+76.IAP-Blackbird 3,557 Posted March 16, 2012 Who made it flyable so far and can take of verticaly?! Have it already flyable, but cant lift of the deck. Landing is also impossible with this data.ini. Maybe its to early to ask for it, but a flyable 38 would be great ;) Until Krizis will come allive What cockpit can we use for it?! Any suggestions? Any skinners on it?! penaratahiti 2 Posted March 16, 2012 First post for me guys ! Hi to everyone, and thank you so much for the modders ! I have tried to make it flyable (that's the first thing I tried ), but I have the same drawbacks as yours : impossible to take-off manually (even autopilot is highly unreliable in this phase), and landing is a real challenge. I have used the cockpit of the Mig-21F, but I think that a Mig-17 one can also match. I have extracted the *.ini file, but I can't figure what's wrong in the engine sections, etc... I think it shouldn't be a big challenge for the modders. I have also edited the Tu-22 Blinder, witht the Tu-128 cockpit, putting a ground radar instead of the air radar, but when I start a mission (it always starts in middle air, not on an airbase in Iceland), I collide with my wingman Penaratahiti

+Coupi 4,401 Posted March 16, 2012 (edited) Hello, Why not the MiG-21UM cockpit? I tried it yesterday with the pitot deleted. I don't know how to modify it more... In other hand, this TK's Forger is very fun to fly... Streakeagle launched this discussion: http://combatace.com/topic/71145-call-to-soviet-cockpit-3d-modders-yak-38/ Bye bye Coupi. Try editing the SLThrustDry= for the main engine. It is measured in N, so that means 10.0 kN would equal => SLThrustDry=10000.0 Find out the maximum thrust of the Yak's engine, and make sure it is in there. ...Get it? +Gepard 11,324 Posted March 17, 2012 SidDogg, you give this plane much to much thrust. To get the Yak-38 in the air from a carrier it would be a better way to change the lift system. Here is my quick and dirty fix: [LeftFlap] SystemType=HIGHLIFT_DEVICE CLiftdc=0.1336 CDdc=0.0185 Cmdc=0.0514 DeltaStallAlpha=-1.97 AreaRatio=2.200 DeploymentMethod=MANUAL Setting[1].Angle=10.0 Setting[1].DeployValue=123.5 Setting[2].Angle=35.0 Setting[2].DeployValue=123.5 MaxDeflection=35.0 MinDeflection=0.0 ControlRate=0.2 ModelNodeName=flap_L ReverseModelOrientation=TRUE [RightFlap] SystemType=HIGHLIFT_DEVICE CLiftdc=0.1336 CDdc=0.0185 Cmdc=0.0514 DeltaStallAlpha=-1.97 AreaRatio=2.200 DeploymentMethod=MANUAL Setting[1].Angle=10.0 Setting[1].DeployValue=123.5 Setting[2].Angle=35.0 Setting[2].DeployValue=123.5 enlarged the Aere MaxDeflection=35.0 MinDeflection=0.0 ControlRate=0.2 ModelNodeName=flap_R ReverseModelOrientation=TRUE I have simply enlarged the AreaRatio=1.000 to AreaRatio=2.200 This enables the Autopilot to take off. Manually it is still impossible, but perhaps the enlarging to 2.5 or 3.0 could fix it also for manual takeoff.

Because honestly, it ought to be just ONE engine putting out 66.7kN... The entries for the two lift engines seem about spot on. I'd imagine it is something else prohibiting it from vertical take off, then... Because the main issue there would be thrust-to-weight ratio, when you think about it That's why I did it the way I did. If you actually try it in-game, It doesn't just rocket into the air, either. SidDogg
+Gepard 11,324 Posted March 17, 2012 Its true, that it has one engine with 68kN. But you gave it two engines with 66,7 which is a sum of 133,4 kN. And this is much to much. You must set it to 34kN each engine in the FM to get the more or less correct thrust.
+SidDogg 130 Posted March 17, 2012 Yes, I KNOW that, that is what make sense. But there is an issue, which is that this thrust amount is NOT helping the jet into the air the way it ought to... When loaded, the takeoff weight is still under 30,000 lbs. Now, WITH the lift fans, the airplane SHOULD be able to vertically take off. But it does not. why??? And we must also face the fact that the flaps aren't very large, either. I'm thinking that it is something about those lift fans, perhaps the way their thrust goes... SidDogg
+Gepard 11,324 Posted March 17, 2012 Yes the flaps are relativly small, but they have boundary layer control, so they are much more efficent. The problem is, that the low speed charctertics of the Yak-39 FM are poor. THe KI is cheating while takeoff, so it can start with the chages i made with the increased flap ratio. Perhaps we must set it to 3.000 to have the chance to start from the Kiev ourself. Or we include slats in the FM. But does the Yak-38 hadh had slats?
+russouk2004 6,959 Posted March 17, 2012 Didnt someone mention we need a Fix It section for NA ?
+Gepard 11,324 Posted March 21, 2012 Yesterday and today i wasted my time to play with the Yak-38 FM. The take off was possible with the methode i descriped above, but i found out, that the KI was now impossible to land the bird. Vertical take off is impossible because the Lift engines are not switched on in game. The command line in the data.ini were missing. I made them working and the plan stated to play somersault on the flightdeck, so i switched them off. Finally i changed the Kiev carrier, moved the starting position, moded the catapults added arrestor cables. Now it works. Not 100% perfect, but in the most cases. I uploaded this bird as Yak-38M (and the modified Kiev included in the file). You find it in the download section. Would be nice to hear what you think about it. Snailman 517 Posted November 21, 2012 Hi folks, I have fixed the Yak-38 for you. I included a screen shot of a hover. It can take off, hover, maneuver while hovering, and IN THEORY it can land too (I'm not that good of a pilot LOL) . Not sure if the AI can use this feature, but at least a player can. If someone can teach me how to make a proper cockpit, I can make a fully functional plane addon from yours. And also made two nice skins already. Gepard, I have to say thanks for your work on this great plane. I learned a lot from your addon!!! I was lucky not only to touch but to sit into a real one not long ago. Do335 382 Posted November 23, 2012 just thinking... but what happens when only 50% fuel is loaded? i know the real av-8 can only do stovl in a combat loadout. or it can do vertical takeoff with reduced fuel and aar
Snailman 517 Posted November 24, 2012 (edited) I have fine tuned the engines, so it can take off only with realistic weight. When I'm ready I'll upload a beta for testing the flight capabilities. I tried a vertical take off with 2.2 tons payload, thats really impossible. As it has to be. An early Yak-38 with 1 tons payload can VTOL, and a Yak-38M with about 1200. The M can STOL with a bit more than 2 tons, but its almost a ditch. Better stay with "historical" payload ))) Also I could take of and land from Kiev very nicely, STOL takeoff from the No1 position (due to "catapult" limitation you can't do a VTOL start), and a VTOL landing also. Its very difficult to fly in hover, almost like a real one... huhhh.. Reducing fuel helps in this case, but the fuel tanks are already limited. With 2x 400L droptank and 2 AAMs it can make a nice CAP, but keep extra fuel for landing... its not easy, and lift engines also burn fuel. Edit, I forgot scrshots... The first hover test Loadout screen Pointblank range ))))))))))) Edited November 24, 2012 by Snailman
