Thanks Dave,

it's a pleasure to do things for peoples that appreciates details ... and ... before you start some heavy modding on the recce pit (and blame me for that  ) ... i've found good images of the F-101C pit. The differences are not so heavy and i thought that is possible that i make one with minimal pain for my ass  .

Its up to you my friend. I don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Here an update of the RF-101C pit

A different 'C pit would be excellent if possible :good: .

On that note, are there any good books on the Voodoo available? I have a slim aerofax book on the B and F models. I know Squadron never did an "In-Action" series. There is a new book out called Voodoo Warriors. Has anyone read this one, is it worth getting? Are there any other good books out there? :dntknw:

No, I don't think SSP ever did an In Action, but theres loads of others:

SSP: Modern Military Aircarft #5002 McDonnell F-101 Voodoo (covers all variants)

Osprey Color: USAF Fighter Intereceptors - Cold War Warriors (superb Centruy series photos!!!)

Detail & Scale #21: McDonnell F-101 Voodoo (great for modelers, and 3d builders!)

These are just the ones I have. I'm sure there's more somewhere

For the movie buffs, at the end of "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming", a pair of Voodoos overfly the sub as they're being escorted out of Glouscter (probably birds from Otis or somewhere close by)

IMDB

Although the action in the film is supposed to take place on fictional "Gloucester Island" off the coast of New England, most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Mendocino California. Mendocino in the 1960s was a somewhat remote artist colony on a rocky cape projecting into the Pacific Ocean, about 100 miles north of San Francisco. The harbor scenes were filmed in NOYO Harbor, just south of Fort Bragg, where Carine's Fish Grotto and Cappy's Bar still exist to this day. (2006)

so I wonder if they came out of Hamilton AFB

Yeah, F-101 is a very interesting story for those that haven't read much about it.

It was designed to SAC requirement for a long-range escort fighter, but SAC phased out that requirement in the late 1950s and all SAC fighter wings transferred to TAC. Its just as well, because the F-101 stood no chance in a fight against MiG-19s and 21s due to its heavy weight, lack of maneuverability and dangerous departure tendency at high AoA. So the F-101A and F-101C went to TAC and the only role they could fill was as a nuclear bomber. That was the responsibility of the F-101s stationed in England. The Voodoo really didn't find a niche until the interceptor and recon versions were developed, where its high speed and excellent rate of climb were taken advantage of.

I smell a contrarian buying opportunity. Heavy weight and "lack of maneuverability" are shared traits among the most successful fighters of all time: SPAD, P-47, etc...

MiG-19s would have stood no chance against properly missile armed F-101 escort fighters, assuming the tactic is waves of small penetration flights, using missiles only, and at high altitudes only, and no turning and slowing down to gunfight targets missed by missiles. However, I would certainly, as soon as possible, re-arm the F-101 with either nucular Falcons, or AIM-9Bs which proved stunningly reliable and destructive against "manueverable" MiG-17s at the high altitudes of the 1958 Formosa Straits air combat....and drop the gun.

SAC gave up because even the F-101 did not have the range to escort B-52s all the way to their targets, but over medium distances, the Voodoo would have made a stunningly successful penetration fighter with some decent missiles. At high altitudes, the MiG-19 could not manuever any better than F-101 for practical use in combat, nor could anything else (B-36 could out turn F-86 what version I'm not sure). The MiG-21 (or Su-7 fighter) would have the speed to catch an afterburning F-101, but not for more than a few minutes.

True, sound tactics overcome disadvantages.

Great points. When the planes are ready, it will be fun to run some "what-if" scenarios. A possible counter-tactic would be for the Soviets to attack from well below the US bombers, forcing the Voodoos (not sure what kind of lookdown capability they had) to come down to engage them where the Voodoos disadvantages would be more of a factor.

Thanks!

This counter-tactic might let the bombers through...not sure. If Voodoos came down, they won't come down far. Say Voodoos at 45k feet, MiGs at 30k. Any lower and the MiGs pose no threat to anybody, so ignore them. Voodoo drops to 30k and can keep its speed and attack, if miss, forget and keep going. Another flight of Voodoos would be following. If most MiGs are missed, that means they likely were forced to turn away from their target, assuming high altitude Sidewinder effectiveness of 1958. If MiGs turn away, they may not have another chance at the bombers. An RAF Lightning interceptor pilot wrote that they had enough fuel for one high speed intercept attempt, similar to Me-163 strangely enough.

However, there was a tactic the PVO trained for with Su-9 and Su-11, and that was against high flying intruders (U-2 primarily) but this was not ready until after Gary Powers. This tactic involved gaining high supersonic speed at about 50k feet, then pulling up into a zoom to launch. I'd guess the older missiles PVO were not great at this. On the other hand, the R-80 used by Tu-128 was designed for engaging targets at altitudes far higher than the launch aircraft, but that was years after Voodoo prime time.

Some severe game limitations must also be considered. I believe that deleting guns would let AI aircraft fly away after missiles run out, instead of looking for a gunfight. Also, the sim does not allow AI aircraft to use afterburning dash as a waypoint. I have not figured out a way to overcome this other than over powering the engines, and using afterburner emitters, for "normal" non-afterburning flight. I don't like that but can't think of anything else. The sim is not made for strategic gaming, only for tactical, but then they all are.
