The End Of An Era.....

Recommended Posts

...After 18 years being part of America's Forward Deployed Naval Force, HS-14 time as a squadron draws to a close.

Heading back to San Diego to become HSC-14 sometime next year.

To be honest, I'm just happy to be a part of history :good:

I thought I would share this GoPro made by our squadron, perhaps someone here might like it...

Day And Night! :salute:

SidDogg,

Pardon me for sounding ignorant, but what is the difference between a HS squadron and a HSC squadron, is it just the mission (i.e. anti-shipping, anti-sub, etc.)?

Awesome video by the way, thank you for sharing and serving out country.

I believe it means the squadron will switch its focus from pure anti-submarine to dual anti-sub/anti-surface. I don't know practically what that means for the people involved.

HS is Helicopter Antisubmarine. It's going away.

Being Replaced by HSC = Helicopter Sea Combat = SAR, CSAR, ASuW, VERTREP, NSW, AMCM, etc.

The ASW role is going to HSM = Helicopter Maritime Strike = SAR, CSAR, ASW, ASuW, SSC, VERTREP, NSW, etc.

HSM also used to be HSL = Helicopter Antisubmarine Light...

Am I the only one who thinks the DoD needs to get itself a logic checker??

If HSC = Helicopter Sea Combat, why is Helicopter Maritime Strike = HSM??? That's the acronym for Helicopter Strike Maritime. What's wrong with HMS?

If so, shouldn't it be HCS = Helicopter Combat Sea?

So, in this acronym we'll reverse the order of the letters, but in this one we're going to leave it as is.

What's wrong with HMS?

That it sounds British in a naval unit nomenclature context?

Back in the day, HCS stood for Helicopter Combat Support... H-3's and H-53's and such.

HCS doesn't exist anymore, because HSC took over their role, also... :dntknw:

Believe it or not, some people may very well pay attention to those things...

Like so many other things the DoD does, it doesn't matter that it's consistent with everything else, just that someone with authority was able to justify it in a vacuum.
