Woa, now this is interesting. So they are recognizing that USAF mostly operates at mid to high altitudes, and haven't had a gun kill since....? I always said, if you want to own the ground, you have to own the high ground. Okay my first *quick* look, never heard of this before...

 

For the air-to-air role, both defensive and offensive, they propose to add active electronically-scanned array radar and allow some of the hardpoints to carry air-to-air missiles. Even with its somewhat reduced range as compared to the original B-1B, its fuel capacity remains quite large. This would allow it to escape from unfavorable air-to-air encounters by simply running away; there are few enough aircraft capable of Mach 2+ performance in general, and those that are deployed can maintain these speeds for only very short periods of time.

Now I have to say I like this. Although I'd prefer upgrading those old SR-71s with modernized Phoenix, but this is a start.

 

Ceaser has a point: 50 miles with what, AMRAAM...? Bring the Phoenix back home to the Air Force where it was born.

The AIM-120D's will be able to reach out and touch someone at 130+ miles. That is 30 more miles than the R-77 of any version. Also its PK is in the 90 percentile. So screw the AIM-54, these bad boys are better.

All righty, anything within 130 miles is straight f*cked. How many 120D's does that carry, 24 or so?

The AIM-120D's will be able to reach out and touch someone at 130+ miles. That is 30 more miles than the R-77 of any version. Also its PK is in the 90 percentile. So screw the AIM-54, these bad boys are better.

 

 

But that wouldn't be an AMRAAM - it would be an ALRAAM. lol

 

In all seriousness though, sounds badass. I would like to see an AIM-54 upgraded similarly though. I mean, it's like taking a 427 Cobra - some modern things can outdo it, but drop in an all aluminum, EFI 427 with a T-56, modern rubber, Koni Single Adjustables, and some stiff sways, then it's a different story.

Depends... if the missile quantity, range, and accuracy is good enough, I guess it wouldn't matter. But then, you could just mount them on the bomber and not need the escort. lol

Buffs are not slow as people think. However we will send what assets are required for the mission. If its a deep penetration mission then yeah they would send a B-1R with its long legs. With all the AIM-120's it could carry with AESA radar then it would be ensure the strikers got in unmolested.

Yeah, folks. Just cause a plane is big, heavy, and has a large wing span does not mean it's slow as a snail. Believe me, I was shocked by how fast I got from Gulf Port, Mississippi to my base back in Cali on a C-17. Those baby's can haul!

Fellas, how to make use of this Mach 2+ hi level speed, when escorting a near Mach 1 bomber? I have some ideas -- everybody knows I came to teh SF hoping to see F-105s clearing a penetration corridor into Siberia for B-52s.

 

I gotta say, this B-1R would be my kind of fighter. I am impressed. Never thought I'd say that about a post-modern all digital wonder jet. Well...Aussom!

Anyway, that's what I was saying (in my 2 entirely seperate statements in one post) - the way to cure the speed differential between escort and bomber is to use the B-70, and just have it throttle back for the escorts to keep up, and then it can hit it when trouble brews while the escorts stay behind to tangle (increasing the effectiveness since the bomber won't be slow to egress remaining a threat).

 

Although.... AIM-120s on a B-1 is still missiles on a bomber, so I still think a turret or several would be funny (-1s and all) [just not as cool as an acutal escort, and the B-1R is pretty badass looking]

Well ofcourse it can't go over Mach1 but even F-15 does not fly over mach1 most of it's mission or it would have to have a SR-71 capable of refueling(KS-71? ) with it lol
