Quick question, how or why is it that some planes make the frame rate go down to a crawl?

first guess is high poly models. number of aircraft is another possibility as both screenshots seem to be WW2 based, and i will guess you have large formations going.

could you list some of the aircraft (other than B-17 in the second pic)

Off the top of my head: B-17's, A-Team's P-38's, YAP's P-51B's & P-47 bubble tops.

not fully optimized Lod0001 can add to the load as well. Lack of distance lods has always been a major issue

For our (Veltro and my)  try these numbers in the main ini:

B-17F:

[LOD001]
Filename=B-17F.LOD
Distance=1500

[LOD002]
Filename=B-17FLP1.LOD
Distance=2500

[LOD003]
Filename=B-17FLP2.lod
Distance=8000

B-17G:

[LOD001]
Filename=B-17G.LOD
Distance=1500

[LOD002]
Filename=B-17GLP1.LOD
Distance=2500

[LOD003]
Filename=B-17GLP2.lod
Distance=8000

see if that makes a difference. If not, revert to the originals

I know people don't like to do it, but with all WW2 multi-engine bombers, I turn off the exhaust effects. I never liked most, anyway, too heavy, and it does help me with frame rates. I also used Wrench's trick of changing the distance at which the different LODS appear.

I found a big slow down was caused by all the tracers in the air from all the gun turrets of a large bomber formation. I had a good FPS increase by re-sizing all the tracer.tga textures 3 or 4 times smaller to 30x30. Visually it doesn't make any difference. Also try reverting to stock TW tracer smoke effects if you have a modded one.

Also do this as again it worked for me:
