Given the power plants available at the time, I would guess she'd be somewhat like the Mirage III, all day to get to maneuvering energy level, one good maneuver and she's done.

Another hunch (hey, I'm no aeronautic engineer), since you removed the dog-tooth from the wing, the variable incidence is gone, the intakes are moved and you apparently diminished the anhedral of the wing, I'd suggest that the stabs now have no good reason left to be dihedral, in fact, in addition with the large and tailfin I'd be willing to bet the present configuration is more subject to yaw-roll coupling than the original design.

 

I'd also add ventral fin(s) to help yaw stability (most planes of such a configuration had fins or quickly adopted them).

 

If you're going for a dirt cheap plane, you could also remove the avionics hump inherited from the bullpup-capable Crusader.

It couldn't be used to store enough fuel to be interesting, and the lack of need for advanced avionics in such a cheap plane would not justify the presence of spare space.

 

Oh dear, next I'll suggest a smaller tailfin, a moving intake cone and an angled landing gear to improve the ability to use centerline plyons, and we'll end up with a Mirage F1, except you could have your plane up in the air in the early 60's, whereas the Mirage entered service in the early 70's.

 

The design for the most part however, is now not going to change. I'm lazy. Deal with it.

It will get ventral stabilizers, been focusing on the landing gear lately, but I'm getting concerned about ground clearance on rotation so they may be pretty small. Wings are still anhedral, should be relatively the same as the F-8 since it followed the 3 view. Maybe just doesn't show up in the render cuz of the camera angle. Hump stays cuz I like it. :tongue: Big vertical stabilizer stays cuz I think it makes it look American, and its not like engineers didn't make design mistakes in the 60's (and possibly fix on a later model...). Problem with the landing gear is that the aircraft is very narrow. The F-1 widens a great deal after the intakes, whereas the F-112 returns to the same width as the nose. The landing gear is very much like the F-104. Moving intake cone ain't gonna happen at this point, too far along, too big of a headache.

It reminds me of the F-11F with a rounder body and shoulder mounted wing.

Nope, that's probably Vought submission to the VFX (in collaboration with Dassault for the swing wing technology, hence the ressemblance to the Mirage G).

 

However I was not aware it went as far as the full-scale mockup stage (or further ?).

 

I think this picture (or a link to a site featuring it) already came up on the boards (on the topic of the F-14, Mirage G and/or F-111B, but I couldn't find it with the search engine).

Yep, that was Vought's (actually LTV) submission for what later became the F-14 (V-507). They progressed all the way to a full mockup stage.

 

Photoshopped? Pffft...please.

You know what ? We should turn that into a regular game...

 

Once upon a time in a French aviation magazine, a dozen pictures were published every month, only parts of airplanes (a nose, an air intake, a landing gear) and we had until next issue to send our guesses on which aircrafts these were from, that was quite entertaining.

that's not a bad looking plane! I knew there was something familliar about it, then once the big image opened I realised that the canopy, landing gear and most of the fuselage are dead ringers for F-14 stuff, and I find the F-14 as one of the nicest looking planes ever. Natch. Those inakes sure look out of place, and that tail is interesting.

Do Camel Cigarettes. About 15 years back, I was in 7-11 or Lil Champ store.

 

Inside the front door they had CAMEL display advertisement, you know the Cool Camel smoking with sunglasses. The display had the sharpest airplane design I ever seen. How so?

 

The plane was Su-15, double delta wing...but...

 

It had Mirage style conical inlets like yours...and...

 

It was shown taking off, with the twin engine "swoosh" leading back to AIRCRAFT CARRIER on the water way below the plane. Totally fictional plane, but super sharp. Call it the Camel hehe. :dntknw:

Yeah it'll have ventrals. I even got a lecture on ventrals from my aero engineer friend. Whether I wanted it or not...

 

This is buried though, along with everything else. I'm moving to Oklahoma Sunday for 6 weeks of training then I'm moving to Washington state.

I'm glad you guys are eagerly awaiting this, but its gonna still be a bit longer. I know I've been saying "real life commitments" for like 2 or 3 months now, but I really am going through some hectic times. Still getting settled in here in Spokane, just finished my first week at work as an air traffic controller (and I absolutely love it, even though I've just barely started training). In a few weeks or a month I should be able to afford more time to put toward leisure time and be under a lot less financial stress to the point where I'll get around to looking at my projects again.
