+Sundowner Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Dunno if this has been posted before....... http://www.couriermail.com.au/questnews/ipswich/raaf-base-amberley-f-111-fighter-jets-end-up-on-swanbank-landfill-site-near-ipswich/story-fn8m0yo2-1226204896564 Quote
+hgbn Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Why can't they just be cut up by the scrapper. I can't see the sense of burying valuable metals in the dirt Quote
+suhsjake Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 That is a waste of titanium, aluminum, and steel. Quote
+Typhoid Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 brings new meaning to the term "aluminum farm". I agree - scrapping the metal makes more sense than just burying them. Quote
Slartibartfast Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Thats as bad as the Tornado pictures of them being carved up... sad way for them to go out. Quote
+hgbn Posted November 25, 2011 Posted November 25, 2011 Reminds me of the senseless scenes after the end of WWII. Where perfectly good lend/lease aircrafts were deep sixth from British carriers. Just because the US didn't want them back and UK didn't want to pay for them... In about 2000 years from now some archaeologists probably wonders about this puzzle Quote
Karyovin Posted November 26, 2011 Posted November 26, 2011 If they were the G's we may have had no choice but to bury them thanks to their previous role in SAC just like the B-52G getting dewinged. What is it with swing wing planes getting chopped up or buried when they are retired instead of using them like the F-4 for target practice? Quote
+DWCAce Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Hate to say it, but at least most of the F-14's got chopped up to be reused... Quote
Derk Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 In Sweden the Viggens were turned into beercans .......... (but at least AFAIK two of them were kept in flying condition) Quote
+JediMaster Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 What would the Swedes do with flying beercans??? Quote
Derk Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 What would the Swedes do with flying beercans??? Well, they already had the J29 Tunnan ("barrel") so I guess they know what to do Quote
ZeroFilth Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Oh i would totally pay for a Viggen beercan. Quote
