UK_Widowmaker Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Brand spanking new Airbus 340-600, the largest passenger airplane ever built, sits just outside it's hangar in Toulouse, France, without a single hour of airtime on the clock.... Enter the Arab flight crew of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to conduct pre-delivery tests on the ground, such as engine run-ups prior to delivery to Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi. The ADAT crew taxied the A340-600 to the run-up area. Then they took all Four engines to takeoff power with a virtually empty aircraft. Not having Read the run-up manuals, they had no clue just how light an empty A340-600 really is. The take-off warning horn was blaring away in the cockpit because they had All 4 engines at full power. The aircraft computers thought they were trying to take off, but it had not been configured properly (flaps/slats, etc.) Then one of the ADAT crew decided to pull the circuit breaker on the Ground Proximity Sensor to silence the alarm. This fools the aircraft into thinking it is in the air. The computers automatically released all the brakes - and set the aircraft rocketing forward !! With the following result.......... The Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technology crew had no idea that this is a safety feature so that pilots can't land with the brakes on. Not one member of the seven-man Arab crew was smart enough to throttle back the engines from their max power setting, so the £200 million brand-new aircraft crashed into a blast barrier, totalling it. The extent of injuries to the crew is unknown due to the news blackout in the major media. This was because coverage of the story was deemed insulting to Muslim Arabs. Finally, the photos are starting to leak out. £200 million aircraft meets wall. Wall wins. Quote
OvS Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 8th-century man meets 21st-century technology. Well... seeing that I work for a major international airline... I can say with a great sense of professional knowledge as a LISENCED CAA aircraft engineer... You get what you pay for...stupid is as stupid does... OvS PS... I actually saw these about a year or so ago when it actaully happened. But I don't like posting stuff like this for respect of those who like to fly/travel. MAKO69 Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Looks like a simple mistake..............................NOT! Quote
Test Pilot Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Well hopefully everyone is alright. Maybe Boeing had infiltrated ADAT as a way to gain access to the Airbus. Quote
+RAF_Louvert Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Now there's an expensive little mistake. I don't think even MAACO can help with that one. Cheers! Lou Quote

Wonder what the fate of the crew was?...Wouldn't wish that on anyone (regardless of their own Stupidity) Edited May 13, 2009 by UK_Widowmaker Quote

Cameljockey Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Somebody bought $300,000,000 worth of spare parts! What's the price of scrap aluminum these days? That would make a lot of beer cans! CJ Quote

Hauksbee Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Well, it's bad enough for everyone involved - I hope they all got out with no more than minor injuries. Definitely! The authorities in Abu Dhabi want them healthy enough for the Major Injuries they're going to get when they return home. Quote
Cameljockey Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I read an article about it just a few minutes ago and it stated that there were no fatalities but 4 or 5 of the nine aboard were seriously injured. It's amazing that no one was killed. How much beer would a keg that big hold? CJ Quote

Bullethead Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 "if you make something idiot proof they'll just build a better idiot" As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man-- There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:-- That the Dog returns to his Vomit, and the Sow returns to her Mire, And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wobbling back to the Fire, And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins When all men are paid for existing, and no man must pay for his sins. As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn, The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return! -Kipling, "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" Quote
