Olham 164 Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) Just found these parts of the documentary "WW1 in colour - Blood in the Air" Through the coloured film, it got closer to me in time somehow. There are other parts about the war on the ground and at sea; search YouTube for them. This may have been posted before, but then I missed it. Enjoy watching it, living in peace. Hasse Wind 46 Posted May 6, 2010 I have this series on DVD. They did a good job at colouring the old film with the help of modern technology. Too bad real colour photographs of WW1 era are so extremely rare. Black and white just isn't the same as looking at colours, no matter how good and clear the pic is otherwise. Von Paulus 8 Posted May 6, 2010 There aren't common, but there exists, probably more in private archives than spread in the Internet. This a site that have a few WWI color photographs. I remembered also to have seen some great material in several BBC documentaries about the photographs taken by Albert Khan around the beginning of the century. There a some from WWI. http://www.albertkahn.co.uk/index.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rdiC45HeD0&feature=related The photographs taken did not using a color film, but used another technique with lumpy potatoe. These autochromes are really fantastic. They are a real window to another "time". http://users.telenet.be/thomasweynants/autochromes.html http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/autochromes.html
Hasse Wind 46 Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) Von Paulus, thanks for the link. I saw a documentary series about Albert Kahn's colour photographs last year. Sometimes, but not too often, something good like that is shown on TV. The French were the pioneers of colour photography (and photography in general), so if you see a colour pic from WW1, it's most likely taken by them. And those autochromes have fantastic colours. Olham 164 Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) Wow! Thank you very much, von Paulus, for the links to Albert Kahn. I see those pictures for the first time, except for the WW1 pictures, which I always had believed to be coloured by retouche. Beautiful! A window in time indeed! The better color was interesting and as previously noted, the "Blood In The Air" has been removed. So I am now searching the internet for it or any other footage of interest. I am downloading these 5 bits now for my MP3 player that also plays short video clips.
