Did this ever happened?

Recommended Posts

I mean I'm not saying I know (I don't), but it's a VF-31 bird, so you can narrow it down that way.

I guess timeframe would be between 1994 and 1996. VF-31 was part of CVW-14 (tailcode NK) on USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) as second squadron (modex 2xx, 207 in your case) in that timeframe. Though I haven't found a single picture of this...not even yours with regular search and reverse-search. *shrug*

Sorry none of my own reference photos has that picture either, so it was probably a Photoshop job. I know they did experimental schemes, but even after a Google search nothing came up either.

it could be that this is one of the experimental camos on the F-14 like the ones below

the Navy did plenty of one offs with experimental or aggressor schemes. yes i said aggressor even though its a VF-31 line bird, sometimes they'd paint one up for a known exercise

plus frankly these days i'd trust the authenticity of a grainy photo over something crystal clear (and generated in DCS)...

I'm sure I had a book in the 90's which had colour plates of Tomcats "dressed" up in this way. I recognise the three bottom schemes in @RavenClaw's post.

The OP's from Texas!! (at least the IP is)

Now, if it was done with a southern Texas drawl ... that'd be ok. I have family in Dallas

Dude I've seen people post all of the time, and I never could trace their IP,  so good to know, but maybe it's a symptom of Texas schooling. I'm just saying though..

Mod Eagle looks so wrong on an F-14!

As for the Ferris schemes, ANFT.net has the detail, http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-colours.htm

Quote

"Additionally, in the late 1970's a few F-14s (VX-4: 159827/"41", 159829/"43", 159830/"44", 159831/"45"; VF-1: 158979/"NK100"; VF-2: 158985/"NK200"; VF-124: 159827/"NJ410"; PMTC: ??????/"201"; VF-101: 161135/"AD102" slightly different Ferris colours in 1981) were temporarily painted in the so-called Keith Ferris camouflage scheme"

I think that VF-101 jet with the white nosed Ferris pattern might be my favorite variation of the scheme now.

I think I did the bottom scheme for the TW or one of the F-14s. It's not wholly correct I admit, but it came out pretty decent. Yeah I did after checking my stuff.

Anyway I just don't like the TW birds for skinning to be honest with you. I mean if I was going to do a Tomcat skin, I'd do the TMF birds, where the mapping makes more sense than whatever TW came up with.
