Spinners Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 Huge kudos to you Gepard for the effort you are putting into this. Quote
+Gepard Posted May 25, 2020 Author Posted May 25, 2020 I didn't like the area around the airfield yet. Thatswhy i changed the tiles around the airfield, played with the Croydon tile and so it looks now: The TOD houses of the stock London City tiles are still WIP. Dont care that they have windows in the roof. 3 Quote
Wrench Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 Quote Dont care that they have windows in the roof. "all the better to see the rain" love the airfields. how are you getting around the 3W need for specific airfield inis, with respect to taxi, take-off and landing positions? Did you have to build custom inis for each airfield? Quote
+Gepard Posted May 25, 2020 Author Posted May 25, 2020 Costum inis i made so far for Hawkinge, Lympne and Croydon, the other are modified airfield3 inis with mass take off mod. So i only must adjust the position of parking planes. 1 Quote
+Gepard Posted May 27, 2020 Author Posted May 27, 2020 (edited) I had not known, that the british side had camouflaged some airfields during Battle of Britain. Here is an air footage from 1940 of RAF Tangmere Thatswhy i have experimented with a camouflaged tile for airfields: RAF Tangmere: What do you think about this airfield tile. Should it stay in terrain or should i use the old (not camo) green version? Edited May 27, 2020 by Gepard 3 Quote
Wrench Posted May 27, 2020 Posted May 27, 2020 i'd go with the 'open space' version, even if it's not historically correct. It's easier to work with when targeting 1 Quote
+Sundowner Posted May 27, 2020 Posted May 27, 2020 (edited) Nah, go with the camo version, the more diverse the terrain the better, most large important structures ie factories etc also got camoflaged in some way, walls and roofs were usually done green and black, hell they even filled in a lake near me to prevent the bombers from using it as a navigation point for the nearby Crewe works/railyard and Rolls Royce factories. More instances here.... https://heritagecalling.com/2019/10/07/the-story-of-camouflage-during-the-second-world-war/ Edited May 27, 2020 by Sundowner Added link 2 Quote

+Gepard Posted June 3, 2020 Author Posted June 3, 2020 RAF Biggin Hill I had to move the airfields of Kenley, Biggin Hill and Rochford a little bit, to place them on a more or less correct point on the map. 7 Quote
Wrench Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 I just wish the larger versions of stary's hangars had an open version, so you could 'put stuff' in them This is looking REAL good, Gepard!! Quote
Wilches Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 Hope you give the same treatment on german airfields. The game's default runways are so unrealistic for the period. 1 Quote
+baffmeister Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 My memory is not the greatest but I think Biggin Hill got a couple of short paved runways in early 1940, prior to the fall of France. The airfields are looking very good! Quote
+Gepard Posted June 4, 2020 Author Posted June 4, 2020 This is an air footage of Biggin Hill during Battle of Britain. Biggin Hill was camouflaged, so that the runways were difficult to see. I dont know what they used for camouflaging the runways. Perhaps they painted them green or so. The contours of the imaginary fields were made by distribute tar on the meadow. I dont know wheter this kind of camo would be successfull to beat the Mk.1 Eyeball sensor of the bomber pilot, but on black and white footage the result is impressive. 1 Quote
+baffmeister Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 Great photo! The runway layout is what I remember from some earlier basic research. Quote
+russouk2004 Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 yeah...seen biggin hill...but not all those bomb craters etc...shows how risky airfields were Quote
+Gepard Posted June 4, 2020 Author Posted June 4, 2020 So RAF Biggin Hill will be in game: The camoflaged runways are better to seen in this screenshot. 7 Quote
+Sundowner Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 What size are your tiles? for grass runways you could just paint them on, although it would mean different tiles for each airfield.........hmm, maybe not, just thinking out loud. 1 Quote
