  1. There is a difference between "paper" performance and "real" performance. The question is wheter a pilot can fly his plane till to the edge or not. An example from WW2. The FW-190 had a much better "paper" performance than the Me-109. But the pilots felt more comfortable with the 109. They knew how far they could drive the plane. They got warnings from the 109 before it became a beast etc, while the 190 became beasty without warnings. An other example. MiG-15. Its a fact that the MiG-15 was more agile than the Sabre. But the MiG had the tendency to become beasty at high speeds at high altitudes. So only experienced pilots could drive it to the edge. The same with the MiG-23 or the Fokker DR1 in WW1. In the hand of an outstanding pilot it were outstanding planes, but underperformer in the hands of an average pilot. So i see the F-8 vs F-4. The Phantom was the more "comfortable feeling" plane for the pilot.
  2. It simply shows us how democratic the so called Democrats in eastern europe really are. They should never become members of the EU!
  3. [Flare_Station] SystemType=DECOY_DISPENSER EjectPosition= 0.06,-3.64,1.02 EjectVelocity= -15.0,0.0,0.5 NumFlare=5 This are the lines for a upward firing flare as i used it in my MiG-23PFM. To get a 45° shot you must play only with a EjectVelocity data.
  4. The big advantage of the F-4 was its outstanding range and the multitask capability. A F-4 driver could act as bomber or Flak suppresser in a normal combat mission (what meant in Vietnam, that no MiG's were in the air), but if the MiG's came to play catch me if you can, then the F-4 could drop the bombs and could switch to fighter role. The Crusader was unable to do this. The F-8 was a pure fighter in Vietnam, so that in most cases the flighttime and fuel were wasted, because no MiG's came. And because Lexx qouted George Spangenberg with his words about the Israelis, i want to quote the israeli Test pilot who testet the MiG-21F13 1966. He said: With this bird we would have had shot down much more Arabs than with the planes we had.
  6. Mi-24. The Crocodile is the greatest (not the best).
  7. There is a german language book about this subject. Olaf Groehler "Selbstmörderische Allianz" I dont know wheter it is translated into other languages. The subject are the secret german training facilities in the USSR. Pilot training at Lipetsk, Tank crew traing at Kasan, Chemical warfare training at .... i have forgotten it. It is also a fact, that Reichswehr and Red Army had close relationships. German officers were very wellcome visitors at the soviet autumn maneuver excercises. There they learned a new way of warefare, the fast and deep attack operation with motorized units. This was the startpoint of the development of the Blitzkrieg strategy.
  8. Its a pity to hear that. To close such a museum is a sad thing. I remember that there was, ages ago, a french movie about Normandie-Njemen. Was a great movie.
  9. Nice ship. By the way. The brits were unable to sink the Bismarck. The crew of this ship sunk it themself.

    is this for real

    No its a Super JJ-7
  11. Nice to see that this old terrain is still alive. I must agree to Wrench. Making atolls is a nightmare My first idea was simply to take satellite pictures and make them into 2km tiles. But the atoll was to big, so i would have a very big number of tiles with 95% water and the rest soil. So i decided to cheaten a little bit and make the atoll at it is.
  12. Reminds me on the bad old days when i had to run in the "Gamma suit" Is not a nice thing if you have an urgend need
  13. In german news TV N24 it was said, that they found glas fragments of vulcano ashes in the engine of american military planes which flow yesterday through the ahes cloud over Europe.

    Runway 36

00 you can read in some contries at the doors of the WC. "Hey can we land at runway 00? We have an urgent need!!!"

Its all statistics. With statistics you can do everything. Or how Churchill said: "I trust only the statistic that i have forged myself." It is not important who has the fewest losses. The result is important. And so you sadly must say: Iraq was a defeat and in Afghanistan we are on a good way to the next defeat. With the use of high tech weapons you can conquer, you can win a open ground battle. This are the strong points of US military and and the other western armies. But to hold a territory you finally need the man with the rifle in the hand. And this man is unfortunatly vulnerable. The reduce the own losses the US sent to less troops in the Iraq and the western community has today to less troops in Afghanistan. Only a comparision. In the german sector we have 4500 german troops, plus some swedish, some hungarian, some latvian etc, lets say 5.000 men. The sector has the size of half Germany. After WW2 the allied forces (US, british, soviet, french) had 2 - 3 million troops to cover Germany and supress the Nazis. Imagine what would have happen if in 1945 only 5.000 or 10.000 men would have tried to cover Germany. I think the Nazis would have come back very fast. Same thing in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  16. Empty mass is the mass of a plane without fuel, oil, weapons, ammo, pods and pilot.
  17. I dont know very much about the US system. But perhaps a short view to the TP-23 of the MiG-23MF. It had a scanarea of +/-30° horizinal and +2/-13° vertical. The maximum detection range of a bomber size target (16 square meters) was 35 km under good weather conditions. A range measurement was impossible. The system was intended for a "silent" intercept of incoming bombers. The MiG-23 should have directed toward the target by ground controllers, then the MiG should accelearate to come in shooting position and fire. the advantage of this way of interception was, that the intercepted enemy would have no warning by RWR until the missile is launched. For offensive fighter operations a IRST is not really usefull. The F-4 main objective was rather offensive then defensive, thatswhy the IRST system was not so important for the Phantom.
  18. Now the number of dead german soldiers is 43.
  19. Norway is closed, Danmark is closed, parts of Sweden are closed, UK is closed. And only because a vulcano is heating a little bit
  20. Heute verloren wir wieder 4 unserer Jungs. Nun sind es 43 die in Afghanistan ihr Leben verloren. Link zur Meldung im Spiegel
  21. I think he means the one i made for DRV terrain ages ago. In the last version of this terrain it is included and there was a seperate download for the railwaystation in the download section. http://forum.combatace.com/files/file/1043-railwaystation/
  22. I prefer the Near East conflict. Israels wars from 1956 to 1973. I think that the modern times avionics cant be handled well by the TK'games. For instance i miss the "silent shot" capibility of the modern soviet fighters or the multiple target capability of modern radar systems. Thatswhy nearly never past 1980.
  23. I dont believe that is was a crash caused by the plane. The Tu-154 is a safe bird and the polish technicians and pilots are well trained and know their job. Their planes are safe. The accident is a sad and strange thing. Whats is know? What are hard facts? Point 1. The plane crashed and killed all people aboard. Point 2. The Smolensk airfield was covered by fog. Point 3. The pilot of the plane was a very skilled, high professional flyer. Point 4. The tower said, that landing at the Smolensk airfield was not safe and it would be better to go to Minsk or Moscow airfields Point 5. The pilot made 4 attempts to land. Point 6. The last attempt failed. On the first view a typical pilot error. But, its also known that on a travel to Georgia (The land in caucasus, not the US state) the polish president Kwashnewski had some times ago said to one of the pilots of the government plane that he made a insubordination if he wont land at a fog covered airfield. The president forced the pilot to land at Tiflis airport, while Tiflis airport was covered by fog. ... With this in mind .... I ask me what i would do in the situation of the pilot of the polish plane. Would i land under such no go conditions? Would i have the bravery to say "No Sir!"to the heads of government and military? Would i resist against the urges of the "big bosses" and risk my career? I dont know.
  24. Its said that is was a pilot error. 4 landing attempts for a airfield covered by fog. Why he does not went to Minsk or Moscow airfields? Who decided to land at Smolensk? A lot of questions.
