What happened next, I can't explain. All the last minutes, I had not downed the nose of my Albatros for more than 15° (had the Horizon on!); nor did I get a warning about airframe stress (or it was very short on - I didn't see any). But my plane broke up im mid air!

 

I'd say it's highly likely that one of your numbskull wingmen flew into you. That's exactly what ends the vast majority of my careers.

 

It's a shame that when this happens, the screen goes red or black almost immediately, and then the flight ends. This makes it very difficult to pause the game and go into external to see that happened, and there's nothing worse than waking up in Hell and not knowing how you got there . But on those few times I've suffered Mysterious Destruction Syndrome (MDS) and have been quick enough on the draw to be able to take a look, it's always one of my so-called friends who's run into me from behind and below. So I've taken to assuming that's what happened all the other times.

 

I find it a lot different from being hit by an archie burst or machinegun fire. The sounds are all different. You don't hear any shell explosion or MG hits, just the sudden sound of many aircraft parts breaking all at once.

Hasse Wind: Looks like I won't be a Pfalz pilot for long though; Jasta 10 has Albatros D.V's next on the menu

 

Wow, Hasse, Albatros D V is what I'm just flying with Jasta 15, in July 1917. Should be better a fighter than your defensive Pfalz.

But be careful - the new aircraft stress model is unforgiving, and for my opinion, too hard. So don't dive steep! And even after a

soft dive, pulling up can ruin your day.

Until that is not changed, I will keep aircraft stress switched off.

 

Wow, CJ, that's a great shot to show the new tracers. Is it tricky to install those?

 

Olham: It's really easy, you just replace the tracer.dds files with the new ones and the changed xml file, after backing them up first.

If you want to wait though, they will be included in yet another OFF patch, along with some other improvements.

Thanks for the warning Olham. I know the Alb has a problem with her lower wings, and I imagine it's going to take some time to get used to it after flying the strong and reliable Pfalz. I've already started practicing in QC.

 

Yesterday I followed an RE.8 I had shot down in a steep dive in order to see where she crashed and the Pfalz didn't even make any creaking noises in spite of my considerable speed. Must remember not to do that if live long enough to get the Alb D.V's!

Bullet and Hasse, my plane has broken up numerous times now, without anyone being near me,

except the opponent in front of me. I have switched "airframe stress" off now, cause I'm fed up with

such behaviour. I don't feel happy with that; it's like a cheat; but they just break up too easily now.

Good Morning All,

In my spare time as of late I've been busy working on my entry for the OFF Plane Skinning Contest, and while I still have MUCH to do on it terms of tweaks, color adjustments, blending and such, I was able to take my new Camel up for a toodle over the lines this AM. Here are a couple of screen shots just to peak you interest.

... I am again attempting to keep this looking as vintage as possible even though it is a complete fabrication on my part. But as with the Strutter project I have taken ideas and guidance from actual WWI aircraft in order to maintain the period feel of the overall design. I can't wait for this one to be completed. Even unfinished it is so very cool to fly it.

 

That's an awesome skin RAFL, and a damned frustrating one since I'd planned to try to skin a Welsh dragon onto an SE5 to represent Llewellyn Rhys' machine... you've piiped me to the post (second time, as I recall )

As today is the anniversary of the death of The Man himself, I took his Triplane up for a flight, and up until the story of the Aussie Ground Gunners (generally now believed to be his nemesis) this screenie could almost be what had happened if Brown had been close enough!

Just got back from the most amazing mission ever. Low over the front lines so many planes in the air it was incredible. I managed to separate a pair of the bosche fighters though. FIRST!!! Ever flamer in Sergent Mac L'Roys career. Almost got shot down by this poor fella's wingman while i watched.

Really good already, RedDog. But wouldn't they have made the wings in polygon camo

as well? I know, you were searching for sources of info about that; and I did a little too,

but haven't found anything. But to me a polygon test skin would only make sense, when

it was overall.

Fear the Fee!

Crewed by those stalwarts of No. 22 Squadron, Sergeants Bullethead and Stackrock, the mighty F.E. 2b sends another Hun to Hell. This was the 3rd kill scored by this pair during the current Arras "push", all of them Albatri of the latest type. If this is the best the Hun has in his arsenal, this war will be over shortly!

 

When congratulated by this correspondent upon their glorious return to within sight of their aerodrome of Clairmarais, Sgt. Bullethead mumbled something about morphine as he was carried by on a stretcher, which was taken by all witnesses as a stoic refusal of any painkillers. This correspondent then approached Sgt. Stackrock, who was wiping Sgt. Bullethead's blood off his face and hands with a shred of their upper wing fabric. When questioned for details on his latest triumph of arms, Sgt. Stackrock merely stared towards Hunland for a minute, heroically silhouetted against the morning sun, his lower eyelid ticcing with unexpressable emotion. Then he attempted to save the salvageable parts of his Fee by extinguishing the flames with the only liquid at his disposal, oblivious to the ammunition exploding around him. He should get a medal for that.

Now, that's what I call a funny report. Excellent addition to my breakfast, Bullet; great!

 

Test Pilot, I just checked for the climb of the SPAD, and it should be almost as good as the

Fokker DVII F Höhenjäger (in other words: excellent!) So, you have a great dive (you should be

able to dive almost vertically) and a great climb - use them, and you should have a great boom-

and-zoom fighter.

Nice report there Bullethead! OFF sure seems to get the creative writing juices flowing. Olham, thanks for the info. Didnt realize the Spad had such a good climb rate; Ill need to take advantage of that. I guess it just takes a strong will to stay out of the turning fights I'm so accustomed to in planes like the Camel. The neat thing about the Spad is that it's tough to do a quick turn to the right due to engine torque.

I only flew SPAD XIII in QC, but I found, you can do a great combination of diving attacks and

pulling out up after that. You need to be patient, cause you won't always place svere hits. But

you need to keep up that tactics. Go away, up, until you can do another dive attack.

With that tactic, only D VIIs are dangerous to you, as they can do pretty much the same.

 

PS: when climbing out of an attack, you got to check your six of course still, as some opponent

may have just gained speed/energy, and then he can follow you a bit.

Leutnant Stemmler, Leutnant Gottschling and I are sitting together with our youngsters,

Leutnant von Heisenberg and Feldwebel Knapp. We are drinking French beer from bottles.

It makes me homesick; this beer is not like any beer at home. And it's too warm, too.

The new pilots are deeply impressed by their 'old leader' - half an hour ago they witnessed,

how I shot down two SPAD XIII from Esc.83, within 4 minutes.

They are hanging at my lips, but I don't want to talk much. I looked right into the cockpit of

the second SPADfrom above, from less than 50 meters. From my angle, I could see his legs

in sand trousers, his arms, his hands in brown gloves, desperately pulling the stick - in vain.

I saw the impact of my burst, violently ripping holes into the sand trousers, the leather jacket

and the brown gloves, the pilot's cap - and I saw him looking up, right at me, a pale face,

perhaps 19 years old, and then the impacts in it...

If my pilots could see the chicken skin on my arms, if they could feel the cold shudder down

my back spine... But they don't notice it, and I don't show...

Stemmler makes a joke, that isn't funny really, and no one finds it funny, but we all laugh a

sandpaper kind of laughter, and then we wash the joke and the laughter down with lukewarm

French beer. Looking into the golden afternoon sun, I cannot feel any warmth from her.

She doesn't care, if she bathed even slaughter in her golden light.

"Excuse me now, gentlemen, I have some paperwork to do!" My voice sounds like through a

tin can; I'm standing up; hope, it didn't sound weak; I see their disappointed looks, but all I

want is to get to my room and close the door behind me. Only to lie on my bed, smoking,

and wondering, what I am doing here in the Marne valley; what I have become...
