Soldiers from the paratroops and Foreign Legion were among the dead Monday - the biggest single combat loss for international forces in Afghanistan in more than three years. Sarkozy is heading to Kabul on Tuesday night to assure French troops "that France is at their sides". The ambush and ensuing battle near Surobi district east of Kabul comes as France is sending hundreds more troops to Afghanistan. France's top military official, Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, is denying a statement from an Afghan security official that four French soldiers had been kidnapped by insurgents and then killed.
