Wrench Posted September 2, 2014 Author Posted September 2, 2014 I LIKE those!! About time we see some Kiwi Kittyhawks!! Shouldn't the forward band meet up with the wing band at the wing root??? Similar to the P-40F for the 69th FS at Henderson, I never finished ... must do so!! 3 Quote

Thanks mate, a lot of reference drawings and models do it that way but as you can see in this photo from a book I have the forward band stops before just before the wing root. The wing bands either end where I have done them or they end at the front of the landing gear fairing which will also be painted white. Edited September 2, 2014 by dtmdragon 1 Quote

Wrench Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 (edited) FG-1D, VMF-213, on board USS SAIDOR (CVE-117) mid-45ish (edit: squadron disbanded in early 46) and what's with the wing walkways??? IF they were visible, they'd be up against the wing root, and the fuselage base, NOT mid-chord of the wing. Considering the steps are at the lower fuselage side of the wing roots The only time I've actually SEEN the non-skid coating was on an ex-FN -7 that used to come here to Santa Monica airport in the early 70s. USN birds, according to ALL my source materials (included my very own eyes) never had them Edited September 6, 2014 by Wrench Quote
amariani Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Thanks for the id Wrench! As for the wing walkways, your point does make sense. But, on page 10 of "F4U CORSAIR in action" there's a picture of an F4U-1 from VMF-225 where the wing walk is clearly seen about a foot inside of the wingfold seam line, and again, on page 22 there's another picture of an F4U-1D from VBF-83 taking off from USS ESSEX where the wing walk is also at about the same location as in the other picture. Wrench Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 don't have the detail & scale book I suggest getting a copy. In fact, having the entire series is a MUST for skinners & modders. It really helps in finding what goes where. Correctly. bending on the wings along the landing gear. that's the wing fold hinge point, as illustrated in the diagram above from the parts catalogue. At the end of the day, it's what the majority of the evidence shows. Especially on the overall DNGB, you'll find they really don't show, even if they existed. (and the orthographic film of the time is quite "iffy" on contrast differences and color changes). Quote
Wrench Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 Those sure look like my KAW Corsairs (TMF), and have been available for QUITE a while. Quote
amariani Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Actually they're mine, like the ones below, but I do have KAW and PTO packs (which I use a lot!). 2 Quote
