Wish List for WOFF BH&H II

Recommended Posts

Would be nice if on the Campaign 'Duty Room' menu (i.e. scoreboard) there was room for players to post pictures/images of their choice, for example aircraft, pilot portraits, memos or grafitti. Seems do-able since the bottom half of the scoreboard is almost always blank anyway.

Instead of having a single default skin for a squadron, allow the squadron to have a generic skin for each squadron member.  For example allow the creation of A,B,C,D,... skins for the RFC squadrons so each pilot could have a unique plane.  These could be assigned by the pilot's position in the squadron when they join the squadron.  Of course, ace skins should be the first choice if it exists.

Artillery spotting missions - just want to point out that artillery spotting missions flown by the AI can probably be implemented right now without much problem. As I understand it, artillery spotting had much in common with recon missions (in regard to waypoint planning) except at they are flown at 5000 ft and over the front lines instead of 15-20 000 ft and behind the lines.

Arthur Gould Lee wrote constantly of sighting artillery spotting aircraft flying at 5000 ft. Billy Bishop wrote in 'Winged Warfare' about his time as an observer flying arty-spotting missions. So it must have been a pretty common occurence during the Great War. And it seems that, like aircraft flying recon missions, upon detecting an enemy, these aircraft would dive back towards their side of the lines. They would then return afterwards after the danger had passed.

And naturally these arty aircraft often had a friendly fighter formation in the vicinity ready to support them in case of attack.

Hopefully, this sounds like something doable for the WOFF AI.

i'll cast a vote  for arty and recon type missions.  Plenty of   historic  precedents from the WWI literature. Make these unique  within the theatre of BH&H.  A  focus  on stealth with the threat of combat ,  challenging navigation , find and discovery, etc .  These type of missions have large appeal  in MS Flight Simulator already and might expand the base.

Artillery and recon missions is an excellent idea. I would laso like to see some aircraft like the Morane bullet, Gunbus, the Hansa Brandenburg seaplane (a favorite),  Felixstowe F.2A

, and Hanriot HD.2. I think seaplanes need some love , add ship attack missions and spotting fleets. Maybe even Guynemers cannon equipped Spad.

The Mission Review is a really useful feature. I get a kick out of writing a combat report from memory thru the 'Claims' menu and then going back the Mission Review to try to find out what really happened.

So it would be nice if we had the option to save every Mission Review to a text file for later viewing in case we just don't have the time or forget to look at the Mission Review.

There have been plenty of times that I have flown multiple missions in a row, intending to go back and look at the Mission Review with regards to one of those missions, only to discover that only the last mission flown is available for 'Mission Review'.

P.S. - confirmed now via Mission Review that my pilot has indeed collided with those lamp/fire drums sitting along the edge of airfields.

Btw does anyone know it the Mission Review is a 100% translation of the mission.log file ? Then it is possible to write a script to save it.

Any thoughts on improving the tactical AI? While I think the strategic AI may be the best of any flight-sim out there, I feel the tactical, or combat maneuvers AI, still needs a little work. Currently, the maneuvers chosen by the AI while in the middle of a dogfight appear to be almost totally random. There also appears to be little variation in maneuvers between turn-fighters and boom-and-zoom fighters. I imagine that this may be exceedingly difficult to code, but a boy can dream, can't he?

Also, any possibility of adding more aircraft shake when entering a stall?

There is some randomness just like in real life, exactly because otherwise it would behave like a robot, and you'd know exactly what is next.  However, it's not just "random".   Sometimes there are 2 or 3 moves available in a situation and the AI will choose (Aces have more manoeuvres to choose from and they usually perform them better etc).

More shake may be possible, sure.

Here is a simple one:

Problem: When AI scouts escort 2-seaters they are positioned directly behind and above the recon/bomber aircraft. If you fly one of these missions as the escorting scouts you quickly realize that this probably isn't how it was in real life, because you can't see the planes you are supposed to be protecting.  The line of sight is down through the floor of the cockpit of your aircraft.

Solution: Tweak the position of AI escorts so they are off to one side or the other, so you can see the planes you are supposed to be following and protecting.

Cheers!!

Hi All

I love WOFF BH&H2  ... I've loved them all. I buy everything you sell!  My dream list, in reverse order ...

1)In Third: I want to give a shout out to artillery spotting and recon missions too.

2) In Second: A few more aircraft ie, some more two-seaters especially LVGs. Sopwith Dolphin and Siemens-Schuckert (I know they were rare) but so beautiful! And DH9!

3) Finally, in first place:  some earlier aircraft to fully flesh out 1915-16, please I would love to start a campaign in Jan 1915.

I can dream!

Thanks for an amazing sim!

Happy flying all!

Seb

My wish list is down to two items:

#1). Belgian squadrons.

#2). The Sopwith Dolphin and the Pfalz D.XII.

I know a lot of people have their holy grail missing aircraft, normally small production types, but both of these were readily available on the Western Front in 1918. A couple two-seaters could also be cool - the Handley-Page Type O, Salmson 2A2, and Friedrichshafen G.III all come to mind - but there's a lot of ways to handle that, and I'm also guessing most of the game mileage comes from the single-seat fighters anyway.

I have a 'wish' item that relates to the News (newspaper in campaign). Because the game skips days that have historically bad weather there are certain days were the news will never be seen, which seems a shame. I wonder if there is a simple way to have the game show the war news for the no-fly days as well?

A few possibilities:

1) OBD might be able to change the code to enable this.

2) Someone (myself or someone else) should be able to mod the news files so the dates when news is scheduled to be displayed no longer corresponds with days which are skipped due to bad weather. However, this would require two mods: one for the default weather and another for users of the latest version of the Historical Weather mod, which adds in several more days cancelled due to bad weather.

3) You can always go the news folder and read the news items directly from the text files, although that does admittedly kill some of the immersion.

Thinking out loud here, a change to the code should be relatively easy, by comparing the campaign date with the news date and a flag indicating whether the news has been displayed or not. If not, set the code so the news displays on the next flyable campaign date without an existing news event. Another option might be to allow multiple news messages to display on a single day if a prior news event has been skipped due to weather. This would be better than a mod that would have to be updated anytime a news item or "No Fly" day is added or changed.

Wow, I had no idea how extensive this problem is. Looking just at 1916, for example, there are over 40 news reports that are not displaying currently because they occur on "No Fly" days, in which all flights are scrubbed and your pilot advances to the next flyable day in the campaign. I am currently working on a mod to the news files that would cure this problem for approximately 90% of the news reports that aren't currently displaying in the campaign. So far, I have completed work on the year 1916.

A better solution (which would also be compatible with the current news and any news mods) would be if the code could be adjusted so that news reports could be read even on days when flights have been washed out. This would avoid the problem of having to adjust the news dates so they display only on flyable campaign days and would also work if news reports are added or changes to the weather files are made in any future patches or mods. This would also likely be simpler than the code fix I suggested in my previous post. I don't know if this change to the code is possible, though.

Any thoughts, Scout or anyone else?

Looks like Pol and WM have come through - again!

According to WM, news will soon be able to be read, even if you have skipped time due to "No Fly" days, leave, capture, hospitalization, etc., so it looks like there is no need for me to revise the news files. Thanks, OBD! (Please correct me if I am wrong or misstated anything).

Not only that, for all you tough guys, there will soon be an option to disable cancelled flights due to bad weather, allowing you to fly in all sorts of muck and filth, if you are into that sort of thing, that is!

Thanks, guys!

I think it would be a great visual addition to have the flight leaders and the player, if he is flight leader, send up flares for some of the commands he give, especially for rejoin and return to base.

When your pilot dies, I'd like to have the option to continue playing as one of the computer-generated wingmen currently assigned to your dead pilot's squadron.

That way, you benefit more from helping build up the records of the AI-generated squad mates, and you get that immersive effect of having one pilot pass the baton on to the next pilot.

Albrecht - The "Re-Enlist option" goes some way toward solving this.  Granted you don't get to incarnate as one of the surviving squaddies but it's close.

Hi, I am back to WOFF / WOTR and really enjoy it, but I have a small request:

1 - For quick combat and quick scenario, I would like the "pilot never dires" activated by default because I use them to train myself and usually quit the mission one I have done what I wanted, unnesecarily losing a pilot and having to go thorugh the whole creation process

2 Would it be possible to have a rpm icon ?

Regarding yours jeanba ;

1) Enable Outcomes set to "Easy"  in Workshops until you fly campaign maybe easiest.

2) RPM icon ?  You mean in the F5 dials (WOFF) or SHIFT+F6 in WOTR ?  You can do this yourself.  Press CTRL key with 1,2,3,4 or 5.  it cycles through various dials.  K switches between metric and imperial dials.

For point 1, "easy" in campaigns menas "pilot never die", and this is not what I want.

But for quick mission and quick scenario, I need this because I use quick missions for training, checks ..., so I often die or leave the mission over ennemy territory, "killing" my pilot inadvertedly.

So I would like to have two setting, one for campaigns and one for quick secanrri and missions, if possible

For point 2, I did not find a RPM icon in WOTR nor WOFF :(

Please excuse me if I mentioned this before, but I would love to see the ability to transfer RFC/RNAS pilots from squadrons in France and Flanders back to the UK and vice versa. It would allow campaigns with periods of duty on Home Establishment.

There is already a button in QC, and Quick Scenario screen for pilot never dies. So just make yourself a checklist to remember to tick it.  OR if you always forget do what I said and set to Easy then go turn it off before you fly campaign -  at least this way if you forget to turn it off again, no harm is done.

2. Ah yes there is no RPM the - I am not sure if it's possible to add.  There are several listed in there to choose from in viewui.xml  but no RPM listed.  There may be no code for that.
