TeaAndScones 2 Posted November 21, 2015 Hello. Last year, I posted a thread here to ask anyone if they had any information on a possible Su-37 'Flounder-A'; an enemy that appears in the 1994 flight sim 'US Navy Fighters'. It was apparently, an A-10-like CAS aircraft, designed to support Russian troops against US forces in-game. No one did have any info. But since then, I have managed to find a small number of images that point to the aircraft's possible existence as a design concept, under the Su-37 designation. As you can see, it employs a cranked-delta wing design, not unlike the ground-oriented F-16XL. This allows lower stall speeds than a pure-delta design. However, the engine appears to be a standard turbofan, like those employed on fighter aircraft, rather than the turbofans employed on the A-10. Wouldn't this make slow-speed a bit troublesome? And here is the virtual depiction in US Navy Fighters, pointing to its intended role as an A-10-like CAS platform. If this sparks anyone's memories or knowledge of this aircraft, sharing it would be greatly appreciated. On a second note, did there ever exist a Naval version of the F-104 'Starfighter'? The above image is the depiction is US Navy Fighters. Despite saying U.S.A.F. on the wings, in-game, it is operated by the US Navy, under the F-104N designation, complete with CATOBAR gear. Any help on this would be great too. DatBritish.
+logan4 848 Posted November 21, 2015 In real world that AC was Sukhoi's S-37 project proposal, the one before the later famous S-37 Berkut. The AC actually had a total of 17 planed hardpoints and its engine was the same as on the Yak-41 stovl main engine. Quite powerful beast. Here are some info on it, but probably you already found these. Also the "secrectprojects" forum has quite a topic on it. S-37 Project Length: 17.65m (Bedretdinov), 17.5m (Butowski) Wingspan: 12.08m (Bedretdinov), 11.8m (Butowski) (8.64m folded) Wing Area: 50 sq m Height: 5.74m Maximum speed: 1500km/h at low level, Mach 2.0 at height Maximum altitude: 17000m Range, 3000kg payload: 800km (low level) 1,500km (high level) G load: +9/-3g Supersonic G load: 8g Acceleration from 600km/h to 1100km/h at 1000m altitude: 14 secs Acceleration from 1100km/h to 1300km/h at 1000m altitude: 7.2 secs Engine: 1 x R-79M turbofan Thrust: 18,143kg Weight, Maximum: 24,970kg Weight, Normal takeoff: 16-18,000kg Weight, empty: 12000kg Internal fuel capacity: 8,300kg Normal combat payload: 5000kg Maximum combat payload: 8000kg

+Gepard 11,356 Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) In real world that AC was Sukhoi's S-37 project proposal, the one before the later famous S-37 Berkut. The designation S-37, sometimes S-47, was only for internal use in OKB Sukhoi. S stands for "swept wing" while T stands for "delta wing". (Similar to the isdelije numbers of OKB Mikoyan.) It has nothing to do with later service designations. For instance the Su-27 was developed under the index T-10. If i look to the Flounder, so it is rather a delta wing design, than a swept wing design. So i doubt, that it would have a "S-something" index. It would have had a "T-something" index. For me the Flounder looks a little bit like a modified SAAB-39 Gripen. In real life the Su-37 is one of the latest Su-27 versions which got the NATO Code: Flanker-F The F-104N is not a Navy version of the Starfighter, but a NASA version of the F-104G. 3 F-104N were built. If you want a carrierborn NAVY Starfighter. So the modding is simple. Add a tailhook and the line: CarrierBased=TRUE and it should run. +logan4 848 Posted November 22, 2015 Yes, dsawan. Few things to fix though. Unfortunately we do not have a dedicated cockpit for it so it will use a stand-in one for the time being.
