  1. I don't agree with the Forever War, but if ya gonna do it, this is the way. Ghurkas
  2. Start:: oooo what popped into my mind was that movie, forgot which, but Harrison Ford and the maths teacher wife. Do your maths fellas!!
  3. There's alot to whine about with TK's AI, but I always remember the terrain avoidance ability here. Recall FB Maddox AI could not handle terrain elevation, and it crippled the releace of PF on that game's New Guinea map, the AI was so bad about crashing into hills. But man/manette when I came to THE SF I was stunned at how well the TK's AI pops up and down avoiding terrain. Its so good you can make a low altitude strategic strike sim with this game on that feature alone.
  4. Two ideas I've been suggesting a bit, but I'm doing nothing with these as I'm working my Ring Of Fire campaign, and will be for another 20 years it seems. (1) Kamchatka, as it has amazing terrain generated by TE() (2) South Pacific about 1958 to 1962. China manpower backed by Soviet aviation follow the general script of the Japanese in December 1941 and early 1942. Very mountainous terrain. Lots of opportunity for NAVY and RN/RAF. The short ranges of alot of unrefueled Soviet fighters will hurt them, totally opposite of the long range advantage of A6M2 for Japan in early 1942. So, Yak-25 as primary escort fighter? 1958-1962 has the best mix of ancient subsonic and Mach 2 with alot of stuff in between, and basic early SAMs. I promised Charles I'd make some active volcanoes for his Timor campaign, but I got only half way done. Old 1500 "sf" kilometer test map of this region, can be made much larger:
  5. jomni:: We can't think of it like that because they don't do that. They pop out of a black hole I guess, and only near the Player I assume. It goes back to that sim vs game thing. I want more of a sim, but you can make it fun by "over doing" mission things a bit. If it were me, I would add additional small backup AI flights coming up later, with *real* waypoints flying their own mission, and they can bail out anybody, not just the Player. And that is something even the Player can be aware of in briefing I suppose. Knowing there are -- or are scheduled to be -- backup flights coming up. But you know how schedules seem to work out. Think of the F-4s coming north into NV passing returning flights going south back home, in case they were being chased by MiGs. Player could know about this possible help being available in general. Something like that as one example.
  6. Spectre, last page:: Okay, you mean these helper flights pop out of hyperspace? If so, I can't get near that, as I require all AI aircraft to exist, so to speak, flying their own waypoints the whole time. I'd rather a mission or campaign simply generate backup flights that fly their own missions, helping whoever they come across, which eventually I hope to do in my own campaign when I get her done in about 10 years from now -- and still SF1 too.
  7. Interesting: from a X750 review at Xbit So, if you have a 750 watt PSU, and are only using say 200 watts, than you are using only 200 watts. Larger PSUs let you run higher power, if you want, but also let you run low power. That gives far greater options. Since my fan does not spin I'm using 150watts or less, although I have often looked to see if the fan was spinning and on rare occasions only saw it come to a stop from apparently a short run. I guess when I play the StrikeFighters, my only game, I may just be touching on 150 watts. Less than I thought. I know the fan works because when you first power on, the fan blips a bit and comes to a stop. That's to let you know its working so I've read.
  8. I noticed these photos, very smokey, maybe something added to the exhaust for effect? Scroll down to the F-18 shots ~> http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4964

  10. VonPaulus, not sure now, maybe cat 10.2 when I was switching the cards in and out. Now running 10.4. I suppose the 5000 series is taking time to optimize for, although I did notice a decent improvement in the 4850 performance between 10.2 -- 10.4, or 9.12 - 10.4 don't recall now. I quickly decided the 4850 was the keeper. Also the 5770 is rather loud, tiny fan with restrictive fan casing. I never liked "fancy" looking cooling solutions and they tend to be very loud. One thing about that 5770: I got an ASUS because it had a strong solid bar across the top edge of the card which got rave reviews among Newegg customers. This bar prevents bending the card lengthwise when pushing or pulling, and gives a solid point to handle the card with while installing/removing. Its a very nice feature. liberty:: A larger capacity PSUs won't use more energy than a smaller PSU for a given load. Larger PSUs do allow a larger load. Get as large as possible for future expansion, and its generally thought that PSUs last longer if they are not run always near their max load, which is a rough number apparently. So you can never get "too large" a PSU energy consumption wise, although I've read articles of high wattage PSUs shutting down immediately if they don't detect a minimum threshold load. The newer high wattage PSUs have addressed that apparently, the *good* brands at least. I'm running: AMD Athalon II X2 250 dual core -- 65 watt max Gigabyte "something" 790FX full size ATX motherboard 1 250GB hard drive, plugging in backup hard drives when needed and unplugging them. 1 HD 4850 a few case fans, not much else. Not much load at all. And I still went for the 750W PSU. Its interesting how it works. The fan never runs because I'm using so little load in my system, maybe 20% of the PSU's max most of the time. The fan will kick in when power usage or temperature rise. However, the fan blips and stops at power on start, which I've read is to let you know its working. Basically, in my low power system, the high capacity PSU functions as a fanless PSU. Its designed for this, and Seasonic uses the best components out there for home PC, which is why they are expensive. Power supply is the one item in your computer where the price differential between brands can be near an order of magnitude. However, always stay away from the bargain price PSUs. If you want to save energy, get one of the "Gold" rated PSUs. Seasonic, which generally does not advertise in competition with the brands it makes PSUs for, nevertheless stepped into the market last year with the X650 and X750 and started the popularity of the "gold" series. Top site for PSU reviews is JonnyGuru ~> http://www.jonnyguru.com/ Power supplies are pretty much all they do.
  11. Von Paulus:: That could be in some DX11 games, or under some DX11 features. I was not sure about this when I upgraded so, in the same week I got an ASUS 5770 and a Gigabyte 4850 and tried them both. In SF1 which is DX9, the 4850 gives a solid 20% faster framerates, yet was listed at Newegg for about 30$ less, and that was a relatively expensive 4850. As StrikeFighters original series DX9 is my only game, I could be leading others down the wrong road here, but at least a very affordable wrong choice of road not too difficult to back out of.
  12. If you want the best built and most dependable PSU now available for home PC get the 750Watt Seasonic X750 Gold. Everything in your build will depend on your power supply working great. Think of PSU like the engine on an airplane. Its the core of every computer. Google the hardware reviews on this item. I have one and was planning on getting another for another build, but I'm waiting to see the new Seasonic gold PSU's that were shown at Computex trade show in Taiwan this summer. They are very interesting indeed. Seasonic is the builder of the interior of high end PSU's for some other brands, like Corsair, so I just goto the source so to speak. I've read that other brands often substitute cheaper fans on their high quality Seasonic built interiors. But, czech out the hardware forums for this though. Your selection of ATI 5770 shows you don't want to overspend on a gaming supercard, although you are going Intel i-7 with watercooling. Something doesn't match here. If you are not sure about what gaming supercard to get, just get a "budget" 4850 to start with. If you upgrade later, you will have lost only pennies with zero risk as the 4850 are so well priced now for performance and have a solid history behind them. I think the 5000 series is extremely overpriced right now with little performance advantage except possibly in some DX11 games. I suggest a Gigabyte HD4850 although there are others.
  13. Veltro and Soulfreak can open as many threads as they want.
  14. Sorry to hear that FC. Back when I was tower climbing, we heard stories of guys getting shot at way up there on towers in the waay back country. Some clowns might be out there with laser instead of rifle, or both. Sick. Jedi:: You know, air marshalls fly sometimes, so could an escort armed with laser homing missiles tag along sometimes, maybe orbit near the field.
  15. Yep, a nerd hehe ~> http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2257 Don't laugh. What TK did here has probably never been done before in TheSims.
  16. Go Dagger I don't know what this makes me, butt... When I moved near salt water and learned that -- a whole new world indeed -- I saw my first pocket tide chart card, like fffft wtf is that? I threw it away and used what I learned inland Missip (freshwater) watching the moon. As a closet skywatcher, I always knew where the moon was in its orbit around Earth, day or night, moon above horizon or not, year round, so I always predicted my own tides and fished accordingly. Nobody could understand how I did it. Would that make them salt water rednecks, or me? A nerd? Well I did play StrikeFighters last night.
  17. Tip: Right now, the ATI 5000 series is overpriced for performance. Save money and get a 4850 card. They are faster than 5770 and much less expensive, as well, they have been around for a while and rock solid if you get a good brand. Gigabyte seems to be great, either Nvida or ATI. ATI only here. I never had an ATI card fail on me -- except one 9800 had fan failure. Card still performed great except in heavy Forgotten Battles use it would overheat. Ever since I always used ATI's budget fanless cards. Never thought about adding my own fan to the high end gaming cards ... D-U-H Well I recently found the perfect solution for me: I recently upgraded to the, now aging, higher performance Gigabyte 4850 fanless card. Because it has no fan, they use probably the best heat sink out there for video cards, and use very high quality componenets so it was about 20$ more than normal 4850s. Its the same heatsink they use on their Nvida fanless what I don't know cards -- well -- they used, as these high performance fanless cards are vanishing now. These are made for cases with reasonable airflow. No airflow they will burn up. That's why I wanted this, never wanting to worry about the cheap fans on expensive gaming cards. I have my Noctua case fans blowing near it and temps are good even under load. This is it -- was it. Newegg is out of them now. They may be available elsewhere. But it needs good case airflow. Never tried Nvida but alot of people seem to like them.
  18. But this Poll is raw genius, purity of brilliance. A few years back, I was forced to write in Ron Paul() for U.S. Republican presidential nominee, so I normally would have wrote in F-106 here, but I had to vote for the brute contrarian thought and Xen~esque spontaneateieee pffft (sp?) behind this Poll. ~> F-109
  19. That line is the border between Fog and Sky. Basically, the Fog covers the lack of terrain beyond the defined Horizon Distance. You can consider the Fog as a flat plain on the terrain surface and extending from the Horizon Distance to infinity where the plain meets sky in a flat Earth world, which is what we have. The border line appears near sunset/sunrise, in the sun direction, otherwise the Fog band blends with the Horizon Fog colour. The problem is the SkyColour added to the sky in the sun direction does not blend with the Fog band. Its a limited problem, although quite noticeable in the limited situation described. There is no fix that I know. One may minimize the Fog band and hence the apparent altitude of the border line above the apparent horizon by increasing the Horizon Distance, although that hurts framerates very quickly unless other measures are taken to reduce framerates (increasing tile size, decreasing TextureThreshold in terrain.data, etc...) I hope I got all that right.
  20. Fubar:: Right, DRAM. Its been too long. The only 1990s gear I still use are the old hard drives, well that and IBM Model M home defense keyboard with recoil numpad. Forgot everything else from back then.
  21. Generally, after doing the sim for years, I don't read them except for interesting info, and in the past I've written very big readmies. If I can't handle the install, I do know to go straight to the readme.
  22. Do you see this: I have always seen that 1600 is higher zoom than 3200. I think TK fluffed this, reversed the two zooms.
