I think this may be a typo (or just complete BS) - or do you think that they wanted to outdo the rest of the world by getting a photo with 21 jets flying alongside a tu-95 from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7236241.stm Japan accuses Russia of incursion Japan has accused Russia of violating its airspace over the Pacific Izu islands and demanded an explanation. Japan responded by scrambling 22 jets and lodging an official protest with the Russian embassy. But a spokesman for the Russian air force denied any incursion into Japanese airspace had occurred. Alexander Drobyshevsky told Russia's Itar-Tass news agency that strategic bomber flights had been "carried out in strict accordance with international rules on flying over neutral waters, without violating the border between the two countries". Rally Russia last violated Japan's airspace in January 2006 near Rebun Island near the northern island of Hokkaido, Japanese officials said. On Thursday, Japan held an annual rally to demand the return of four disputed islands - known as the Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan - which Russia seized in the closing days of World War II. The dispute has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty to formally end the war. It was not clear whether Saturday's flyby was related to the rally. Despite their territorial disputes, Japan and Russia have recently indicated their desire to improve relations, the BBC's Chris Hogg reports from Tokyo. Russia wants Japanese financial support for development of its far eastern regions while Japan wants greater access to Russia's oil reserves. Whether the alleged incident was a mistake or something more sinister, such as an attempt to test Japan's defensive tactics, it has rattled the Japanese government, our correspondent says. You think they're trying to send the message "Nobody %^&*'s with Japan!"?? You know... If they had F-22s, That'd probably read "Japan responded by scrambling A jet..." SayethWhaaaa 245 Posted February 9, 2008 I heard earlier on the BBC that technically Japan and Russia/USSR have never signed a peace treaty after WWII due to disputes over the Kuril islands. Maybe that might explain part of the reason behind Japan's response. Plus, they've been aware of the VVS's plans to resume long range flights. May have been counter-sabre rattling by Japan... Viggen 644 Posted February 10, 2008 (edited) I heard that the JASDF has had incidents with PLANAF (People's Liberation Army Navy Air Force) An-12s flying near JMSDF ships and near Japan it self. JediMaster 451 Posted February 11, 2008 The 142 and 95 are both Bears. The 142 is the maritime patrol version, the 95 was the strat bomber version. You can usually tell them apart by the fuselage length--the 142 has a plug forward of the wing so the nose is much farther forward of the wing. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

They are simply "flexing their muscles" for the rest of the world to see. In the last 6 months they have flown Tu-95s over military bases in Guam and England. I'd love to know when the Russian Military flew a TU-95 over a military base in England as that would have definetly been on the news here in the UK, over the North Sea maybe but certainly never over land or within territorial waters!
