+Dave Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Looking at a map of the GUIK Gap, the Soviets would have a long flight from Murmansk. Their bombers could do it but I am not sure if they would have escort. There is an island 400 miles northeast of Iceland called Jan Mayen with a runway of 5200 ft. It could handle maybe TU-22M's if they were not overloaded but I think that might be a stretch because they need about 6900 ft of take off length and 4200 ft to land. The Bear needs 9200+ ft. The TU-16 needs about 5500+ ft. Having said that, there is room to lengthen the runway and the Soviets would have no problem adapting to the very harsh weather. Other scenarios comes right out of Red Storm Rising. The Soviets take Iceland and launch attacks from there. Thoughts? Quote
+JonathanRL Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 You know, for a minute there I tought TK had gone and released it :D Quote
+Dave Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 Sorry.....let me rename the title. Quote
SFP1Ace Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Other scenarios comes right out of Red Storm Rising. The Soviets take Iceland and launch attacks from there. Thoughts? I've got a feeling that's how it's gonna play out, Dave. Maybe I even read about it in some obscure post long tme ago over at TW forums, not sure though. Another thing - how many campaigns will we get? I think at least 2 - one for mid '70s and another one for early to mid '80s (hence the Tu-22M3). Quote
+hgbn Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 If I remember correctly TK have stated that the terrains done with the newer terrain engine will be smaller... So unless this is not true I can't see where the heavy long range bombers should be based. Maybe the main target isn't Iceland?? Maybe he want to move the fight closer to Russia?? Quote
+JonathanRL Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 You thinking the Norwegian Coast, hgbn? That would be interesting, I doubt its closer to murmansk, cause then it would be SF2 Barents Sea. A tad OT, Operation Polar Victory is one of the most brilliant strategies I seen attributed to Russians in fiction :D. I think that says more about military authors then anything else :) Quote
+SkateZilla Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 i think the soviets start out on hte island already, and US launches forces to counter, as they can easily go after the US East coast from the island. Quote
Silverbolt Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 (edited) maybe he implements a different spawning aircrafts method on the map and we get delegated to intercep role only, no matter where the threat comes from ? Edited December 1, 2011 by Silverbolt Quote
+Brain32 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Iceland will be Red. Blue will move in to gain air superiority and support the invasion in an effort to regain control of Iceland. That's why the NAVY and F-14 are in the spotlight, I suspect there will be no blue land on the map and that A-7 will be our main groundpounding machine. Why I think so? First like HGBN noted he mentioned something about terrains being smaller, well...if you check out GE, distance from Iceland coast to the nearest next coast is roughly 1000km in all sane directions. We might get Faroe Islands but - there's only one civil airfield there(to my suprise), runway lenght ~4000ft Ofcourse Greenland is an option if we got further North but I don't think so. Quote
+Dave Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 Ah that is good point Henrik.....the scenario plays out as the Soviets are in Norway and have the North Cape locked down. I have that scenario all written out too. Left me find it and post it. Quote
column5 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 One of the things I always wanted was the ability to spawn flights in and out at the edge of the map rather than requiring an airbase for them to originate form. That feature would be nice for this scenario. Quote
Guest Pfunk Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 The way I understood TK was that we will take part in an operation to retake Iceland. I have a feeling our terrain makers are about to get more important. Quote
+hgbn Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 If he don't change the parameters for campaign victory. and add amphibious landings as a possibility it gotta be near a larger landmass. Quote

Like have the bombers take off on their base and the escorts will meet them half way using Jan Mayen. Falcon Quote
+hgbn Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 It would be so cool. If the bombers get the ability to spawn from the edge of the map. could be very useful for us modders Quote
fallenphoenix1986 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 It could be a fleet to fleet action or mybey convoy duty? Quote
+Dave Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 http://www.harpoonhq.com/harpoon3/scenarios/plot-ww3in1985.html This would be perfect, yeah its 1985 but we can swing it. Quote

Wrench Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 A-10 Warthogs going anti-ship against the Soviet Fleet. that was done in The Wingman #6: The Final Storm terrains smaller? how much smaller than they get? again, it's the 'wait and see' game Quote
JediMaster Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I've also done it many times in LOMAC and Flaming Cliffs. Let me tell you, that's where the A-10s slow speed is a pain! You're in their SAM envelope too long before you can escape as a result, although if you get in close enough you can actually strafe effectively (unlike any USN planes). Quote
+hgbn Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 You guys are thinking way too big :) Remember our games are budget games :) The only flyable will be F-14' date=' unless you merge with previous titles. And the only landmass on the map will be Iceland, and the campaign will center around capture and re-capture of Iceland. TK --[/quote'] Quote
+hgbn Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Our next terrain engine will not use TOD' date=' everything will be done in max and LOD format. And the map is going to be smaller, and have shorter horizon/clip distance so we can have much more detailed terrain up close. Just reducing the map size from 1000km to 300km (size of iceland, surround by repeating ocean) allow us to increase the detail by 10x already, and by bringing in horizon a bit more, we can display even higher density of objects/terrain details up close. The map is still 100x large than any maps on FPS, helo-sim, or arcade flight games, so we can't never get to that level of details (without further reducing the size and horizon, or throwing ridiculously huge sum of amount of money at it), but we feel it may strike a better balance for most casual players with better graphics.[/quote'] Quote
