Fubar512 1,350 Posted August 28, 2009 No, it's not silly. Back during the Soviet era, quite a few of their ships were built in Polish shipyards.
Emp_Palpatine 501 Posted August 28, 2009 Three comments: - Well, Russia's militaro-industrial complex is definitely failing and the past russian trend of association with french industry is growing. Remember the common trainer jet project. - Obviously, Russia wants to increase her projection capabilities, or at least tries to go back to decent ones. - Thanks for the money! Please buy more, and well be able to build that second Carrier one day!
Silverbolt 104 Posted August 29, 2009 What's the next step? ask for a nimitz and some Super Hornets?
dsawan 624 Posted August 29, 2009 i think it's a good move as the French class is cheaper than tarawa or Wasp classes. Russia's older helo carriers were not good in rough seas. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moskva_class_helicopter_carrier
firehawkordy 34 Posted August 29, 2009 that's Silly.... Not really, the Russians will, need to actually, gain the ability to provide Littoral Warfare support to future UN "peacekeeping" or disaster relief missions. I think Moscow is tired of the US or one of our allies showing up to help just days after the call goes out for any kind of help. Being able to have troops being "in the neighborhood" and providing aid can have a huge impact on the worlds perception of a country. Another thing, pirates. Imagine the impact of a Russian 'gater freighter of the Somali coast would have. The Russians play with their own rules, I doubt a very few pirates would survive a response to any kind of resistance. Let them have the Mistrals, I have no doubt that in a few years the Russian shipbuilders will have reversed-engineered them and start making bare-bones, but capable knock offs of their own. Nesher 628 Posted August 29, 2009 and they suppose to buy UAVs from Israel... it's not silly, it's politics probably more than anything else
Silverbolt 104 Posted August 29, 2009 well, in my point of view, its bad to the country image that is terrible for a weapon exporter like Russia....its Like US abandon their fleet of Super Hornets and buy Sea Flankers to replace.
Gr.Viper 131 Posted August 29, 2009 As soon as the Russian military got some money for modernization the went off the Russian tech Back during the Soviet era, quite a few of their ships were built in Polish shipyards. Mi-2 helicopters were also produced in Poland.
TX3RN0BILL 3 Posted August 31, 2009 Whilst the Moskva class can be considered a cold-war thing (being a very limited dedicated anti-sub helo-carrier), I think Russia should be able to build their own ships, as they have in the past, like the Ivan Rogov class...
Gr.Viper 131 Posted August 31, 2009 But it's sooo difficult to build something on our own... You'd have to fund research, upgrade or renovate refineries, factories and all production lines, find or train workers to use modern equipment. Why do it when the country can simply sell off its natural resources and shop in a ready-made supermarket? :english_en:
TX3RN0BILL 3 Posted August 31, 2009 Couldn't they just make an improved version of the Ivan Rogov? AFAIK Russia doesn't have anything against improving stuff, from Flanker fighters to Kilo class submarines... surely it couldn't be that hard to take the Ivan Rogov design and improve it? Somehow I think russian ships have the sexiest designs so seeing Russia go shopping for ships is somewhat of a downer...
JediMaster 451 Posted August 31, 2009 They very well might later on. However, in the near term this gets them something modern and western to examine and use under their terms, "to see how the other half lives" as it were. That knowledge can then be applied to upgrading or designing their own stuff later.

It's quite a lot of time to catch up, even more if you add the usual Soviet-inherited weakness in electronics. So buying stuffs and working on associations with western industries is far from being a silly deal. Edited September 2, 2009 by Emp_Palpatine
