  1. Von Paulus, As the firm I am dealing with does not have the CM690 Advance II and bearing in mind your comments on the CM690, I have stayed with the Antec but gone for the 1200 Black, which I believe will have ample room for the 5870. Do you have any thoughts on this case? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  2. Von Paulus, Which dimension of the case am I looking at that needs to be bigger, is it the depth or the height? The reason I am asking is that the cm690 II Advance is not listed, but the CM690 is. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  3. Von Paulus, I have changed the PSU to a Corsair 850W (CMPSU-850TXUK) and the graphics card to the 2gb 5870, the case is a standard black ATX model, which I am trying to change to the Antec 300 midi black. I am not sure how to use the calculator, I tried and it showed the system as using 639W which is why I have upped the PSU. Do you think the 850w PSU will be adequate for my needs? Again thank you for your help and patience with me. Rugbyfan1972
  4. Von Paulus, I was also perhaps mistakenly thinking that 2gb of ram on the graphics card would lead to better frame rates on the games and thus kind of make the card equal to the next card up the chain as it were, ie in this case a 2gb 5850 would be equal to a 1gb 5870. Also another question is a 700W PSU powerful enough for the system that I have ordered assuming I either stay with the 2gb 5850 or change it to the 2gb 5870 and have all 10 usb ports in operation at once (I am just thinking worst case scenario for the PSU). Also will the system have adequate cooling as it is or will I need to get some more fans built into it (I will not be overclocking any part of the system) Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  5. Von Paulus, I figured the 2gb card would be better than the 1gb card and also the 5850 was £37 cheaper than the 1gb 5870, but on having another look at the prices the 2gb 5870 is only £50 dearer than the card I have opted for, at the moment my monitor resolution is set to 1024 x 768 as that is the one I am comfortable using and it doesn't push my 8600GT to extremes. The reason that I have opted for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit is that I am taking a belt and braces approach as I do not want to get burned later by realising that I have bought the wrong version. Would you advise going for the 2gb 5870 instead of the 2gb 5850? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  6. Hi, I have just ordered a new PC and was wondering if anyone can tell me how good the following graphics card is: ATI Radeon HD 5850 VaporX - 2 GB - 2xDVI/HDMI/DP (Sapphire) If the general opinion is that it is not a good graphics card, I am considering changing it for either the GTX470 or the 2gb ATI 5870. Also for information here is the rest of the system that I have ordered, partly with a view to playing BHAH at a better FPS and also with a view to newer games. 7. Hasse Wind, If I remember correctly from reading the book "King of 2 seaters" about the Brisfit, some squadrons did just that and added a lewis gun on a foster mounting, alongside the second lewis the observer had fitted as a field modification. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  8. For a detailed account of the life of the miners during WW1 read the book beneath flanders field, it goes into a great detail on everything including the different types of soil encountered, and includes many first hand accounts of what it was like. My favourite one has to be the miner who lost conciousness while using a rubber tube to breath through and his mate was unable to prise his mouth open to remove the tube so he could breath freely again, so he used a nearby crowbar to prise his mouth open, also removing 2 of his teeth in the process.
  9. I know it is mentioned in either flying fury or the biography of Gerald Constable-Maxwell that James McCudden and Gerald Constable-Maxwell while on home leave took turns flying the briston MC1 against an SE5A flown by the other and on each occasion the Bristol won, regardless of who was piloting it. This to me speaks volumes as it was able to beat one of the best british scouts of the period and as both of these pilots were in 56 squadron at the time I assume they both knew how to get the best out of the SE5A. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  10. MoMorgan, Just out of interest is your DVD drive an IDE one? The reason I ask is I have 2 DVD drives, 1 of which is an IDE DVD-Rom, and the other one is a SATA DVD +/- RW drive. I have problems with my IDE drive, it always gives me a cyclic redundancy error within the first 5% of installing, but my SATA drive works fine. Just interested. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  11. Actually the origins of football can be traced back to roman times when a game called harpastum, which featured carrying of the ball (pigs bladder), this then evolved into the medieval version of football, which then divided into football, rugby and a later version in america called american football, which is just a softer version of rugby. I can only sum the three versions up as the following. Football - played by pansies who go down at the slightest thing. American Football - again played by pansies, who only appear brave because of all the protective gear they wear. Rugby - played by real men, who have a fine disregard for their own safety. Or to use a famous phrase regarding Rugby, Football and Gaelic Football: In football you kick the ball In Gaelic football you kick the man if you cannot kick the ball In rugby you kick the ball if you cannot kick the man Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  12. UKW, I have just checked and the youngest allied casualty was John Condon who was aged 13 - I have attached the link to the brief article about him http://www.aftermathww1.com/johncondon.asp The oldest one who I also dug up while trying to find the yougest was H Webber who was 68. If anyone can provide information to prove me wrong please do. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  13. Flyby PC I know what you mean, he was the commentator I remember most, from watching my first England v Scotland game in 1987, and he is still in my opinion the best I have ever heard if a wee bit biased when it came to England (I am english, by the way). My dad used to enjoy his commentaries which says a lot as my dad is from Cumberland (or Cumbria as it is now), and he as I am sure you do knows all about the history of the Borders rivalry, sheep stealing and all that. I know he will be sorely missed by those rugby fans in the UK. If you go to www.planet-rugby.com onto the forums they have a topic devoted to Bill with a link to 4 mins of some of his best commentary, on the BBC Scotland website, some great memories and some even greater commentaries, well worth a look if you have not already seen it. RIP Bill you will be sadly missed Rugbyfan1972
  14. Vschoell, I am not sure on the propellor blades issue you are talking about, but the easiest way to tell the difference between the SE5 of which only 18 werre build according to the history of 56 in WW1 by Alex Revell is that the SE5 had rounded wingtips and the SE5a had the clipped wingtips. Wikipeadia has an informative page on both the SE5 and the SE5a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Aircraft_Factory_S.E.5 Thanks Rugbyfan
  15. A quick question, I have just been on Abebooks looking for Bomber Pilot (which I have just purchased in hardback for £11.25 including P&P). My question is what is on the dustjacket of the book as one of the cheaper copies had the warning "dustjacket raunchy", I have seen a photo of the cover and it shows biplanes (1 1/2 strutters I assume) diving, unless I have missed something that doesn't sound raunchy. I am just asking out of idle curiosity, to see if the bookseller is trying to make the book sound more appealing to some people. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  16. Olham, The Fokker DR1, is only the best known because MVR was killed while flying it, most people don't realise that he got most of his victories flying the various Albatross variants. Also the DR1 was a poor copy of the Sopwith Triplane iMO, but that is another debate. Thanks Fenwick
  17. More to the point does she know how much you have spent getting the perfect setup for this sim?
  18. This sounds great, although I would have preferred more planes that are not already in the sim to fill in the gaps in the present squadrons (the FE8 springs to mind). Hopefully the above issue will be fixed in the later addons. Also when is it being released? Thanks Rugbyfan
  19. Gordohk, If you have not already got them I would strongly recommend the other 2 books in the Hornets Sting trilogy, War Story which covers the period before Hornets Sting and Goshawk Squadron which covers the period after the Hornets Sting. The reason I have written it like that is that Goshawk Squadron was the first book in the trilogy that he wrote, but it covers the last period of the trilogy. Thanks Rugbyfan1972

  21. Uncleal, Yes I am looking to the future, particularly Deus Ex3 when it comes out as I think I may need a faster processor to get the most out of that game. Thanks Rugbyfan1972.
  22. Uncleal, Quick question are you using an Intel processor or an AMD one, the reason I ask is I am considering upgrading to an AMD quad core system and wondered if you (or anyone) knows if the AMD optimizer works for the quad core as well as the dual core. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  23. Uncleal, I have just flown a balloon defence mission where I have used the camel in the campaign, using auto rudder and I have shot down 2 AlbVa's and 2 Hannover's. Admittedly I did'nt realise I had invunerability switched off until I attacked the Hannovers, as the albs had not hit me once. I didn't find any problems using auto rudder and shot down 4 aircraft (2 albs and 2 hannovers), the third hannover would have been dead meat but for the fact that my guns and engine were damaged and I had to land at a nearby airfield. I find the auto rudder is preferable to the twisty stick rudder which I have on my Saitek Evo Forcefeedback. Also if you use a system (auto rudder) constantly you will discover what you can do with it, and adapt your tactics accordingly. Rugbyfan1972
  24. flynn, I know this is a bit off topic, but how about emailing The Aerodrome and letting them know the date of your great uncles death, as his date of death is blank in the profile. If you do not have an account for The Aerodrome, if you post the details on here I will let them know or one of the other members who frequents both forums may be able to inform them.. I did this once with Cyril Lowe (no relation) whose date of death is listed in a book I have listing all the english rugby internationals from 1871-1992. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  25. All, Thank you for your help, although rereading my post I should have been clearer,I have already looked at purchasing a 9800GT, only to discover that my machinesmotherboard only supports PCI-E version 1 whereas the 9800 is PCI-E 2, andwhile my machine will run that graphics card I will not get the full potentialout of it. That is the reason why I had decided to go the "whole hog" and buy anew machine or at least a new motherboard as I am led to believe that an AM3motherboard will not support my present CPU, which I already know is a dualcore one, I also had decided to buy the best I can in CPU to complement thegraphics card I intend buying. I am also looking to play modern games as well with Deus Ex 3 being high on mylist of priorities. My present Motherboard is a Gigabyte M61SME-S2L I could go with an AMD dual core running at 3.10Ghz, but as my present one isrunning at 3Ghz it seems a waste of money. Does anyone having viewed the above have any other recommendations/suggestions. Uncleal, thanks for the link to PC Wizard and the advice regarding vista. The i7 processors in England are not that cheap, the cheapest I can find frommy local computer shop is the Intel Core i7 920 (4 x 2.66Ghz) costing £274.95with the cheaper of the two motherboards being the Intel Core i7 920 (4 x2.66Ghz) costing £166.95, if I went for the 2nd of the 3 i7 CPUs IntelCore i7 920 (4 x 2.66Ghz) it would cost me £520.95 the most expensive i7 the IntelCore i7 Extreme Ed' 975 (4 x 3.33Ghz) costs £929.95 which is more than the systemthat I had listed in my first post costs in total.
