Centurion-1 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I've been meaning to do one of these a number of times now but I always die embarrasingly soon into a campaign. Oh well. Need to consider some other campaign perhaps. Quote
Z09SS Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Progressing... I missed the warehouse and I'd ordered my wingman to drop his bombs on something else. Two MiG-17F objected to our egress, one putting moderate damage to the wingman before I could hit him with the gun. As usual, the AIM-9B was useless on fighters. 1 Quote
beachav8r Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 I started this campaign long before the rules for daily progress were added... Did I miss something in the rules? I thought it just said to post your progress for the day, not necessarily that you had to fly a mission per day. I might have missed the implication though... Quote

I might have missed the implication though... I think I'm overachieving. I think the "rules" are per day of playing not per day of game. But I'm having fun and not hurting anyone but digital communists... 2 Quote

Z09SS Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I got my blood up and fangs out and just HAD to nail a MiG-19S that jumped us on egress. As a result I had to divert to Köln-Hahn instead of landing at my home base of Nörvenich. Considering I'd taken some 14.7mm fire over the target, I should have just called for help and beat feet. Still, the Starfighter gets decent mileage at 30k feel MSL and 210 KIAS. 1 Quote
Z09SS Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Tactical Reconnaissance is such a milk-run if you don't chase rabbits. Quote
Z09SS Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Never. Save. Your. Wingman. I ingressed, hit the target, and was egressing nicely when wingy starts screaming that he can't shake someone. MiG-17F had padlocked on his butt so I went back to help. Then I departed the aircraft and couldn't recover. Nylon let-down into the waiting arms of some damn commie army unit. Since he didn't actually die, I think Oberleutnant Winter will reappear in 1968 in Red Hammer. Quote
Saavedra Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) It occurs to me that we have non-Skunks helicopters in the files section such as Hueys and Cobras. Depending on timeframe and conflict, it would not necessarily be out of the question to postpone pilot retirement until you have tried a CSAR mission. Just hit "refly" and take a screenshot of your pilot before doing a rescue mission. If the CSAR fails, that´s the end-state of your pilot. If the CSAR succeeds, you continue flying. Conflicts like Vietnam and Desert Storm may be considered particularly conducive towards adding this mechanic to Dead is Dead. Edited May 5, 2015 by Saavedra Quote
Stratos Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Can't understand your idea, you propose to flight a mission in choppers? Quote
Centurion-1 Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 If I understand it correctly, I believe Saavedra proposes creating a helicopter mission with the target area to be the area the pilot went down. Maybe use recon mission type so you get mission success when flying over the downed pilot. If you hit the save mission button you can edit it with the mission editor IIRC? So just offset the mission start time, etc, maybe move in some ground unit to capture our unfortunate pilot in order to make it "interesting". Hehe it would be cool if we had a "downed pilot" ground object, armed with just a carbine or pistol Infiltrating the DDR in a Huey might be a dicey proposition though :) Quote
Saavedra Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Pretty much. You get shot down. Is your pilot killed? Sorry, campaign is over. Is your pilot captured? Hit "Refly", take a screencap of your pilot´s current status, and fly a helicopter mission to see if you can continue flying with that pilot in the future, or if you were unable to recover him/her. Ideally, you would use two transport Hueys escorted by two gunships (Hueys or Cobras). The idea is flying to the point in the map where your aircraft went down (or the closest point on land if your plane went down in the sea), and landing with your transport Huey there. Wait for a few seconds, then take off and return to the closest friendly base or ship. If you lose two choppers/transport choppers on the way in, the mission is aborted (the LZ is too hot). If the transport chopper carrying the captured pilot is shot down with no survivors, the mission is aborted. If you return home with the captured pilot, however, your pilot has been rescued and you can continue the campaign. Say, Stratos, are those troops I see sitting on the edges of the Hueys? And another question: has anyone gotten the doorguns on the Hueys to work? Quote
jeanba Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Tried a 6-days war Vautour campiagn : my first mission was defense supression, my winbgman and I destroyed a S-60 and a K-19, mission accomplished Unfortunatly, I had ammunition left and too much fun, attacked another S60 + ZPU-1 batteries : got shot down => restart another campaign BUT WHAT A FUN !!!! Nyghtfall Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 (edited) Here I am. VA-155 Silver Foxes with A-4E Skyhawk during Rolling Thunder Campaign, Vietnam 1965. 4 Missions so far with 2 losses in the last mission - RIP guys! P.S.: forgot to take a screenshot of mission 3's end, just a screenshot of action as stand-in, sorry :/ Edited May 17, 2015 by Nyghtfall 2 Quote
Nyghtfall Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 (edited) Did some flying today again and made good progress. Several Warehouses, a fuel tank, an ammo bunker and a good amount of AAA was detroyed by the Silver Foxes with the sad loss of another Pilot. Enemy defense was heavy as ususal and I got hit and lost my right elevator and the right speed brake, but I made a safe return to the carrier. On the way to a fuel tank deep within enemy's land I got hit again by AAA. Although I ejected successfully a safe reovery wasn't possible, so I was declared MIA. DID is a nice idea...you focus more on stayling alive and return healthy to the carrier instead of attacking the last AA, because you still have 10 cannonrounds left. :) Edited May 23, 2015 by Nyghtfall 1 Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 (edited) John Palpat, 36th FBS 8th FBW.Served from the beginning of the Korean war to late december. Most kills are Yaks and a dozen Migs starting from chinese intervention. Lots of NK and Chinese troops, too. Had to bail out once after a mid-air collision. Was finally shot down by a MiG-15 above North Korea after being intercepted during a bombing run and after having shot down a soviet ace in the following dogfight. Survived the ejection and spent the rest of the war as P.O.W. Edited August 22, 2015 by Emp_Palpatine 2 Quote
alexbuko Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) Hi there! I started a new OP Darius Campaign as a USN F/A-18C pilot today and completed my first strike mission. Surprisingly I was awarded the Medal Of Honor after this mission - see the pics. This Thread is funny and I´m happy that someone started the DID idea, for I tried to enhance my simulation experience with the same idea for a few years now - with changing success. Thanks Dave for this kick starter! I wish all the hardcore simmers good luck in the skies and many successful DID reports here! Best regards,Alex. Report: After taking off for a strike mission shortly before 6AM, I decided for a high in - high out mission profile as I laid my waypoints as far as possible from enemy airfields, SAMs and other strongpoints. The few radars trying to lock on from a distance were easily jammed by our powerful onboard ECMs. During the approach I had to attack an intercepting Iranian F4 that slept through the fighter escort with AMRAAMs and downed it. Shortly before the attack run my wingman downed a second Iranian fighter - a Saeqh - with an AIM9X and so the strike on a Uranium storage facility and chemical storage tanks near Ardekan was no problem and successful. On the way back no enemy fighters managed to intercept my flight. The landing on the carrier was ditched in warm and soft morning light - what a mission! Edited January 10, 2016 by alexbuko 1 Quote
Z09SS Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Since this pilot was just a POW at the end of Red Thunder, I recycled him into Red Hammer. Not dead yet! Still using a Luftwaffe F-104G, this time with JBG 36. 1 Quote
Z09SS Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Here's my end of day pilot record. And some random screen shots of today's four missions. Escort Tactical Recon Same CAS as above. I didn't take any screenies of the SEAD mission where there was no primary target AAA to attack. 2 Quote
Z09SS Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I am still in it! Even if I don't have much time to play in the past few months. This is several missions since last update. On the way back from strafing some fuel tanks (and other things at that airbase) Got a runway... and the fuel tanks and two parked An-2BP and two MiG-21PFM that tried to intercept us. Quote
Z09SS Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Hauptmann Winter ist todt. Got high and slow around an SA-6 battery and didn't have the umpf to dodge it. Quote
Z09SS Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 New pilot! Red Tide flying an F-100D from Wiesbaden-Erbenheim with the 509th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. Quote
Z09SS Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 I'm still in it! Missions out over Berlin suck because the F-100D just doesn't carry enough gas to play for long. Have to just shoot and scoot. Quote
