pic of a British aircraft in development

I completely concur...and still stand back wondering what this naming fetish is all about...I mean the F-20 thread was completely over-run with it to the point that it is not even worth reading the thread...a shame.

Certainly hope this thread does not get hijacked further down that deplorable path.

Excellent documentary posted by the way!

Looks an awful lot like the Jaguar, doesn't it?

Actually....it looks more like a Jaguar and A-5 Vigilante had a child

I disagree somewhat.

Now, like with anything else, people can go overboard. With that being said, I think combat aircraft should get a name...official or otherwise.

A lot of times, the name can evoke images or feelings toward an aircraft (good or bad). Something that rolls off the tongue...and doesn't sound sanitary like an alphanumeric designation.

That's why were here, right? Because we enjoy the feel (even simulated) of flight?

Bean-counters call it a B-1B.

Pilots call it a Bone, because that's what it does to you after it rips over your head at 200 feet, beyond Mach 1, the wall of air distorting light , leaving a smashed trail like God's own finger, whipping up dust and debris in a thunderstorm of fury...just before the sound and heat of four F101s putting out 30000lbs of thrust each drive your eardrums through the other side of your skull.

Then the eighty-four 500 pound bombs that it just puked out in 2 seconds arrive on your head...

I thought the B-1 was called 'Bone' simply because of the B-one designation.

You missed the point of the post.

It's called by a name, not by a designation by those who operate it.

My point was, most pilots call their aircraft by it's name (official or otherwise), not by it's designation. There are exceptions...but they are rare.

Huns, Voodoos, The Deuce, Rhinos, Thuds, Zippers, BUFFs, Vipers, Eagles, Hornets...names...not numbers and letters on a spreadsheet.

In the wide world it will always be the TSR-2 no matter what arbitary name this forum decides to allocate it, lets not get sidetracked yet again with naming conventions but instread concerntrate on an eagerly awaited aircraft which shows every indication of living up to the high standard of Craigs previous creation.

Gosh, looks like this beastie is surrounded in controversy, all we need now are some socialist pinko's to come along and cancell it :haha:

But, there are clearly 2 compelling arguments, Fastcargo has a very good point, a name endears the aircraft more to it's crews etc....

the other point is equally as valid, let's not take this thread down that road, so for now, keep names to PM's to me or Ant so we can make a list of the ones we can make a poll on.

So to start this thread back on the correct path, heres a quick screenie of an effect I am working on, basically I don't like the way the game cuts off exhaust smoke when burners kick in so I have created ths effect to keep some smoke on burner (this particular effect is an edit to the data ini, but I am creating taylored AB and smoke effects for the TSR)

We all know how smoky aircraft were from that era.

OT :

Sparkomatic, actually, it wasn't the F-20 thread as the F-20 already HAD a name, Tigershark, you probably are thinking of the F-29 threads, of which there are two, one discussing the plane, the other discussing the name, no problem here... ;)

Craig>

She's absolutely gorgeous, I always had a soft spot for her and her tragic history, so symbolic of the organised destruction of the british aeronautic industry.

You missed the point of the post.

Not at all. My query had nothing to do names and numbers.

My query was against your deliciously colourful origin of the unofficial name 'Bone' applied to the B-1B.

I'm 100% sure it simply comes from B-one! Or is that too obvious?!

Spinners, I guess you are both right, the pun being to good for a pilot to pass up when it's justified...

Now, let's concentrate on drooling, the bird craig's working on being one of the most elegant ever to fly.

I see it comin plane is finished and not ready for release cause of no name!!!!

That won't happen, seriously it has a name, just not one that makes everyone happy, we can always give Her a propper name after we have flown and fought in Her.

Nice work...I like the idea of a 'smoky' AB effect.

Anyway, look forward to your release when you're ready there CB.
