"Options" drop-down menu box is empty
Erik replied to Jimko's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
I am certain that would not do any good. There is nothing in any of the account settings that control how web pages on your machine are displayed. The fact that both FireFox and IE are doing the same exact thing leads me to believe that the machine's software environment is preventing pop-ups or java style applets from running, or local browser settings that are causing the problem. Do you have a popup blocker or internet security suite installed like McAfee? -

The warn notification is standard with all members. You can see your warn level but you can't see other people's warn level just like they can't see yours. Basically it's a moderator's tool and will always be there. Ignore it unless you've done something that warrants a moderator warning you about, which I doubt will ever happen. IE8 ... That explains it. Because IE8 is still Beta software I hate to even begin diagnosing problems. It's possible that Java isn't supported under IE8 at this time as they might not have released a Java platform for IE8. I really don't know how to advise you on that. I would however do the following. Download and install FireFox. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ You can then use that browser to determine if it's a browser issue, which I'm betting. As a side note: IE8 is designed for higher strength security while web browsing. One of the options in the Tools > Options > Advanced? (I think) allows you to put a check mark (select a radio button) but allowing java applets to run. I'm guessing but I'm betting the security on your stock installation of IE8 is probably set to not allow java or popups from our site. Erik -

Do you have Java installed on your machine? I believe those buttons are Java applets. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp Erik -
How do i Update my files?
Erik replied to Silverbolt's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
Silverbolt ... you should be able to edit your own files. I've checked the settings and they appear correct, so I'm a bit confused. 1. Did you upload the file? 2. Does it appear in your Manage Files location? 3. You're sure you're looking in the right place? Just to check go to the page like you're going to download the file (where the download buttons are). Before you click the download button on the lower right of the page do you have the option that says "edit file" or any options at all? Erik -
How do i Update my files?
Erik replied to Silverbolt's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
My Controls > Manage Your Files > Takes you to your list of files you've uploaded. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;req=ucp_files From there click on the file you want to update. In the lower right of the screen that comes up which is the actual file uploaded you should have an option to "edit your file" click that link. You should now be taken to what looks like the upload screen. Here you can re-upload a new file or re-upload a new screenshot. Hope that's what you're looking for. Let me know if you have problems. I don't want to detract from the thread and I'm sure my humor is probably only funny to me but those aren't "problems" they're "features". <chuckles>

There's always different oddities changing between forums and you've happened upon one this forum software doesn't offer. Sorry about the bad news. There is however another way to stay informed of all the news in any given forum. Go to the top level of the forum you want to keep up to date with. For OFF those would include the forums like OFF - General Discussion, etc. Once you're there you'll see all the posts in that given forum and if you look to the right on the top right corner you'll see an "Options" button. Left click that to open the drop down menu and there you can select "Subscribe to this forum." Then you can set the options for what you want to be notified of, example: all new posts. Next go to your My Controls panel > Forum Subscriptions > (or click here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=50) You should see the forums listed that you are subscribed to and you can now set your notification preference. The forum will email you depending on what you choose a daily, immediate, etc notification of the updates you request. Subsequently you can subscribe to individual topics as well using the same method described above by using the "Options" button located at the top of all forums and topics, then choosing subscribe. Managing individual topic notification and subscriptions can be handled by going to My Controls panel > Topic Subscriptions > (or click here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=26). There you can remove topics, and change notification settings. It's not a per forum new posts button, but it's a handy way to get the job done and stay in touch. Other than that I'm afraid, as already mentioned, the My Assistant and New Posts button are the only alternatives I'm aware for a complete list. Now individually there's a notification icon that most don't know what it's there for and I may get shot for telling you but here goes. Let's say you open a main forum like OFF - General Discussion. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showforum=204 In the list that appears you'll see an orange box looking thing with a little white corner. That box indicates that there are posts in that topic that you haven't read. Clicking that orange box takes you to the first post in that topic that you haven't read. You can quickly scan through the forums and be alerted by this orange box that there's something there you haven't seen before. Since all new posts in topics automatically float to the top all your orange boxes will be shown first so you don't have to scan the entire forum index, just until the orange boxes aren't there. So I guess in a few ways this board will accommodate what you're looking for it's just done a little differently. Another thing that alerts you to new posts is the aircraft in the crosshairs on the forum index or sub category index (read: like OFF). If the aircraft is grayed out then there are no new posts in that thread (read: like OFF - General Discussion). If however the aircraft is dark with a flashing red dot then there are new posts. Each skin is a bit different but for the most part the notification of new posts is very apparent. Once you get used to this board and it's features I'm sure you'll be impressed it's very well rounded and robust. Hope that helps. Erik

I totally misunderstood. You're taking that smaller scale board and turning it into a larger scale board all by hand? That's talent and patience. -

The download section is having some work done on its software. It will be available off and on throughout the duration of the repairs for testing. There is no guarantee that any download you start will finish during the repair window. Download at your own risk of stress. At this time there is no estimated time for completion. We are hoping to keep the downtime to a minimum. I'll post back here when the work is complete. Thanks for understanding.

Quite often it takes a papal blessing. Tonight you're in luck, it's all you can eat fish and chips night at the Vatican.

Prob with CA site
Erik replied to 76.IAP-Blackbird's topic in Site Support / Bug Reports / Suggestions
The problem is NOT related to the OFF guys in any way. To my disheartening dismay it's coincidental with their arrival and happens at a time when I'd like to show them we're not a fly by night operation. At this point after I was able to recover the machine I have three possible suspects. 1. A DOS (Denial Of Service) attack. 2. Someone using a download accelerator like FlashGet or one of the other programs to download files from our site. This mimics a DOS in that these programs open multiple connections to the server to download a single file. Much like Limewire where you get parts of a file from different people and in the end you get a complete file. Problem here is the site is the only person sharing the file and the multiple connections are opened to a single point. The really sad part of this is that end users don't quite understand the nature of the internet. If you're on a 1MB connection and you open one connection it will try to fill that connection up to 1MB (your cap). If you open 10 connections you divide your 1MB connection 10 times so you'll likely end up with 10 transfers of 100K each. Download accelerators will NOT increase your throughput or your ability to receive files faster. If I find this is the actual case we'll be removing the culprits without warning. Sorry. 3. The search engines like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc also download files for archive purposes. Now in the case of the download manager they'd be denied the files but they'd still try to open the connection. I've been having problems with the aggressive nature of one such crawler bot that I haven't quite resolved so I'm not ruling this one out either. Either way any of these have the same affect. Me humbly saying "SORRY!" -
Guys I'm on it ... been working with the server all morning. Locally resetting your cookies was probably coincidental with the server coming back after some changes this morning. I'll continue to work on things until we have a solid and robust home. You can expect some mild interruptions and I'll try to keep them at a minimum. I'll let you know when the work is complete and how we're doing along the way. Here's a snap shot of what I was working on this morning. When the server load gets above 20 it's no good. When we see loads into the 400 range it's really not a good.

Request for OFF forum Skinners Section
Erik replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I just received the orders on my desk, but unfortunately someone forgot to sign them. I'll send them back across the chain of command for proper documentation before denying the request. Right so to the point gentlemen ... would this be a forum area specifically for OFF? I would think this best as skinning or modding isn't the same between platforms. I'll stand down until further clarification can be reached. -
hmmm ... well somewhere in one of our many software upgrades we may have been forced to recount the member's post count and at that time who knows which forums may have been pruned which might account for the low count numbers. knowing the participating level of the OFF group I'm betting you all will have post counts higher than 1000 by the weekend. Kevin ... U' duh man! Nice easter egg. :) Thanks! --- Cash question: PayPal doesn't require you to have an account and you can use your debit card or checking account (read: cash). There's a lot of reasons we use this system but the primary one is it allows for complete automation so we don't have to manually create and remove account subscriptions. Thanks to all for the support in all it's forms we receive. Erik

Saw the Star Trek Movie preview and was completely surprised. I didn't know they were even making one. Where have I been? Both should be worth the watch once they hit DVD. :) E

So far before the half: #1 Diet Pepsi Max - The guy standing out of the limo and getting hit by the roof of the parking garage, and the one where he's changing the bulb in the light on the side of the barn made me laugh. #2 Budweiser - The stick (tree) fetching clydesdale was hilarious. The horse didn't even get a treat ... "showoff". hahaha #3 ETrade - Stretching the golden vocal cords ... incredibly funny. #4 EFlowers - Don't send boxed flowers you never know what they'll say. "Nobody want's to see you naked." Too funny. Erik
