President Nicolas Sarkozy is insisting that France remains committed to fighting terrorism, after 10 French soldiers were killed and 21 wounded near the Afghan capital in an unusually deadly ambush.

Soldiers from the paratroops and Foreign Legion were among the dead Monday - the biggest single combat loss for international forces in Afghanistan in more than three years.

Sarkozy is heading to Kabul on Tuesday night to assure French troops "that France is at their sides".

The ambush and ensuing battle near Surobi district east of Kabul comes as France is sending hundreds more troops to Afghanistan.

France's top military official, Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin, is denying a statement from an Afghan security official that four French soldiers had been kidnapped by insurgents and then killed.

Sad news. Things are heating up in Afghanistan as the Taliban has regrouped. It about time to send them back into the hills again.

It's a work in progress. They've assaulted but not overran nothing in our sector, thank god... Hats off to the French though, all jokes aside, it's serious.

They'll be pissed off about these losses and punish the Taliban for them. The Foreign Legion guys are tough son of a guns.

Heard about this in the daily pre-flight intel brief. Came as a real shock. Sad to see any Coalition members lose their troops.

Forget about sending them back to the hills, ANNIHILATE them.

Too bad about friendly losses, that's never good.
