I just discovered (pardon the pun!) the Discovery Wings series produced in the 1990's. As far as I can tell, It was never released on DVD - worse luck. Thank goodness for youTube which allowed me to watch a few episodes, like this wonderful version exploring the MiG-23 series.

If you haven't heard of this series before, check it out. Maybe one day it will make it to video...

Thanks for sharing! I loved the Discovery Wings Channel, it's too bad none of these classic programs are on DVD. I'm a big fan of the Military Channel as well, but these Discovery Wings shows will always be my favorite.

The problem I have with the newer Discovery Channel documentaries is that they're nearly always on American aircraft or in the rare shows they do on others, it's a very American perspective. Don't get me wrong, they do some good documentaries (the ones on the F-14, B-52 and AC-130 spring to mind), but they miss some or a lot of the history when presenting Russian/Soviet aircraft. There's a Russian series of doccos called Wings of Russia that is really good that you might want to check out. There's an 18 part series that runs through the history of Russian aviation from a Russian perspective (ie, see how they present Viktor Belenko for example) that will have a lot of info and footage that you generally don't see in Western programs.

There are also a bunch of episodes on specific aircraft that are quite good too, although I've found them kind of hard to find online.

I loved Wings of the Luftwaffe and Wings of the Red Star, especially with Peter Ustinov's narration. I remember the New Year's Day marathons they'd do with those.

Those channels are nothing but a shadow of their former selves. A&E was once called "The WWII channel" unofficially because of all the great stuff they'd have...now they just suck.

It is hard to find something interesting now on channels such as Discovery or National Geographic - most programs for aviation are weak. The last that was good was Dogfights on Planet channel...

Thanks guys for links!:good:

I find Discovery and NG degrating in general last years... too much show too little facts and ehm... science. And I hate those "reality" programmes

Just my two cents on this topic. I find it interesting that youtube has most Wings of Russia videos. Just type in the name and add a part and it will give you either the full video or in parts. I just copy and paste the name of the video from http://en.wingstv.ru/ and pick which video I like and go from their. The other day I was watching either a Discovery channel or Nat. Geo. video about Taipei 101 building and how they build it . The video was great but producing the video means having to cram all the information into one hour and missing vital/important parts. We as viewers want to see the important/crucial parts and not the bs of it.

On the Dogfights series on Planet channel. I can clearly remember one of my fav. ep. is when a usaf f-4e dog fight a vietnam mig-21. The day was hot from the outside and cool from the cockpit from the inside of the f-4e . The canopy was fogging up from the inside of the f-4e. The pilot could not see for a short time. Locking on the enemy was hard . The pilot was trying to get the sidewinder to growl . Suddenly it growled very loud. The pilot pull the trigger and success a vietnam mig-21 was brought down. This ep. was intense and it shows a good judgment call by the pilot to never give up.

I have been hunting these down online and found several episodes for download. It has been chewing into my download limits. If they sold them, I would buy them - until then, this will have to do. The quality isn't good enough for TV, but good enough for iPhone...
