looks like I might be up to my ears in North Koreans anyway... :haha: Wonder how much of the Ascender FM can be used....it's definatley NOT a dogfighter (looks like a fish, moves like a fish, turns like a cow - no insult meant to my DAT mates - I'm sure that's how the aircraft would probably have been in Real Life ™ )

Gocad: you can try shooting Geo an email or PM (both here and SimHQ), and see if he's got to share. Or....

take my more labor intensive route, and make one. Like I did for his Hellcat.

Well, I hope I'd be able to contact him, since I do not want to know how bad a template made by me would look compared to his.

IMHO the biggest problem are not the planes or missing skins (template or not, it doesn't take an eternity to do them), but rather the terrain, since this scenario needs a new one. A few ships couldn't hurt either (I'm thinking of Fletcher destroyers and Cleveland cruisers here)

Most assuredley so...we are missing a great number of ships for both sides. However, there is a 'fakedout' IJN destroyer at my site (for the last 3 or 4 years or so...) It's basicaly one of the standard DDs with a new flag. I'd like to see a real Fubukai classs, CAs and CLs for both sides. Hinch's MAC can stand in for CVEs (didn't someone do a mod for them recently?)

Someone some years back had started an IOWA class BB; I'm sure some of Hinch's ships could be Re-Purposed ™ for USN usage, maybe as WASHINGTON class :dntknw: ???

For parked (ok, docked) I-class subs we could use the U-boat from the ETO map. We must just 'think outside the box'; ground objects can be found fairly easily.

Well, the IJN didn't have much ships left in late 1945 or 1946, especially not capital ships, but the USN used its cruisers and battleships mostly as swimming AAA batteries to protect the really valuable ships...the aircraft carriers.

I remember 1946, having great memories on that game. There were some missions where as USN/USAF you sometimes messed with some surviving IJN big units. But it's true that they are not that much important. On the contrary, attacks on a US task force should be in such a mod. Is it possible to script kamikaze attacks?

Ohhh, I just remember those dogfights in early jets, with the Fujiyama in the background... and also my last mission of a 1941-1946 campaign in IJN, diving shouting "tenno banzai" toward an ennemy carrier!

Scripting an attack...well, definitely not in a campaign. But it shouldn't be too hard to turn a Zero into a strike aircraft that's going to divebomb a stationary carrier (you heard me).

Add plenty of AAA fire and doesn't matter whether that's a kamikaze attack or not.

Anyway, I would like to see this mod being made, but you all know the phrase: no terrain, no campaign. So is there anybody out there willing to that? As I said before, planes are not the problem, most of them exist already and thanks to Wrench also the templates for them.

EDIT: I've just realized that a terrain exists that could be used for this mod: Edward's WWII Okinawa terrain, which hides @avsim. Click me!

It would probably need a makeover, but it's not like there are no experts for such a task around.

Read this with interest, great idea. As a fan of older sims (DI Apache on ZX Spectrum, anyone  ) I love the idea of bringing old games up to speed on modern platforms. With Thirdwire. . . we can

Was holding off, as have too much stuff on the go, but, couldn't resist. . .

This fit the bill?

Bear in mind, 5th in line, after Kursk '43, Iceland, Dutch East Indies, and Modern UK/Baltic Sea. But I am more than happy to do what Gepard did with his Kashmir terrain, and crank out something workable with 3 airbases/target areas on each side, for someone to take further. I know nothing about this particular old sim, so, where should they be? And, where should the frontline be? Just round coastal Japan, with invading forces carrier based?

Wrench, I read your post about suggested terrain, and tried to fit the Aleutians in, I really did, but terrain distortion/way too big map problem reared its ugly head. But y'all tell me where to shift this little map round a bit before I start placing targets.

And, as I have said elsewhere, read Gepard's TE tutorial series in the KB, and you too can crank out any map you want, anywhere, anytime :biggrin:

OK, takes a bit of time to extract and convert the terrain tiles to proper format, but once you've done that, the sky's the limit. So cheers to Gepard for all of that :good:

Right, input, please?

Front line, IIRC, should look something like this:

japan3.jpg

Can't remember the name of that damn island north of Hokkido -- Kamchatka??

although, I belive the 'incursion' into Manchuria may have been deeper. Still, you can have bases in mainland China to strike the Home Islands with 29s (as is historical -google 'Raid on Yawata Steel Works'), 17 and 24 as well. Tactical bombers (A-20, A-26, B-25, -no Marauders since we ain't got one and pretty sure they were all sent to ETO anyway- P2Vs from the Aleutians {also historical}) and fighters both at Iwo and China to hit Korean and HI targets. You could even add B-35s, if you wanted to go that far!

Just some ideeers

BTW, I LIKE it!!

Nice info Wrench, thanks :good:

Frontline should be no problem to implement.

Placement of map OK? At the moment it is 3000km x 3000km, stretched to full size. Going much bigger causes distortion (there may be some already) but it is easy enough to move things E/W or N/S a bit if that would suit better.

Cheers,

That's right. Also, nice terrain, Baltika. That would be much better than the WWII Okinawa terrain.

AAAA Can't wait mates can't wait

BTW: If anyone needs a background story...

Wrench, that map line -- can a frontline be defined as a closed area in TK's closed campaign engine?

I think so, Gepard did it that way on the Suez and Isreal maps....very cooolio..it followed the pre-67 borders.

Some eye candy: 18 Vals vs. a USN Task Force (2 CV, 2CL & 6 DD).

The Vals did try to bomb the ships, but failed to score a hit. 15 Vals were shot down.

I still think that the ships need to put more lead into the air...

Also, I should get some effects packs.

Hard to tell, because most of the time the Vals were shot down before they could drop their bombs, but I had the impression that they did level bombing. The aircraft carriers do show up as targets, though, since they are not marked as WARSHIP, but as a MISC target.

But yeah, I definitely need to teach those Vals to dive-bomb those ships...

Well, I have been looking thru some of these old WW2 threads and this has caught my eye. Sorry to say my proposed Japan map has not advanced much since the basic terrain build pictured above, and will probably have to go back into the shop for the same reasons as Malaysia. That's not going to happen anytime soon.

But, I have been doing some reading on the subject, and the proposed Operation Downfall invasion of Japan was split into two parts, the initial invasion of Kyushu in Nov 45, to be followed by the invasion of Honshu in '46. The Japanese defence plan, Operation Ketsugo, committed the bulk of the available Imperial forces to an all-out defence of Kyushu, with little left in reserve. So...

It seems that Edward's Okinawa map would cover the initial phase no problem - as it was probably designed to. And it would be a shame not to take advantage of Wrench's Okinawa upgrade

The end result -

Operation Olympic IS GO :biggrin::good:

Folk , I'm very excited with the news here!! My regret is that two of my favourite planes are still missing here - the J7W Shiden and the P-61 Black Widow. It's a pity (almost a shame) that we didn't make them already!

Wasn't Geo working on the J7W about 2-3 years back????

As a stop-gap, you can always use my P-38M.

EDIT: I may have to change the Forts/mg pits/costal defense installastions to those newer ones I made that WORK!! and shoot back at you!

Let me know, Baltika!
