Why can't they just be cut up by the scrapper. I can't see the sense of burying valuable metals in the dirt :blink:

I agree - scrapping the metal makes more sense than just burying them.

Reminds me of the senseless scenes after the end of WWII. Where perfectly good lend/lease aircrafts were deep sixth from British carriers. Just because the US didn't want them back and UK didn't want to pay for them... In about 2000 years from now some archaeologists probably wonders about this puzzle :rofl:

If they were the G's we may have had no choice but to bury them thanks to their previous role in SAC just like the B-52G getting dewinged.

What is it with swing wing planes getting chopped up or buried when they are retired instead of using them like the F-4 for target practice?

In Sweden the Viggens were turned into beercans ..........:drinks: (but at least AFAIK two of them were kept in flying condition)

Well, they already had the J29 Tunnan ("barrel") so I guess they know what to do :grin:
