Hurricane Harvey

Recommended Posts

harvey.jpg

As this monster in the gulf comes onshore it is developing to be the largest storm to hit the Continental US in decades. We hope you are all prepared for the worst and you stay safe if you're in the impact zone. Bringing 24 inches of rain to some parts of Texas this storm has the potential for catastrophic loss of property and lives. Our thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one of you impacted. Stay safe, stay sane, evacuate when possible, and come back to us in one piece.

CNN reported that people in a particular town who wished to stay behind should write their names and SSNs on their arms for easy identification later on.

I'm in the next state over and waiting for all that rain to come our way. I think all my people are safe and I'm happy for the survivors and my heart goes to out to everyone.

I have seen the pictures of Houston in the news now. Looks really terrible. Reminds me on the big flood catastrophes we had in 2002 and 2013. The behavior of the people is always the same. They are shocked, speechless, helpless and dont know what to do next. Its sad. Truely sad.

And the worst is still to come. The storm was bad, the flood of water is worse, but the worst you will face if the water is gone.  Mud, dirt, cadavers of dead animals, is smells everywhere, moskitos, million of moskitos. And if the mud dry out, then you get the dust, the ugly dust. And if you had back luck, diseases will come. Make sure you're vaccinated. Tetanus,  jaundice you can get.

It's still pretty difficult to imagine the displacement and damage Harvey has caused. My heart goes out to the people of Houston and surrounding areas. This should be considered mother nature's last warning about global warming since we didn't listen to her when she threw Katrina at New Orleans. It's time we all stand tall and take notice. A few hundred jobs in the coal industry and flaming off unwanted gases while drilling for oil without a recovery method for other uses isn't worth it especially since greener fuels are available. It's time to break America's smoking habit with fossil fuel and rip it off like a bandage. Buy stock in Tesla.

A Tesla driven with electricity made by nuclear power or coal energy is much more dangerous for the world clima than a car driven by petrol, diesel or Oxygen (fuel cell).

There is even a way to produce normal petrol from air. You need electricity (solar, wind, water power), then you need Carbondioxid CO2 and Hydrogenium H2. In a first step you can create Methan CH4 and Oxygen O2 from Carbondioxid CO2 and  Hydrogenium H2. In a second step you make synthetic Methanol CH3OH from Methan, the Methanol you can further make to C2H5OH Alcohol and in further steps you will get synthetic petrol. Its a proven technology. It based on the german systhetic petrol development from the 1920th, which used coal to produce high quality petrol (IN WW2 nearly all fuel for aircrafts in Germany was synthetic petrol). In 1970 the synthetic petrol based on only CO2 and H2 was invented. Its no technical problem to make it in this way. Only the oil industry and their lobby is shooting wild against this way.

Synthetic fuel is a way to make the electricity by green energy storable. Electricity you cant store really good. Batteries are a bad way. But sythetic Methan, or Hydrogenium, or sythetic petrol you can store easily. An if you burn systetic methan or synthetic petrol, you will set free only the CO2 which you has used earlier to creadt the systhetic fuels. Its a closed circle. Its good for clima. Its good for the world.

No. The world's climate is in no danger from nuclear plants. Worst case scenario is people near a plant might be in danger in specific cases. Yet the plant itself emits steam.

An electric car emits nothing. You can charge it with solar power, or wind power, or coal power, or literally anything. A team of mules turning a wheel even.

If petrol is so safe, I challenge you to sit in an enclosed space with a running internal combustion engine for a few hours. Then you will see how harmless it is. I refuse to drive with my windows open the air is so foul. I sit and imagine all the idiots around me with their windows open dying from cancer in a few decades from sucking it in all the time. There is also so much energy lost to heat and noise that is wasted instead of being used on powering the engine. Dreadfully inefficient.

Oh, and I HATE filling up the car. I dream of the day where I can just plug it in at home and leave every morning with a full charge. No more visits to those awful smelling filling stations and stepping in a puddle you thought was water, but it wasn't, and now your shoes smell like it for the rest of the day, as does the inside of your car...

An electric car emits nothing? Really? The exhaust of the electric car is the next powerplant. The waste of the nuclear powerplant is a nice gift for the generations to come. If the Neandertaler would had driven Teslas powered by eletricity of nuclear powerplants, we still had to care about their nuclear waste. This is ecological nonsens and inhuman. The most polution producing car is a Tesla driven by 100% coal electricity.

And by the way, Tesla car company never made profit, only losses. Its a toy of a super rich person, not the solution of the ecolocical problems of the world.

I just saw/heard the most retarded thing on FOX news. Well allright I can see tracy galleger calling all helos (and Choppers Army guys) Blackhawks. But he stated Navy FIGHTER pilots where heroicly jumping in the water to save people.

A big dis to the enlisted Aircrewmen.

Erik, with all due respect - that "mother nature's last warning" is nonsense.

global average temp has not changed in almost 20 years.

12 years without a cat 3 or higher storm hitting the US has never before occurred since records have been kept.

if you want to get off fossil fuels - you can't.  The technology isn't there unless you go nuclear (ok by me!). Renewable energy doesn't work unless it's backed by conventional power plants (or lots of very expensive batteries with short life-spans)

that's reality

cheers

Erik, you might as well give it up. Global warming is a common sense thing, if you want to understand it, and a large proportion of people just don't want to understand, or force a change. You actually don't need scientists to explain to you how it happened, or why. Humanity is addicted to belief; it will be our downfall. Interestingly, we will be the first species ever in Earth's long history to choose extinction over survival.

Give what up? I'm confused.

I'm never going to stop defending Earth. At this time there is only ONE planet we live on. People once believed the world was flat, they too came around to reality.

Convincing people who do not want to be convinced, Erik. Believe me, I write about warming all the time on my blog. Forgive me for sounding negative in my previous post, I'm not. I keep hammering at it with words, the only tool I have. Some people will never be convinced, or find an excuse not to do anything, that's the easiest thing to do. Trust me, I come in contact with the public every day in my job, and there is a whole new crop of flat earthers out there. It's sad, in the twenty-first century, but it's true. Like you, I will never give up the fight to save Earth from human vested interest, and ignorance. Some people will never listen, I don't confront them. I talk to the people who aren't entrenched, trying to get them to believe, and spread the word, but sometimes it's like beating your head against a wall. Especially now, when people are empowered by the head doubter in the White House. I tweet the orange one every day, but I'm not really speaking to him, he doesn't listen, I'm talking to the people lurking in the background, watching what others say...

Good point. But what exactly you had already done?

I for myself planted 15.000 trees with my own hands. My personal CO2 footprint is positive.

I know that you like the Tesla. Its a nice masterpiece of engeneering. But its a deadend development, like the track-wheel tank invented by W. Christie or the swing wing planes. You cant solve the problems of our world with it. If all people would drive Teslas we had much more problems. From where the whole additionally electrical power should come? From the socket?

The world must find a way to make renewable energy storable, whithout batteries.

Global climate change is fact. But it is fact since thousands of years. At the place were i write this lines at the moment was 10.000 years ago a glacier. Iceage. The ice is not gone, because the Neandertalers grilled to many Mammoths and blowed to much CO2 in the air. It is gone, because the climate has changed. 1.000 years ago the Vikings called Greenland Greenland because it was green there, not full of glaciers and ice. The climate is changing constantly. Our human influence in this development is marginal. Its like the attempt of ants to stop a rolling rock.

If you want to do something for the world, then buy products which are produced close to the place where you live, plant trees, dont try to make english lawn, but let flowers bloom and and and. Make the small steps. Not only speak. Act!!!!

The one thing people love to leave out of the climate equation is that we, humans, are the only species on the planet that creates fire. We have been for thousands of years, not hundreds. The argument that we had little or nothing to do with warming is specious. The key issue is actually Earth's relationship to fire before our arrogant, self-deluded species came along. Our influence is not marginal. The key difference between natural fires and man-made ones is that natural fires burn for a time and then burn out, because of rain, natural obstructions, or lack of fuel. Once they burn out, fire tends not to occur in that area for decades afterward. The modern man-made fires of power consumption and transportation are continuously burning fires. You can't keep dumping all that extra carbon into an atmosphere whose real practical depth is only 10 miles and expect all that extra carbon to have no effect. Yes, we must all do the little things that we can to help, but it is actually past the time where that could cure the problem. Bigger changes have to be made, or Earth will gladly do without us, and start over again. It's not a reset button you want to hit. All people are talking about is finding alternative sources of energy, renewable resources, non burning resources, for transportation, and the generation of electricity. I speak to my legal representatives often, because we need real changes made; the time for baby steps is long gone. I do all the little things you do, Gepard, but I have also learned to give it voice to everyone around me. Until you change minds, you are doing nothing.

I have a minimal CO2 footprint. The household produces zero garbage to landfills recyclable materials only. We run on solar panels which augments our power consumption from utilities. Last month during our hot season with air conditioning my electric bill was $13 and most of that was the connection surcharge and taxes. Our cars are electric and are charged from the solar panels. I worked on two teams, one each year of the Wallow and Rodeo-Chediski Fires. As volunteers we replanted and seeded roughly 800,000 acres, of course I was only 1 of many many people but I did my part.

I do act and I try help others do the same.

No.  I don't believe the hype and the phony politicized science that rewrites history and ignores thousands of scientists in their field with other explanations.

Warming stopped almost 20 years ago by the way.

the climate has been changing for longer than humans have been around.

We are not the cause and there is nothing that we can do that will have more than about a half degree difference.  Regular climate cycles are much larger.

And a hurricane in the Gulf? Imagine that....

      Texas, American South Central (1968-2018) Terrain
      August 13th, 2018 (1st Release)
      by Menrva

      >For Strike Fighters 2, Recommended Full-5 Merged
      This is a new, scratch-made terrain inspired by the original, smaller ASW terrain made by krfrge and reworked by Wrench.
      The terrain covers to a good extent the American State of Texas, as well as some Mexican States. Major rivers and a number of lakes have been hand-tiled and mimic Real World courses. Numerous target areas, such as civilian airports and onshore and offshore oil fields, have been added in order to expand playability, targets of opportunity and year range.
      This terrain features a fresh new 250m resolution heightmap (instead of the stock 500m resolution), allowing for greater details and precision in elevation changes; overall it provides the whole terrain with a better look.
      The terrain spans from October 3, 1968 to December 31, 2018; it is designed for a fictional scenario where Mexico is invaded by an alliance of Central American countries (namely Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala) supported by the Russians; the remnant of the Mexican military flees to the U.S. and fights alongside North American forces. However, users are encouraged to recreate whatever scenario they like, even outside the given time frame.
      Targets reflect Real World events as accurately as possible; for instance, some airfields and Mexican oil platforms will appear only after a certain year, according to historic changes. If you have SF2NA, American naval fleets can spawn in the Gulf of Mexico. All main targets have been placed accurately in their Real World locations.
      Ground Objects are not included. It's up to the user to find and obtain anything that can be useful for the proposed terrain's scenarios.

      >Credits (in no particular order):
      -krfrge, for creating the ASW terrain from which I drew inspiration; he also produced a tutorial for recreating SF2-like planning maps, which prompted me to work on templates and my own high quality planning maps. Thank you very much!
      -Wrench, for he reworked the original ASW terrain with additional targets.
      -swambast, who provided me with invaluable help in tracking and fixing common and uncommon bugs.
      -gerwin, whose TFDtool has proved to be essential in today's terrain making. If the terrain is pretty accurate to RL it's also because of him. I included his very nice Airfield 7+8 Addon Pack, too.
      -mue, for the improved shaders he made, which I have included and reworked for the terrain, and for the tools he made for SF2 modding.
      -luk1978, for the waternormal bitmap he shared at the SF2 screenshots thread. Your mods are very interesting!
      -MigBuster, I have included some of his great hi-res textures for runways.
      -Stary, for the hi-res tileset he made for the original ASW terrain.
      -Polak, for a few tiles I borrowed and reworked from his old PRDesert2 tileset.
      -Gepard, for his great tutorials about terrain making, in the SF1 Knowledge Base at CombatACE. It's a gold mine!
      -comrpnt, for his Approach and Airfield Lighting Pack mod packages for SF1 series, which I reworked and included.
      Although scratch-made, the terrain makes use of most objects and target layouts from Wrench's reworked ASW terrain; because of this, I included the ReadMe files from his original packages, to the end of giving proper credit to everyone involved directly or not.

      >Disclaimer:
      This is a freeware; yet it can be redistributed ONLY in other CombatACE mods/mod packages.
      Any changes to the terrain package's files and/or any copy-and-paste attempts of their contents are NOT authorized if you plan to release them in other mods. But permission might be granted to those who request it to me at CombatACE.
      This terrain may NOT in any way, shape or form be used in any payware additions.

      Update 4.502
      Attention Pilots!
      On this chilly Autumn day, we’re releasing a large update to IL-2 Sturmovik - update 4.502 is here! The star of this update is the new Hurricane Mk.II Collector Plane. This plane has the most modifications in our sim and with a wide range of weapon loadouts available this makes it 5 aircraft in 1. You get several variants including the IIa, IIb, IIc, IId and the one with the Soviet armament. The famous Dust Filter and Merlin XX engine with +14lb boost are also available. On top of all that, you can use the new bird in the Career mode right away - we added it to the Battle of Moscow and the Battle of Stalingrad careers. In addition to the Hurricane we have added the legendary С-47А "Skytrain" transport plane for the Battle of Normandy. The C-47 is AI only, but adds a new dimension to our missions and variety of Allied aircraft you will encounter in the sky. It is also great for mission makers who want to make supply runs an integral part of their battle. And finally, Battle of Moscow players receive new 4K quality skins for the Bf-110 E-2 thanks to our talented friend Martin =ICDP= Catney.

      On the technical front we have added a new and more realistic G-load physiology modeling system. This work was described in great detail in our Developer Diary #263. Additionally, a lot of work was done on all the aspects of the ground battles, significantly improving the quality and realism of Tank Crew engagements. There are many improvements to the pilot AI as well in this update. And finally, long-awaited Career mode improvements are finally starting to arrive.

      Main Features
      1. The Hurricane Mk.II Collector Plane is now available to its owners;
      2. The C-47A transport aircraft is now available in the sim as an AI enemy or ally in the Quick Mission mode. It can also be used in the custom missions as an AI transport aircraft;
      3. Female crews got female voices in the radio messages;
      4. Pilot physiology modeling has been improved significantly. This is described in detail in the Developers Diary #263;
      5. The zoom function now works correctly on VR devices with canted displays (Pimax) without using the performance-intensive Parallel Projection mode;
      6. New multiplayer scenarios, including Cooperative ones, are added for Tank Crew (you can create a server directly from the game by selecting a scenario or scenarios from the Multiplayer\Cooperative\TankCrew or Multiplayer\Dogfight\TankCrew folders);
      7. 4K external textures for Bf 110E heavy fighter (Battle of Moscow) are added thanks to Martin =ICDP= Catney;
      8. A-20 and B-25 bombers got new paint schemes with invasion stripes for different timeframes;

      Tank Crew Improvements
      9. Several missions of the Soviet tank campaign "Breaking point" were improved;
      10. Both tank campaigns are now available in Simplified Chinese, German and French;
      11. KV-1s got an additional paint scheme;
      12. It is now possible to use binoculars or personal weapons after pressing the "T" button (except for the M4A2 tank, where binoculars and personal weapons cannot be used simultaneously with a machine gun);
      13. It is now possible to designate a waypoint on the ground in a command mode while using binoculars;
      14. The enemy spawn point in Tank duel quick mission is correctly randomized after the destruction of a previous one if the player did not leave its spawn point;
      15. It is now possible to designate a target in a command mode while using binoculars;
      16. Fixed the issue that prevented the tank commander from using binoculars or personal weapons after pressing the "T" key if he does not have a machine gun to operate;
      17. Trying to fire the M4A2 machine gun while using binoculars or personal weapons won’t work;
      18. AI gunners use bracketing the target with fire when engaging the ground targets both for the range and (if the target is moving or there is a wind) the azimuth error. The size of the initial aiming error depends on the AI level, distance, target speed and wind;
      19. Ground AI gunners now have a certain delay in detecting and starting aiming at a new target depending on the AI level, distance and density of the group of enemy targets;
      20. Ground AI vehicles return the turret and/or gun to the traveling position only after a considerable time after the destruction or disappearance of the last enemy target from the field of view;
      21. Fixed an issue where detailed AI tanks (and especially self-propelled guns) could not hit the target at minimum distances (they were firing above the target);
      22. SU-152 will correctly stop for a shot and won’t drive towards the target without firing;
      23. The extra (maximum) AI level parameter has been removed from the Quick Mission, it caused errors in the AI functioning;
      24. Fixed a bug due to which the AI controlled tanks did not attack obviously visible targets in some rare circumstances;
      25. A bug has been fixed due to which there was no difference between aircraft or ground vehicle gunners with different AI levels;
      26. The enemies and allies have correct marker colors in tank Coop missions;
      27. Detailed damage buildings on Prokhorovka map are correctly displayed at far distances (the inner side of the walls was invisible far away);

      Airplanes physics, systems and damage model improvements
      28. 13mm German and 12.7mm Italian machine guns are no longer loaded with HE ammo only due to a bug;
      29. USAAF pilots wear G-suits only when piloting P-47D-22, P-51D-15 and P-38J-25 in September 1944 or later;
      30. A circular limit of the movable aiming mark of the Mk IID and K-14A gyro reticles has been implemented. The mark also bounces and stops at the working range boundary when the gyro mirror reaches its stop;
      31. The characteristic whistle of P-51 machine guns ports during active maneuvering that disappeared before due to an error is back now;
      32. P-51 and P-38 fighters won’t be pulled into a dive when their tail section is damaged;
      33. Ju-52 / 3m g4e cargo containers drop animation has been corrected;
