Hi there guys. You are doing a awesome job of revitalizing this terrain!

This sparked my interest to check in after ages.

And my hat's off to wrench for even bothering with my old edits of Ubon and NKP.

And yep i did n't bother with explaining why one needs to renumber / dupicate check target.ini entries 🙂 . But hey you are a Modder and worked it out.

These were done from screenshots of SEA Airbases from MS Flightsimulator and FS Scenery creator with a lot of help from Polak and later Swambast. Way back before the target area editor.  Was a fun time and your retouching of this stuff brings up fond memories.  Real life interfered with modding, but still have installs of SF2 on my pc. Time to dust them of.

Gepard:  think i used some of your Airbase objects back then and i think i even  made one retexture for NKP to give it that dark blakish tarmac look. However I'm really enjoying your expansion of the airfields / bases. Btw. did a Sampan  Mod for WoV too, and one sampan was skipped, the sail one LOD is 90° offset/moving sideways....  Been there done that, LoL

Looking forward to the  release!

It is still a long way till it will be finished.

And seems i did a early DaNang Wip in 2009 too, not released and source files most probably gone for good.

Tannethal, nice of you drop by!!! :drinks: Thanks for the kind words!!! You gave me (us) a great framework to work with.

Yup, Gepard has his hands full, and is doing a GREAT job on this!!

Too bad about the Da Nang layout. But, hey, it happens to us all!

Stick around for a while, see how things turn out!! 🙂

Not finished yet, but the finish line is close now.

I still have to do the airfield ini with the parked aircrafts for Da Nang and then i will make the never finished north vietnamese airfield Dong Suong.

A question for the wisdom of the forum: Where was the control tower of Da Nang AFB located?

img00283.thumb.JPG.2babf91f8170485ccae26949d6a2e20c.JPG

I placed it at the tip of the arrow. Is this correct?

The never finished airfield of Dong Suong

The Americans bombed it so often, that it never became operational.

Not too sure about your Da Nang tower location but my  reference's show it further down to the south on the old original pan, basically between those first 2 large hangars in your screenshot.

Originally the old French built tower was used for a short while before the US built their own wooden structured version which again was in time replaced with a more modern "concrete" structure.

All these US bases are very hard to depict accurately as they changed so much in the early years as various combinations of materials were used during construction then upgraded as need to suit newer aircraft coming the war zone, just the types and sizes of the revetments alone can be a complete nightmare

I thought, that i would be close to finish the terrain. But when i placed Monkey Mountain EW site close to Da Nang i found out, that i had forgotten to place TOD trees and objects to a couple of tiles.

Back to drawing board!

Monkey Mountain Facility and clearly to see, that the trees are missing.

Over the weekend i made the TOD files, which i missed the last time. Then i made 2 new tiles for the coastline and created for them the TOD files.

So the Da Nang area looks at the moment

img00286.thumb.JPG.66e3b7d9663aa7ee08378b2ba4a166e6.JPG

I reworked the coastline a little bit to come closer to the reality.

This is the look to the north, the peninsula in direction of Hue.

In the next days i will make final checks, to find mistakes. Then i will write the readme and give credit to all guys, whom files i was using in this terrain. And afterwards i will release DRV 2.1

When all runs fine release will be next weekend.

Here a look in the readme:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This terrain is written for SF2NA and SF2E or SF2I or SF2V.

I. Short description:

This terrain covers North Vietnam, parts of South Vietnam and Thailand.
The timeframe of the terrain is from 1964 to 1979.

DRV 2.1 is an updated version of DRV 2.0, which is a rework of DRV 1.4, a terrain which i made 20 years ago. I gave it a new tileset, reworked some tiling and some target areas.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I+. Update DRV 2.1

reworked the tiling of the terrain
reworked the placement of TOD objects on the tiles.
removed as many "potholes" in the landscape as possible

reworked all north vietnamese airfields to gives them a more or less correct layout
reworked all american air bases, to give them a more or less correct layout
renamed airbase Cam Thy to Tho Xuan
renamed airbase Hue to Phu Bai Combat Base
added the airfield Da Nang East (Marble Mountain Airfield)
reduced the number of SAM sites
relocated Gia Lam Airfield from west of Hanoi to east of Hanoi

II. INSTALLATION:

To run this terrain you need SF2NorthAtlantic and SF2 Israel or SF2 Europe or SF2 Vietnam.

Unzip the folders Objects and Terrains into your saved game folder ...ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2XXXX

Thats it.

If you have SF2Europe installed you must do nothing more.
If you miss SF2E and have SF2Israel you must open file

DRV.ini

with Notepad editor and look for the lines:

//CatFile=..\IsraelME\IsraelME.cat
CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat

change the entry into:

CatFile=..\IsraelME\IsraelME.cat
//CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat

If you have SF2Vietnam, but no SF2 Europe then open

DRV.ini with Notepad editor and look for the lines

//CatFile=..\VietnamSEA\VietnamSEA.cat
CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat

change the entry ino:

CatFile=..\VietnamSEA\VietnamSEA.cat
//CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat

save the file
