    Royal New Zealand Air Force 'what should have been' F-16 Pack for Strike Fighters 2

    This pack represents 'what should have been' if our newly elected Labour Party government hadn't screwed the nation and cacelled the previous governments planed purchase of F-16C fighters in 2001. They would latter axe our Air Force’s entire combat air wing and we are defenceless to this day.

    Features:

    -Multiple year specific versions with different load outs for the ´C´ model F-16 which has been renamed the F-16K.

    -A two seater F-16K/D with conformal fuel tanks.

  4. F-4 Phantom II in Royal New Zealand Air Force service ('What If')

    F-4 Phantom II in Royal New Zealand Air Force service ('What If')

    Background (factual):

    In mid 1964 Operational Requirement No. 5/Air called for a tactical combat aircraft to replace the Canberra. Specifically a long range aircraft with the primary role of counter-air/interdiction and secondary roles of close air support and air defense.

    In June 1965 The Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) Morrison was quoted as wanting 18 F-111 aircraft for the RNZAF at a cost of £1.5 million per aircraft. The public and media supported the idea but the Chief of Defense Staff (who was a Naval Officer) and the acting Prime Minister publicly opposed the purchase.

    In August 1965 the Chiefs of Staff Committee rejected the idea of acquiring long-range interdiction aircraft and in September agreed that close air support should be the primary role of the new combat aircraft.

    In December came Air Staff Requirement No. 12 with the following requirements of the new combat aircraft:

    - Ability to provide effective air support to ground forces.
    - Highly reliable and robust
    - Self defense capability to evade or counter supersonic interceptors and surface-to-air missiles.
    - Long range.
    - Ability to operate closely with American and Australian forces.

    By May 1966 the RNZAF had finished evaluating six candidate aircraft:

    - F-4C Phantom II
    - A-7A Corsair II
    - Mirage IIIO
    - F-5A Freedom Fighter
    - F-104G Starfighter
    - A-4E Skyhawk

    In August 1966 the RNZAF officially asked the government to purchase 16 F-4 Phantoms at a total cost of £19 million.

    Now remember AVM Morrison making it known he wanted the F-111? He would later go on to admit he never wanted the F-111 he had wanted the F-4 all along but given the cost of the F-4 he wanted to make it look more attractive (cost wise) by putting it next to the F-111.

    The minister of Defense then announced the final stage of the evaluation had been reached and a decision was a few weeks away. The purchase of the F-4 seemed to be all but done...

    BUT the Treasury department now intervened and recommended purchasing the F-5! The RNZAF High Command was furious! But ultimately powerless to halt the path to purchasing the A-4 Skyhwak that had just begun.

    Over the next year the RNZAF, Cabinet Defense Committee, Treasury, the Finance Minister and the Chief of Defense wrangled over purchasing the F-4 or an alternative (F-5 or A-4). Then at the end of 1967 the New Zealand Currency was devalued and a squadron of F-4 Phantoms was now instantly out of New Zealand’s price range. It was either 11 Phantoms or 16 Skyhawks. So the Skyhawk it was.

    So if the Treasury Department hadn't intervened in the procurement process towards the end of 1966 it seems entirely likely that New Zealand would have placed and order for the F-4 Phantom II at the end of that year!

    And so I give you the F-4D Phantom II in RNZAF Service 1969 to 2002.

    I chose the F-4D as when the order would have likely been placed in late 1966/ early 1967 the F-4D was the current USAF production model as the first of the F-4E models were only just being built as part of the USAF F-4D contract.

    The RNZAF F-4D models are built to the same standard as the last USAF F-4D coming off the production line in the late 60's. However like the A-4K in real life they are 'fitted for but not with' ECM/ RHAW equipment. This means the wiring, sensors and cockpit RHAW display are installed but the actual 'black box' control units are not.

    The reason for this (as in real life with the A-4K) was not an economy measure as most references state (including the Third Wire manual) but because the equipment was in such demand by US forces for use in Vietnam. So the aircraft were delivered without them but with the intention of fitting them at a latter date. However that day simply never came and this is possibly where the additional cost of purchasing/ installing them played a part in it not happening.

    The Kiwi F-4D Phantoms are capable of caring the full range of the USAF Phantom arsenal including first generation smart weapons. However only the Mk 82/83/84 series bombs and unguided rockets are used by the RNZAF. For the air-to-air role the SUU-23/A gunpod, AIM-7E and AIM-9E are chosen with the AIM-4 Falcons performance in Vietnam causing the RNZAF to steer well clear of it.

    Four separate Aircraft:

    F-4D Phantom II RNZAF - Initial aircraft delivered in 1969 fitted for but not with ECM/ RHAW equipment.

    F-4D Phantom II (72) RNZAF - By 1973 the redundant RHAW display has been removed from the cockpit as well as the empty IRST pod under the nose that was to house the RHAW gear.

    F-4D Phantom II (78) RNZAF - Second hand attrition aircraft from USAF stocks delivered in 1985 in preparation for the project Kahu upgrade of the fleet.

    F-4D Phantom II (88) Kahu RNZAF - In 1986 a comprehensive $140 million upgrade program is undertaken. Known as project 'Kahu' the heart of the upgrade is replacing the old AN/APG-109 radar with the modern AN/APG-66(NZ) multi-mode radar. The cockpit is modernized with glass displays, HOTAS and a Ferranti wide-angle HUD. Survivability in increased with the ALR-66 RWR and ALE-40 countermeasure dispensers. The MIL-STD 1553B databus and Litton Industries LN-93 inertial navigation system are also installed. The airframes and engines are completely stripped down and given a life extension with almost all of the aircraft wiring replaced. A smoke abatement system is added along with low voltage formation lights.

    The aircraft also receive armament upgrades including the capability to fire AIM-9L, AIM-7M, AGM-65B/G and GBU-10 Paveway II laser-guided bombs. The old F-4 Phantom external center drop tanks are also replaced by the F-15 600 gallon HPC tanks as on USAF Phantoms. By the end of 1991 all New Zealand and ex USAF Phantoms have been upgraded to the 'Kahu' standard.

  5. McDonnell Douglas Eagle F.1 - RAF ('what if')

    McDonnell Douglas Eagle F.1 - RAF ('what if')

    With delays in the Tornado ADV program the RAF desperately needs to replace its aging and out classed air defense Phantom and Lightning squadrons. As a stop gap measure the RAF lease squadrons of F-15A Eagles from the USAF. They are modified to fire Skyflash missiles and given the name 'Eagle F.1' in RAF service.

    Mod uses stock TW RAF F-4M decals for squadron markings so you can select other squadrons.

  6. F-101 Voodoo Escort Fighter, as it was meant to be.

    F-101 Voodoo Escort Fighter, as it was meant to be.
    Before the F-101 Voodoo suffered from 'mission creep and bloat' turning it into a (failed) nuclear strike fighter it was meant to purely be an escort fighter to protect Strategic Air Command's bombers. Before the name change to F-101 it was designated the F-88K Voodoo. Those original F-88K specifications made no mention of any air-to-ground role ("not a pound for air-to-ground!") and included an armament of three AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles employed by the MA-7 fire control system with APG-37 air-to air-radar, full 7.3 G capability and K-19 gunsight (as on the F-105).
    Features:
    F-101A Voodoo Escort Fighter:
    - Full 7.33 G.
    - Reduced the effect/ impact of  the stall/ spin when you pull up suddenly in the FM.
    - MA-7 FCS with AN/APG-37 Radar, 30nm range.
    - LABS/ bombing control system removed from cockpit and replaced with MA-7/ Missile control system.
    - K-19 Gunsight system (as on F-105).
    - 3x Semi-recessed AIM-4 Falcon Missile stations.
    - “Not a pound for air-to-ground!”
    - 1957 Service entry.
    F-101C Voodoo Escort Fighter:
    - As above plus:
    - Upgraded Pratt & Whitney J57-P-413 engines delivering 11,628 lb dry and 17,100 lb afterburning.
    - Upgraded AN/APG-125 Radar, 60nm range
    - (X)AIM-4H Falcon missiles with proximity fuse and enhanced manoeuvrability (1971).
    - 1966 Service entry.
    The stock TW AIM-4D Falcon has had its performance data dumbed down in order (I presume) to represent its poor performance when used by the F-4D Phantom in the game. However the reason the Falcon missile performed so badly when used by the F-4D was more to do with it being used outside its engagement parameters and the complex/ lengthy manual firing process the F-4D could only used. When used as designed by the fire control computer (FCS) of the F-102A/ F-106A and fired within its parameters (the FCS  assisted the pilot with this) the Falcon was as effective as any other missile system of the era. In fact the IR seeker of the AIM-4D/ AIM-4G was the best on any IR missile until the AIM-9L was developed. As such I have corrected the data for all the Falcon missiles.

  7. VA-34 A-4B Skyhawk Bay of Pigs

    During the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion VA-34 A-4B Skyhaks from the USS Essex flew a CAP/ escort mission with the intention of protecting the Rebal A-26 Invaders but due to a timing cock up were an hour late and missed engaging the Cuban T-33A fighters.  They also flew multiple reconnaissance flights over the invasion beach throughout the incident. Due to President Kennedy insisting that there be no proof of US involvement the Skyhawks had their USN markings painted over. There are no photos of these aircraft and very few of VA-34 during that time period so I have based these skins off the only photo I can find specifically of VA-34 during the Bay of Pigs Invasion as well as one from later that year. These photos are of aircraft that did not have their markings painted over however. There is an alternative skin based on a drawing Statos posted which I think makes a way cooler looking Aircraft but is unlikely to be historically accurate.
    Credit goes to TW, Stratos and Nyghtfall.
    If you do create a Bay of Pigs USN A-4B v FAR T-33A remember the A-4B could not carry the AIM-9 at this point and Skyhawks operating over Cuba just had two wing drop tanks plus thier 20mm cannons. Change the Aircraft role from 'attack' to 'fighter' in the A-4B_data.ini file if you want better AI performance from your wingmen.

  8. Mirage III & Nesher Gun Sight Fix.

    Mirage III and Nesher Gun Sight Fix.
    This mod corrects the Stock Third Wire Gun Sights for the Mirage IIICJ Shahak, Mirage IIICJ Shahak (71), Nesher and as a bonus the DLC 17 RAAF Mirage fighters.
    I recently read the Osprey book Israeli 'Mirage and Nesher Aces' and 'Mirage III vs Mig-21 Six Day War 1967.' Both books are full of gun camera images of Israeli Mirage IIICJ and Nesher fighters killing MIGs.
    From these I realised Third Wire has made an error on all the Mirage gun sights by aligning the (horizontally elongated) aircraft reference cross with the gun bore-sight and thus the gun piper. In the Nesher and Mirage IIIO that leaves the actual gun bore-sight cross sitting above the gun piper doing nothing.
    This mod corrects the position and alignment of the aircraft reference cross, gun piper and gun bore-sight cross (Nesher and Mirage IIIO).
    This correction should be applied to any other version of Mirage III, Mirage 5, Nesher or Dagger you have that uses a Third Wire Mirage cockpit and/ or Mirage gun sight.
    CombatAce fair use agreement applies.
    Cheers,
    Dan.

  9. TW EE Lightning (All) Gunsight corrections

    After michaelk's F.1 Cockpit Tweak uploaded recently I realised I never released my TW EE Lightning Gunsight corrections from 2020! So here you are:
    So after reading the pilots notes for the F.1, F.2A and F.6 and looking at gunsight camera pictures it turns out the gun sights and event markers are all based off the Lightning F.53
    So here they are corrected:
    - F.1, F.1A, F.2, F.2A fitted with "Pilot Attack Sight"
    - F.3 fitted with "Light Fighter Sight Type 2 Mk. 2"
    - F.6  fitted with "Light Fighter Sight Type 2 Mk. 3"
    To Install simply un-pack and drop into the 'objects' folder in your main mods folder.

  10. Falklands Mod HMS Ark Royal ‘what if’ campaign

    SF2 Falklands Mod HMS Ark Royal ‘what if’ campaign 1.0

    This package contains everything you need for an Operation Corporate campaign that uses the HMS Ark Royal with her F-4K Phantom FG.1 and Buccaneer S.2D airwing as if they were all still in service for the 1982 Falklands war.
    It works solely with the updated version of Kesselbrut's "Falklands '82" (Operation Corporate) mod package for Strike Fighters 2 (SF2) uploaded by Dave https://combatace.com/files/file/11627-sf2-falklands-mod/
    In this ‘what if’ scenario the Royal Navy Invincible class carriers have been delayed entering service requiring the HMS Ark Royal to remain active along with her FAA aircraft into the early 1980’s. As such the HMS Ark Royal leads the Royal Navy Task Force to recapture the Falkland Islands. The HMS Hermes serves as her sister carrier in the Task Force operating Sea Harriers and RAF Harriers. However the size and role of her Sea Harrier airwing is more reflective of the ships role as an ASW/ Commando Carrier as it was when the HMS Ark Royal was still active in real life. Meaning the bulk of the air war will be fought by the Phantoms and Buccaneers from the Ark Royal.
    The F-4K Phantom (75) are as they were at the end of Royal Navy service but with the addition of Skyflash and G model Sidewinder missiles (RN Phantoms only ever carried the D). One would assume they would have received these alongside the RAF FG.1/ FGR.2 Phantoms had they remained in service with the Navy after 1978. AIM-9L Sidewinders are also available for the Operation as they were for the Sea Harriers in real life. I have also made the SUU-23/A available but it is not used in any loadouts as it was only integrated onto the FG.1 after they were handed over to the RAF and upgraded with lead computing gunsights. The HEI rounds do not have tracers.
    The Buccaneer S.2D is also as it was at the end of Royal Navy service but with the ECM pods carried by the RAF Buccaneer force in 1982 and the ability to carry the Pave Spike pod. As I imagine these capabilities would have been transferred over from the RAF Buccaneers if this ‘what if’ had scenario had occurred. As well as using the G model Sidewinders of the Phantoms.
    Both aircraft have a big single shot of Chaff simulating how they loaded it inside the airbrakes of aircraft without dispensers in that era.

    Installation:

    In addition to the requirements for SF2 Falklands Mod 2.0 you will need Strike Fighters 2: Vietnam (SF2V) for the F-4K cockpit as the F-4J cockpit is more accurate for a Royal Navy F-4K than the Third Wire DLC F-4K cockpit or Third Wire F-4M cockpit.

    STEP 1:

    If you don’t already have a working version of the SF2 Falklands Mod 2.0 download and install it by following the instructions here

    This mod requires a separate Mod Folder from the StrikeFighters2_Falklands Mod Folder you already have or created in step 1.

    - Open your SF2 Installation directory and make a copy of the StrikeFighters2_Falklands.exe you already have, Rename the copy to StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal.exe

    - Run the newly copied and renamed StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal.exe file, then exit back out to the Windows desktop after navigating through a few menus. A custom Mod Folder for your Falklands'82 Ark Royal mod install will have been created in the same location as your StrikeFighters2_Falklands Mod Folder you already have.

    - Open your Mod Folder named StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal and delete the \Objects sub-directory (including everything in it).

    STEP 3: INSTALL MAIN COMPONENTS TO MOD FOLDER

    - Copy and paste everything from your StrikeFighters2_Falklands Mod Folder you already had into the StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal Mod Folder you just created in step 2 EXCEPT the Options.INI file and the Version.INI file.

    - Unpack the SF2_Falklands82ArkRoyal.7z archive package to a location on your hard drive.

    - Move the contents of the \To_Mod_Folder directory to your StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal Mod Folder (created in Step 2 above) YOU MUST OVERIDE WHEN ASKED!

    STEP 4: EDIT OPTIONS.INI

    Open the Options.INI in your StrikeFighters2_Falklands_ArkRoyal Mod Folder. Locate the "Instant Action" section and replace it with the following:

    [instantAction]
    AircraftType=F-4K_75
    MissionMap=Malvinas
    StartTime=15:15:00
    StartDate=05/21/1982
    StartTimeDeviation=10
    TextureSet=0
    NationalMarking=0
    SquadronMarking=0
    AircraftNumber=0
    KillMarking=0

    Just below the "Instant Action" section is the "Single Mission" section. At minimum you should change the EndYear= statement to 1983 or higher. I recommend setting the StartYear= and EndYear= as follows:

    StartYear=1982
    EndYear=1983

    Save your changes and close the Options.INI file.

    THAT'S IT. Your "Falklands'82 Ark Royal for SF2" mod should now be ready to use.
