KAW FM Updates
baffmeister replied to baffmeister's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
Grumman F9F-2 Panther FM beta 0.90 attached. This is for the very nice Bobrock/Wrench package available here:http://combatace.com/files/file/13412-sf2-korean-war-era-f9f-2-panther-pak-by-bobrock/ I didn't find much free information on the internet regarding handling characteristics and limitations so the FM is a bit generic. At some point I will probably have to purchase a flight manual to make any improvements. I had some issues with the retractable tail skid causing major airframe damage if it contacted the ground. The skid works OK now but the animation behavior isn't 100% correct. The FM uses some KAW specific damage modeling and AI behavior so may not be compatible with other installations. Here's the FM: KAW_F9F-2_FM_0.90.zip -

draging

Good to hear from you Daniel! -
I have very limited experience with carrier birds but have noticed the requirement for the previously mentioned hook angle adjustment for some planes. Carrier aircraft also seem to like very slow approach speeds with lots of drag so you could try increasing the flap and gear drag while decreasing the stall and landing speeds a bit. Doing so will probably generate a more stable approach.

After working on the Battle of Britain FM's for over a year it is time for the RAF to get offensive! The attached package contains some simple FM updates that allow the Mk2 Spits and Hurris to conduct missions across the English Channel. Also included are the BF-109E-7 with the "N" engine and the BF-109E-4B[Late]. My original plan for the E-7 was to use the Wrench/RussoUK Jabo package with my E-7 FM but there are some considerable differences between the E-3/E-4 models I've been using and the E-7 model in the Jabo package so to save a lot of time I am still using the E-4 model. On the plus side, I found the ETC50 MER in the Wrench/Russo package and the Jabo skin works with the E-4 lod so I am making use of those items. The Jabo skin required some edits to the decal ini due to some differences in the model centers so I have included that. To get the ETC50 and Jabo skin go here: http://combatace.com/files/file/13997-sf2-ww2-eto-bf-109e-7-jabo-by-russouk/ Attached is the " ETO_Flight Models-1941-Beta 0.95 Pack1." ETO_FM-1941-0.95P1.zip The installation instructions are based on having the BoB beta 0.95 package installed.

After scattering BoB FM's all over the WW2 forum, here are the latest updates all in one place! The install instructions are a bit convoluted and may not be the best way to do it but for experienced SF-2 players it shouldn't be that difficult to get things working. Some aircraft are "A Team" models so you will require access to that site to install the entire package. Required files available at CombatAce: http://combatace.com/files/file/13646-sf2-ww2-hawker-hurricane-ia-etobob-by-raven/ http://combatace.com/files/file/13510-sf2-ww2-spitfire-mk1a-by-mod-mafiatmf/ http://combatace.com/files/file/13826-pasko-ju-87b-r-sf2-update-eto/ http://combatace.com/files/file/13938-sf2-ww2-eto-boulton-paul-defiant-remod-pak/ http://combatace.com/files/file/13795-sf2-ww2-raf-bombers-pak/ http://combatace.com/files/file/14020-bf109e-3/ http://combatace.com/files/file/14035-bf109e-47z/ http://combatace.com/files/file/13952-sf2-ww2-eto-bristol-blenheim-mkiv-skin-pak/ Required aircraft from the "A Team" site: Do-17Z He-111H6 Ju-88A4 Blenhiem IV BF-110C OVERVIEW: This project was started so I could develop a standardized approach to building WW2 FM's. It has taken much longer than expected but I like the results so plan to put together some other WW2 FM Packs in the future. Next projects will be some post BoB FM's covering the 1941 time frame and some Battle of France FM's. This package is intended for experienced SF-2 users. The installation instructions are contained in the assorted parts folders. NOTES: After a year and a half in developement, this project remains a bit of an experiment. Most of the time has been spent on the fighter aircraft flight models, trying to get realistic speeds, roll rates and turn rates. They aren't Hi-Fi but hopefully are somewhat representative. Details below: FIGHTER FLIGHT MODELS: The Spitfire and BF-109 FMs are ThirdWire based but, besides new engine tables, have had lots of adjustments to get the desired performance of the early versions. The Hurricane and BF-110 FM's are updates of the original freeware versions but with new engine tables, CDL tables, and some assorted ThirdWire tables. The fighter aircraft, including the Defiant, can be belly landed. BOMBER FLIGHT MODELS: The bomber FM's are a bit "Generic" using some elements of ThirdWires C-47 FM. They do get dedicated engine tables and drag adjustments to generate realistic speeds. Most of the time spent on them was adjusting collision points and min/max extents for fuel tanks etc. [important for damage modeling.] DAMAGE MODELING: Quite a bit of time spent on this subject. Guns: The Browning machine guns are a bit light on hitting power compared to the Luftwaffe cannon so I have increased the accuracy and burst length [pilot AI data] to compensate. I think this is a realistic approach and will be used for any future machine gun only WW2 aircraft FMs I do. Armor Protection: For pilot protection I am just following general practice for the time period and is not aircraft specific. Even the early Spits and Hurris with no armor get some to represent structure and equipment that was sometimes placed to protect the pilots. Also, all aircraft get some armor as structure to offer some protection to engine, fuel tanks etc. Radial engined aircraft get a little more armor around the engine to represent their capacity to run with more damage. Component Damage Rating: With a few exceptions, the DAMAGERATING= entry for the various components has been set to DISABLED. This can lead to some very long but interesting crash sequences as the AI will continue to try and fly the aircraft even with fatal damage. Keep this in mind when reviewing the de-brief screen. Bomber Gunners: To compensate for the AI's lack of imagination when attacking bombers, I have considerably reduced the accuracy of the bomber gunners. Also, where one gunner is operating more than one gun position, [common on some Luftwaffe bombers] the chance of firing has been reduced accordingly. A.I. DATA: Some changes from previous versions to reduce crashes and improve both offensive and defensive capabilities. Other Changes: On previous uploads I used the [early] designation for the Spitfire 1a and Hurricane 1a versions with 6lb boost but that is no longer the case. The previous early versions are now just called Spit_Mk1A and Hurricane1A. The previously released N powered BF-109E7 will be included in a future post BoB pack. Raven has an updated Hurricane 1A model available but I haven't had a chance to introduce it into this package yet. It will get done at some point. Here's the package: BoB FM Pack0.95.zip

KAW FM Updates

I plan to have a look at that one at some point but haven't found much detailed info on the internet. In RL the La-11 would probably have been a formidable adversary in the right hands! -

Not enough spare time! All I have going for WW2 is an ETO Battle of Britain install. The SF2 NA title adds a lot to the game but I haven't really made use of it beyond a quick check out. Probably time to do a PTO install to at least get my feet "wet". -

KAW FM Updates
baffmeister replied to baffmeister's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
KAW P-51D FM update attached. [ Got side tracked. The Panther FM hasn't even been started yet!] This P-51D FM is for use with Wrenchs' KAW P-51D pack that you can get here: http://combatace.com/topic/75103-sf2-korean-war-era-p-51d-mustangs/ NOTES: The stock TW P-51D FM seems to underperform quite a bit so this FM has been adjusted to get the desired performance. [desired by me, at least.] The main performance changes are due to adjustments to the inner wing CDL headline number and a minor edit to the CDL table. Also, some additional changes to the rudder data and engine table. The P-51 holds lots of internal fuel so to maintain good performance you should limit the fuel load on short range missions. Other changes: The MaxSpeedSL= has been adjusted to 505MPH. This was the Mustang redline indicated airspeed below 9000ft and is a bit of an experiment. I usually set the MaxSpeedSL to about 10MPH above the book number while tuning the top speed at sea level with edits to the overall CD0. In this case I want to see if the "simplified" AI flight engine will keep the max LEVEL SL speed within the same range as the player aircraft. So far, so good. I think the game flight engine limits the AI speeds to the MaxSpeedSL entry or the MachLimit entry [0.77 Mach for the P-51], which ever comes first. By raising the the MaxSpeedSL entry to the redline speed I hope to get more realistic AI behavior. If this approach works it should make for more interesting dogfights. [Thinking WW2 here!] I have also included some info on KAW aircraft war service dates. Previously, I had the dates in the FM data for optional use but it is probably better to use these dates just for Campaign or Single Missions. I plan to keep updating this file as I do more KAW FM's. The dates may be of some help to Campaign/Mission builders but the research is "Internet Quality". Here's the P-51D FM: KAW P-51D_0.99.zip -
After playing around with the MiG-25RB [classed as a BOMBER] for God knows how many hours, I threw up my hands in despair. It seems you can adjust the bombing altitude by adjusting some level bomb AI data but the accuracy for dumb bombs is very hard coded. I had the MiG-25RB level bombing from 42000ft but when giving the "Attack my Target" command the AI free fall bombs would land about 3-4 Km from the target. I think for aircraft classed as BOMBERS, the game engine for bomb accuracy is coded for large formations and the formation tends to "walk" the "dumb" bombs in from a considerable distance from the target. Probably worth pointing out, I even experimented with differerent glide ratios for the free fall bombs but it had no effect. I suspect the MiG-25RB in real life would work in single or small groups dropping bombs at high speed and high altitude so I made an attempt to replicate that in Paulo's recent upload but had no success. [ I think the RB used pre computed INS [for the target coordinates] and doppler radar [to compute wind drift] for strikes against relatively large but high priority targets. [ Regarding accurracy, think dropping free fall bombs within airport boundarys] Also worth mentioning, I equipped the MiG-25RB to carry LGB's and, when classed as BOMBERS, and using the revised high altitude LevelBomb AI, my wingmen did, in fact, hit the target. This would seem to be contrary to some previous posts I have read on the topic. [bOMBERS using smart bombs. Maybe something got changed with SF-2NA?] Anyway, for B-52's, for those who like to experiment, I would suggest adjusting the LevelBomb AI data like so: [LevelBombAI] ReleaseAlt=12801.6//9144.0 ReleaseCount=24 ReleaseInterval=0.1 This will raise the level bomb AI from 30000ft to 42000ft. I have no idea if they can actually hit a target from that altitude. The B-52 data.ini can be extracted from ObjectData012. P.S. Don't EVER forget what Wrench said about BOMBER aircraft!

P-51s
baffmeister replied to TheWarrior's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
The 505 MPH is the redline indicated airspeed for the P-51D. [ found on the internet] The present drag on the FM won't allow it to go that fast during level flight at sea level but should be attainable during dives. During my rather informal tests I was getting about 370 MPH with WEP at sea level. [75% fuel, clean.] I haven't run any speed tests at altitude yet but assuming the ThirdWire engine table is OK the speeds should be reasonably close. I guess one thing to watch for is if the AI aircraft show any signs of unrealistic speeds at low altitude. My understanding is the AI uses a simplified flight model so there is some potential for issues. -
P-51s
baffmeister replied to TheWarrior's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
A very quick FM update for ThirdWires P-51D attached. For WW2 use it will require some edits to the date range etc. I decided to try and reverse engineer a "fix" to try and get performance closer to book numbers. My suspicions about this FM always centered on the very high CDL number for the inner wing section so I have messed with that to try and generate sea level speeds closer to what is published. [ around 375mph at sea level with WEP] Some other changes made including rudder edits. When I adapted the ThirdWire Spitfire IX and S-99/199 FM's for WW2 use they seemed to work very well. With new engine tables and some minor edits I had no particular problems matching performance numbers for the Spitfire 1a and BF-109E's. The P-51D is way more difficult so I think a "mistake" was made in the FM. Anyway, I plan to do some more work on the P-51D for KAW use but for now here is an early beta tester. P-51D_FM0.90.zip -
P-51s
baffmeister replied to TheWarrior's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
I always thought the TW P-51 was too sluggish as well but don't forget, it carrys a LOT of fuel so if you are in the habit of using the "Alt N" function you may want to consider loading only 50% fuel + drop tanks prior to departure. I recall testing the AvHistory P-51 FM and it seemed to have much better performance. It would be interesting to try and port that FM over to the TW model but those AvHistory FM's are VERY complicated and I don't think it would be a simple task. May give it a shot at some point. -
KAW FM Updates
baffmeister replied to baffmeister's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
Here is a KAW specific update for Paulopanz's recently updated Sea Fury package available here: http://combatace.com/files/file/13443-hawker-sea-fury-fb11-mk-50/ This update has some KAW specific damage modeling and AI changes. I have also included some Sea Fury 45 imp gallon drop tanks if you haven't downloaded the latest version yet. Paulopanz and company did a great job updating the very old model but it still has some issues. The weapon stations are poorly positioned and the ailerons will self center when doing left turns. I am a bit undecided how to classify the prop planes for KAW use. I have this one classified as FIGHTER but for air to air use the only option is CAP and INTERCEPT which I think they would have been assigned if required. The Sea Fury was a very versatile airplane and could carry removeable cameras in the rear fuselage so the RECON statement is legit. For KAW use there is an option to edit the date range so it won't be available until it actually came into service during the Korean war. The dates are to the nearest month and the research is a bit "light." This date range option was included in the F-80C update as well if you wish to do the edit. The F-80C was removed from Korean war use a couple of months before wars end. I did some carrier trials with this FM and it seems OK. When on autopilot the player aircraft traps OK and when player flown it's not too difficult. With the current patch the AI only aircraft are removed from the game as they approach the aircraft carrier landing pattern. I did notice some potential conflicts with parked aircraft so have included some revised data.inis for the aircraft carriers Collosus and Illustrious. Here's the update pack: KAW SeaFury 0.99.zip -

Hurricane Update FYI
baffmeister replied to RAVEN's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
Thanks for the heads up. I hope to put together a BoB FM pack in a month or so and will include a "kit" for the updated Hurricane 1A but not sure if there will be many skins available to go with it. If thats the case I will also include a kit for Wrenchs' Hurricane 1A SF2 package.
