~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary of New Campaigns
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This add-on supplies two new campaigns for the SF2NA Expansion Pack, both set in the Mediterranean early to mid 80's. Both campaigns involve fictionalized takes on real world events:

- Powder Keg: After Israeli armored units invade southern Lebanon in June 1982, driving PLO forces north to Beruit and routing Syrian tank regiments, the Soviet Union dispatches a large amphibious group anchored by two carriers to intervene. Standing in the way is one lone U.S. carrier group: the USS Eisenhower and her escorts. With little support from feckless NATO allies, the Eisenhower sails north to intercept the Soviet 5th Eskadra and Black Sea Fleet.

- El Dorado Canyon: In June 1986 the Reagan Administration decides to take action against Libya following several years of naval and air skirmishes between the US Navy and the Libyan military as well as a string of terrorist attacks against civilian targets in the Middle East and Europe, all financed or supported by Libya. Codenamed "El Dorado Canyon," this operation will be a coordinated series of strikes by USAF and USN aircraft against Libyan military and industrial targets over the course of five days.

Eric, quick question; nothing in this will clash with the North Cape expansion will it?

Viggen:

No, it shouldn't. The entire time I was testing this I had the following installed to one Mod folder:

- SF2NA Expansion Pack

- SF2NA RSR

- SF2 North Cape

- SF2 MedCrisis

If you have North Cape, you should know that I am currently uploading a large update to that mod. It adds three new campaigns and the aircraft and ground units to support those campaigns:

- Fighting Withdrawal (86): Just hours after the Warsaw Pact invades Central Europe, Soviet armored columns and airborne troops launch an assault on northern Norway. As Norwegian army units fall back, the USS Nimitz and her escorts are ordered to withdraw from the waters off Norway, lest the carrier and her invaluable air wing fail prey to Soviet bombers filling the skies over Norway.

- Return to Norway (86): With the ground war in Central Europe stalemated and the Soviet Northern Fleet defeated in the North Atlantic following a failed assault on Iceland, the USS Nimitz returns to Norway with the USS Forrestal and a Marine amphibious group to retake the airfields and ports under Soviet control in northern half of the country. The Marines will seize Narvik, splitting the Soviet occupation forces, while relying on the two carriers' air wings to provide a covering umbrella of air support.

- Assault on the Kola Peninsula (86): Three weeks after the successful landing of Marines near Narvik and subsequent defeat of Soviet forces in Norway, the Nimitz and Forrestal battle groups take position in the Barents Sea to strike Soviet air bases and naval facilities on the Kola Peninsula.

about time somebody found a use for the Eastern Med Terrain! Thanks Eric!

Stuntman:

I haven't tested those missions, but there's a good chance they will work. This mod uses the same Libya terrain, although FRPignon's uses an updated tile set. I've made some minor customizations to the TARGETS.INI and TYPES.INI, but I doubt those would be significant enough to cause problems.

You should check the aircraft and ground objects used in the missions, though. My mod may use different names for the aircraft and ground objects -- nothing a little editing can't fix, though.

First of all many thanks for another great package, it's nice to see that other terrains are being used now. I have a few questions;  why is your El Dorado Canyon campaign fictional? Isn't it based on the real world operation?  Anyway I have no problem with fictional stuff, just asking because I love history.

If you have North Cape, you should know that I am currently uploading a large update to that mod.

Have you discovered any bugs in the terrain?  As you might remember, time ago I sent you an updated TFD and a small correction to an airfield position, I was wondering if I could do anything to improve it.  Baltika really showed his skills with this terrain, tiling the fjords is no easy task.

blaze95:

The El Dorado Canyon campaign included in this mod is a semi-fictional take on the real operation. This campaign imagines what might have happened had the U.S. engaged in a five day bombing campaign -- something like Operation Desert Fox, the four day 1998 bombing campaign against Iraq -- instead of a single day set of strikes. It also supposes that Libya was aggressive in its response to those strikes. So, this campaign is inspired by the real El Dorado Canyon operation, but does not purport to be a faithful re-creation of that historic event.

As for the NorthCape terrain, the expanded and updated North Cape add-on, which is now available for download, does use your corrected .TFD file. I tested every airfield on the map -- every single one. I can say that all are now useable. Your .TFD took care of the problem with trees on the runways. I adjusted the positions of around a dozen runways to deal with rough/inappropriate terrain. All airfields are now useable.

There are still a few where the runway disappears from view at one end at ground level, but they're still useable -- aircraft don't bounce around. And they're very few -- I think I can count them on one hand.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

BTW I think I can fix those runway bugs in NorthCape, if you PM with me a list of the ones affected by such problem, tomorrow I might take a look at them.

Eric, I have another question. In the event of a scenario like this, would Turkey and Greece have gotten involved? I've never really understood their role in NATO's defensive structure.

Some thoughts on your questions

82: pretty sure Greece wasnt back in the command structure yet. Greece and Spain have been in and out over the years. Turkey would have played although without a direct threat to soveriegnty would probably have needed enticement in form of more weapons. Kinda like how they participated in Desert Storm

86: not likely either. Everybody else in the world (at least publicly)didnt support our action there much hence why the Vaarks had to fly such a long route NATO allies wouldnt allow overflights). Although being a fictional campaign maybe Greece, Spain or Italy got a sweet deal again on some new military toy to allow forward basing. Otherwise its a primarily Navy show. There was a book some years back by the XO(?) of the Liberty Wing thar details the AFs prep for and execution of the raid. Goes in depth on the politics and pub opinion ofcthe times

Viggen:

Daddyairplanes basically has it right. In the Powder Keg scenario, NATO allies have generally decided that the situation is not a NATO problem. Greece has been intimidated into non-action. Turkey has been sweet-talked with promises of support in the dispute over Cyprus. Neither country wants to tangle with the Bear over a dispute involving Israel's invasion of Lebanon. Local commanders in Crete do make the decision to resist the Soviet airborne assault, but that decision leaves them cut off and without support from Athens. The only support they will get comes from the U.S.

In the 1986 Libya bombing campaign, it is as it was at the time: NATO allies  do not want to provide overt support lest they become targets for Libyan sponsored terrorism.

Ran into a glitch playing the El Dorado campaign as an A-7 pilot: On a strike mission against some ships (Vosper Group), the entire enemy SAG was plowing along through the desert just inshore. Don't know if this is a known issue or not. The ships were hit and they subsequently sank- into the desert floor.

I know this problem has come up with this game before; don't know what the fix is, myself. Other than that, great campaign!

jmarso:

Yeah, another occasional bug in the game that shows up. Despite a working Water map, the campaign does sometimes run the ships onto land.

I noticed that VF-103 Sluggers is included in the El Dorado Canyon campaign, but there's no skin for their Tomcats (I'm currently using the Mirage Factory Tomcat SuperPack 1.30). Is there a fix for this?

I took a look at v1.30/1.31 - we actually don't have a skin for F-14A_82 in VF-103 Sluggers livery.  We have the A+/B for the Sluggers, but not the A.  Will have to look into making one.
