Flaming Telephone Poles
ST0RM replied to Fubar512's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I think you've captured it nicely. From reading the various stories from pilots in Vietnam, once they had eyes on the missile, they followed the glow to see if it was guiding on them or not. Nice work! -
Thanks Vig. Ken Middleton had a pretty tight relationship with the Otis guys, so when the jets stopped through here on the way to AMARG, I had the camera ready. I sent him some of my shots for his site. BTW, 77-0102 was one of the two jets that first responded to the Twin Towers. Shame it wasn't preserved. Jeff

AIR REFUELING
ST0RM replied to Veltro2k's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
After I wrote that last line, I did start to wonder if it was possible to set up an A/R area, like the carriers have. In it, the tanker would simply orbit, with boom down or hoses out. Seems simple enough, but I'm not sure if it's in the code. -Jeff -
India cancels $550 million attack helicopter tender
ST0RM replied to Atreides's topic in Military and General Aviation
The Jedi Master hit it pretty well on the head. They slow roll everything. Everyday I look out across our ramp and see two Italian KC-767s, Italy 1 and 4. They're 2 years behind their delivery schedule. In the very first tanker contract deal, Boeing hired Darleen Druyun (and her family members) after she gave them the initial contract for the KC-X, before allowing other companies to submit a bid. On the second go, Boeing took their time and even requested extra time for their tanker proposal and still lost to Airbus. On this one, they filed a complaint, resulting in the cancellation of the winning aircraft. In all of this, who loses? The people actually needing the equipment in the field. With the C-17, their Long Beach plant was turning out aircraft faster than planned, so the USAF order was filled in less time than they estimated. Boeing began crying to the USAF that if they don't buy more aircraft, they would be forced to shut down the line. Luckily the CAF, RAAF and RAF bought aircraft. They are still asking for more aircraft to be purchased. As JM alluded to, the 787 is also behind by at least a year or more. This week, I read that Delta has canceled their order for the Dreamliner. Acquiring Mac-Air should have been a huge money pot for them. Instead, their decision makers are putting them out of contention with each failed bid. -
Got them all and they all rock! Eagle Engaged was written by Steve Davies and Doug Didley. Col. Dildey (Ret.) was my Vice OG Commander at Eglin, so he knows the Eagle. Smoke Trails is done by Jamie Hunter. He's pretty large in the aviation photojournalist world. I work through him on some photo submissions for a few magazines. Great guy! Lastly, Tomcat Bye-Bye, Baby is written more as a series of testimonies of former F-14 crews. It's an interesting insight as to the feelings of the guys/girls and their jet. How's that for a review? -S

India cancels $550 million attack helicopter tender
ST0RM replied to Atreides's topic in Military and General Aviation
I was going to refrain from bringing up the KC-767/KC-330, but it seems that the Airbus has become the tanker of choice. Another of Boeing's plans gone under. -
Makes for a decent What-if, but that's about all.

India cancels $550 million attack helicopter tender
ST0RM replied to Atreides's topic in Military and General Aviation
Boeing sounds like a broken record. On how many programs are they going to request an extension for? Seems the other companies had no problems with getting their proposals in on time. I'm for the American products, but Boeing's on time track record over the past few years is horrible. They do it to themselves, but it affects many more. -
Building new airbases
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Awesome! I'd really like to see Ramstein get some love. -
False. I actually like the PS3 as it's more capable and user friendly in relation to the XBox 360. The games on the XBox are just more to my liking. The person below me has never been in MY kitchen.

Building new airbases
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Ok, so if something is already pretty far along and done by people much more experienced than I, then I'll just wait and move on to something else. I may still try the object placement via the targets.ini though to try and see what I can come up with. Thanks much for all the replies and info! -
Looking at some of the stock airbases we've got in various forms in this series, has always left me with wanting more. With the few 3rd Party airbases released (Korat and a few others), I see that custom bases can be built and used. What tools do I need to do this? My hopes are to build some proper WP/Mid Eastern bases with the fighter "Christmas trees" leading from protective shelters to the runway. Also, dual parallel runways. Is it as simple as moving two bases right next to each other? While the AI wouldn't utilize them properly, at least they would look the part. Any tips or ideas are appreciated. -Jeff

A civil mod for TK's sims
ST0RM replied to Gepard's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
You could even include some of the Army National Guard helos with a Bambi bucket or MAFFS C-130s. Or even civil Coast Guard missions. -
Looks to be a scripted mission, like the B-17 gunner in the CoD:UO or the AC-130 mission in CoD 4. The Blackcat PBY-5s were some crazy dudes. They, along with the Air Apache B-25s, are some of my favorite units from WWII.

Ghost, I'd gladly take you up on your offer, but I'll be back in the sand for a large part of the late Spring and Summer. Otherwise you might have had an entire -135 crew to host. Drink a cold one for me, will ya?

Modern F-16 cockpit
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Ok, not a MF cockpit. My mistake. What I did notice is that the later cockpit does have the left MFD working with the radar. It seems I've broken mine with the transfer. Right now I'm going through line by line to figure out how to get it reactivated. Well, with that. Is there an Avionics70 capable F-16 cockpit with all the bells and whistles? I don't recall one being done, but more of just a quick ini edit to change GroundMode to GM, etc... -
I've put together an install with only Greek and Turkish Air Forces using the Greece map by ansons2, pitting these two Med forces against each other. So far I've had some interesting Phantom on Phantom engagements as well as Viper vs. Viper. Anyhow, I wasn't happy with the basic MF F-16C pit as I wasn't getting a CCIP or much else beyond basic instrumentation. It was created using the 60.avionics. BTW, this is not a knock on there great work. Getting back to my question. Are the MFD's hardcoded to display the static SMS and radar screens or has someone been able to getting them to function? In my experiments, I've given the F-16C pit all of the avionics from the WoI Netz (tweaked of course for the later F-16C Block), while retaining the later cockpit style/layout. It works great but I would like to get the MFD's to function. The stock Netz' cockpit does have a working radar on the lower screen, as well as the old analog SMS display on the left display, but from past experience, I recall this being a hard-coded function in the cockpit itself and not an ini thing. Any ideas? Cheers!

I'm not even British, but the more I've learned about the TSR.2 program and it's very abrupt end, makes me sick. The amount of money wasted and then discarded when they chopped up the airframes. Allowing 219 to be used as a target on a bombing range? At least someone had enough sense to hang onto 220 and 222. The Arrow is another case in stupid political interference.

J79 Exhaust Effects
ST0RM replied to Spillone104's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
Awesome mod. After just refueling F-4s, this is exactly how I saw it. Nice work. -
Got turned onto this over the weekend. A friend up on KC has it installed at his business and he and his employees all play at lunch. I'm on my free 2 week trial and will subscribe. I also played hours on Air Warrior when it was free on AOL. Tried playing it payware for about a year after it went that direction, but the BS factor got too high, so I dropped it. I'm currently using ST0RM135 in AH.
