Gr.Viper Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Ok... Despite being a WWI fan I took WOI for a test drive. Strike Mission - Skyhawk - Hard everything and, I think, Unlimited detail (whooping 16 fps!). When not in WWI I always choose ground attack. You don't think this payload is a bit of overkill? After figuring out how the heck the thingamamobs that stick out of wings are controlled and enjoying the rear view through mirrors (hey, some had them in WWI too!) I took off dragging my tail as if it were loaded with a ton of bricks. Got to target area on manual control, ordered wingmen to wreak havoc on the ground, missed with all my clusters, heard wingman receive a greeting salute from SAM. While they were busy I somehow managed to make another run dropping all GBUs on heads of Arabs tickling me with machineguns. Followed this by a napalm goodbye which naturally didn't hit ***t. Lost another wingman to SAM. Strangely enough we weren't attacked by enemy aircraft - some of them ignored us as they had no radar and were way too high. The others probably were just too amused buy our pefrormance. So me and the other guy got out of target area at which point I noticed that flying on 100% throttle the whole time actually left me with 1/3 of fuel. But I had no chance to learn what happens when fuel gauge hits zero, because enjoying scenery and low-level flight at the same time leads to what? Right, you understand. But I'll be back... for more. So... Noob question one. Why's Skyhawk so [censored] responsive to roll input? NQ2: Isn't that simple gunsight supposed to be projected only on the sight prism? With 6DOF TrackIR it kinda wanders off-limits easily. Quote
Hawk MMS Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I downloaded WOI yesterday. Sadly I only had time for 2 missions. F-16 Intercept. A whole mess of MiG-21's on strike and escort mission. 2 of my 4 IRM hit. 2 more kills with guns. What i noticed in using the gun was that the site works really well. Made for intense dogfight. Love it. Quote
JediMaster Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 The Scooter was well known as a fast roller. I think it did 720 degrees/second in roll? I noticed it's a bit twitchy myself, just like I noticed the Mirage seems to resist the roll and roll back a bit. As for the gunsight thing, I think it's just a case of making it work with cockpit turned off and not having limits for display when the cockpit is on. Quote
+Johan217 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) Something I noticed last night, trolling through the Mission Data CAT file: all the DATA_INIs for the WOV and WOE campaigns are already included in the CAT. Interesting. Another new thing about the campaigns: the frontline data are now included in the campaign_data.ini rather than in the terrain's movement ini. And discovered these new entries in the campaign data file: SurpriseAttack=TRUE ----> I think this reduces enemy air activity in the first mission(s) AirOffensive[001].FocusArea=Cairo ----> gives more control over which targets are chosen AllowRandomAceCreation=FALSE ----> self explanatory UseFAC=FALSE ----> I think this prevents the use of random FAC aircraft (useful for heavily modded installations) Also (for individual groundunits): StartOffensiveDate=06/06/1967 I assume this instructs groundunits not to go on the offensive before a specific date. Some welcome additions for campaign builders Edited February 22, 2008 by Johan217 Quote
+Dave Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 You don't think this payload is a bit of overkill? There is never a such thing as too much ordinance! Quote
+Spectre_USA Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 One tiny nit to pick. It is good to have the medals button, but mine is always greyed out. Why? As I have not received a one! 6 missions into a Netz campaign, wreaking havoc with 43 total kills, 7 in the air, and not one shiny medal to show for it! In the prior iterations, I'd have received a metric buttload by now. Have the parameters changed that much, or is it just broken? Anyone else get a medal yet? Quote
Gr.Viper Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 There is never a such thing as too much ordinance! There is! 16 Vikhr missiles on Su-25T. Even if you fire them in salvos of two (maximum that guidance system can handle at a time) you stlill have to make 8 (4 if you got quick fingers) perfectly straight runs at the target aiming the bleeding visual tracker and keeping straight flight after launch so that the almighty beam-riding missile didn't get lost. And the guys below will be waiting for you on the second run already. The system is good for attack choppers (still, it's no Hellfire) but high-precision ground attack is pretty much hit and run for a plane. Quote
Caesar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Yep...only one so far, prolly from that 2v8 in which both me and my wingy survived Quote
triplethr3at Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I dont know if anyone figured this out but if you hold down the trigger for too long your guns will jam. And you can get large transports to apear on your iaf airfields by simply putting them in your aircraft folder 9c-130 for example). It also is almost impossible to taxi anywhere because the aircraft moves so slow on the ground. At full thrust im making barely 15 knots. also the more kills you get the more little kill scores show up on your plane. same goes for the ai. Quote
DerAlte Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Great game ! I have always been a fan of TK's so-called "lite" sims. It seems with every game it gets better and better. With the work around, it runs perfect with VISTA. The following pics shows what I get with my rig; Athlon 64 X2 5200+ ATI X1650SE 512 mb gfx ( with Cat. 8.2 AA 2 , AF 4 Vsync on) 2 gig RAM Vista Home Premium I have everything maxed out, but shadows turned off. Syrinx Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 And discovered these new entries in the campaign data file: SurpriseAttack=TRUE ----> I think this reduces enemy air activity in the first mission(s) Well, I flew a recce mission in an A4 (in single mission mode) and no sooner had I got wheels and flaps up after taking off my wingie calls "bandits, he's right behind you". A Syrian Mig 21 was coming up behind me, I have never experienced this surprise attack in any of the other Wings Over series. Maybe that's what the above line in the file does ?? Quote
Caesar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I also noticed that the wingmen call Bingo Fuel and Spike. Also at BVR they don't generally confirm kills, though it does happen every once in a while (that's not a complaint). Now, I've tested the Gripen in WoI but I fear if I add the gun with the current gun editor all of my guns will disappear, has anyone tested out the current gun editor? Quote
BattlerBritain Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I'm just adding the weapons a bit at a time and starting with SAMs. Just added the Israeli SAMs in the form of Stingers and HAWKs only to find that the Israel Terrain doesn't have any SAM sites specified for the Israelis. Also, has anyone flown over the Pyramids yet? I can see that they're specified in the terrain file but I can't get them to appear. Might have to add them from Gepards terrain. Quote
rhugouvi Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) This sure looks great! I guess it could only sound even more immersive with an Hebrew speech pack ;) If it can be of some use, here's a file I've written for my Vietnamese speech pack. Some words are in French, but I'm sure you can find out what they mean :) Help yourself! Dialogues_Wings_over_Vietnam.rar Edited February 22, 2008 by rhugouvi Quote
MigBuster Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 also the more kills you get the more little kill scores show up on your plane. same goes for the ai. That used to happen in Strike Fighters - though it used to bug and go white if you shot down too many - forget what the threshold was Quote

LOL - that would be a refreshing change - got an Airmedal in just about every completed mission in the others. Quote
Viggen Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) Downloading now So if now I won't get a medal for every s Batz mission I do, that means I won't be like a Soviet Marshal or Breznev. Edited February 22, 2008 by JA 37 Viggen Quote
arf16 Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 That used to happen in Strike Fighters - though it used to bug and go white if you shot down too many - forget what the threshold was The threshold was 100 kills, I think because the game engine didn't know how to record triple digits on the aircraft...kinda like the Y2K thing... Gr.Viper Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Damn... I'd better get a stopwatch somewhere. Mirages burn up their fuel awfully fast. Tried intercept on F-15. Got confused with radar modes. Wasted all Sparrows, sent all Sidewinders at one Mig who evaded them easliy. Managed to work out how air-combat radar mode works and nearly got first gun kill. Unknowingly evaded a load of missiles launched from 6 o'clock. Off to read the manual, I guess... Quote

Didnt use the F-15 in WOE much - was just unfair on the poor Migs - sounds like things may have changed in that regards Quote
Caesar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 (edited) How to defeat PD-beaming: At over 100 miles with an active homing missile. (Range at hit was 84NM, launch distance 107NM) They beamed my radar after I launched, sure, but that wasn't enough against the Buffalo. The pit is by The Trooper, not yet finalized at time of post. Caesar Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 It's the second sentance in the final line, The Trooper made it, he sent it to me when I was trying to fix my stock cockpit. He hasn't finished it yet tho, but it does indeed kick ass. Quote
Gr.Viper Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 You gotta get up close and personal and gun their @$$, Israeli style! Easy there I'm just getting into jet combat. After 500 MG rounds common for WWI birds your tiny cannon ammo box is just too little for me. But yeah... Eagle vs. Migs is unfair  One pull of the stick and you get almost sattelite view on them. Quote
