That is really great to see that seaplane taking off from the water, it really opens up more possibilities for this game.

 

Since you only mentioned FE in your post above, does this apply to FE2 also ???

 

 

Edit: To answer my own question, yes, you can land and take-off from water in FE2 also.

Great screen captures of the plane Quack. I'll make some flying boats when I get more time.

Over at SF, Suicidal has a U-boat which I put into the Flanders terrain. I had to change the guns and the service dates in the Data.ini. It's GroundObjectRole is "Warship". In the Flanders Types.ini I gave it a target type of "Misc". It shows up as a target in some of the missions, and it does fire back at you. It doesn't move though.

 

I have FE Gold, there is a NavalObject.dll in the Objects folder and the ObjectList.ini lists a naval object. So at least some of the naval stuff is in there, but I don't know how to access it.

 

SF has some float planes in the download section, how does the game engine handle them? Maybe someone who's worked with naval objects in SF can figure out how to get them working in FE.

Here are a couple of additional 'shots'

Current issues:

- Can't get the heightmap correctly (I've certain peaks like the Himalaya and holes in the terrain....have to sort this out)

- Tilesets a nowhere properly placed, except roughly the coastline (where I've to flatten out certain island)

- Tilesets will have to be reworked (rivers through rocky mountains, trenches in mountains, etc.)

- etc. etc. etc.

Take your time. There are bound to be snaggs everywhere. But it's looking beautiful so far. The high snowy peaks look amazing. There were many battles in the mountains too. So some trenches scattered around might be a nice touch

unfortunatly SF seems to handle seaplanes the same as FE. they have to have the gear down or invisible gear or skids in order to land without blowing up. also the will show on land bases from time to time in single missions.That terrain is just looking better and better. it's a work of art. your hard work is very apperciated.

They do work though. As long as a base is set for the seaplanes in campaign mode. The bases will have to be made and added to the terrains' Targets.INI. I could do that for everyone and just put it in the DL section. I bit time consuming but well worth it. I'll scatter some ships around too.

Hi Everyone - just want to keep this thread as a kind of diary and of course show you the latest status

 

Quick summary:

- Reworked quite a lot of tiles

- Still fixing minor heightmap issues

- Added two airfields (just to fly quickly around)

- Added major towns/cities (ok, 2-3 are just fantasy, e.g. fakes)

- Added trenches in rocky- and snowy-tiles

- Frontline will be the Isonzo river instead of the Piave (which is farther west and wouldn't give much to the italians in terms of airfields). Sorry for this, esp. for late war scenarios, but I had to make a choice

- Still unclear for me as of what part of the map is 'flyable' and where it stops (so in other words the how big is the frame, which would be just eyecandy from far away)

- Certain rivers have to be flattened, or completely removed...looks silly if the river goes up-down the mountains

- Target-Areas, balloons, etc. so all the nice little stuff is still missing ...bottom of the priority list

- Currently positioning tiles one-by-one....this will take ages

That is beautiful!!! It's so exciting. Ofcourse my big campaign I've been working on is the "Battle of the Piave River" of of June 15, 1918. Oh well. I've been pretending for a couple of years now that "Vogesen" is an Italian terrain. So I sure as hell wont complain about a REAL Italian terrain because of a front line location! Thanks gterl. Love seeing progress pics.

I think you can edit the frontline in the campaign.ini itself. I'm experimenting with this in the Palestine map for my next project.

 

If you don't have enough Italian airfields, you can go to each airfield and give it NumSquadrons=12. I have done it in the Vogesen terrain for my Armchair Aces pack and it works!

Take your time though. You are proving the value of FE as an open code game.

 

Hopefully TK and his team will pitch in with some mods to the game engine, but if not

 

work like this will keep FE alive and well for us.

Thank you for your hard work, Gterl. Modders like yourself have taken FE and FE2 to a depth and breadth of coverage of WW1 that no other sim can match now, or be expected to in the future. Your dedication is very much appreciated.

Sorry, that i have seen this attempt to make a new terrain today the first time. Its an interessting project, but i think it should use its own heightdata than trying to form the Alps by using my old Vogesen terrain. I made a short and dirty run to creat a nearly 100% scale basic terrain of the Italienfront.

Only HDF and TFD file and the texturelist.ini are included. If you want to use this files to make a more correct terrain, then feel free to do so:
