Any ideas for jet powered P-38?

Recommended Posts

I know we have several artists that like to design their own "what ifs", wondering If anyone ever designed a jet powered P-38 Lightning.

Will like to see your ideas guys!

Whaaaaaaaaaatttt!?!?!?!?!??!?! This sounds completely off the wall insane. However, it does sound awesome! Cant wait to see some ideas lol

After doing a quick google search, I found out that Lockheed had done some things such as add the out wings of a P-38 to a different, jet powered body and came up with the L-133.

What if: to ensure greater survivability of its recon F-5G over Indochina, the French Air Force fitted them with two Turbomeca Palas under the wings.

I would say remove the engines but leave the tail boom. add a jet in the rear of the pilots pod with a nose inlet .kinda like a P-38 and a vampire merged into one.

Why not put two small turbojets at the wingtip, empty the engines housing and use them as fuel tanks or rocket launchers (like with the F-94 middle wings rocket pods ?)

Maybe not what you had in mind, but still the Porax 38 Magna Guard fighter from Star Wars is basically P-38...:

Let me see if I've got this right....you're proposing a jet-powered version of an aircraft that suffered from aerodynamic compressability at relatively low Mach levels?

In late versions (and early variants got conversion kits too) solved the compressability and buffeting problems, what I can't imagine is a jet engine installed on the place of the prop engines.

A jet-powered fighter with a critical Mach-number of 0.67 - doesn't sound that brilliant to me.
