Oh no.

I know that a lot of you subscribe to IAPR as I do, so I thought I would share this. I made an index of sorts to make it easier to find articles rather than having to pull each volume off the shelf and check the back. This is version 1, next I will add an index for all of the issues of Wings of Fame. This was created in OpenOffice and saved as an MS Excel doc, so let me know if there are any formatting problems. TMF Crusader Questions
column5 replied to gbnavy61's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
We will get out a small update for the D and E to fix that problem. No ETA but hopefully soon. Sorry for the oversight. -
I wonder what a real general like Curtis LeMay would say about this?

That doesn't really narrow down the list of things he shouldn't do...

Voodoo Over Europe and Madagascar
column5 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
True, sound tactics overcome disadvantages. Great points. When the planes are ready, it will be fun to run some "what-if" scenarios. A possible counter-tactic would be for the Soviets to attack from well below the US bombers, forcing the Voodoos (not sure what kind of lookdown capability they had) to come down to engage them where the Voodoos disadvantages would be more of a factor. -

Fair-Use Modding
column5 replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
While I am generally in agreement with my colleague Wrench, The, I think that once a mod is released under a fair-use license it should be impossible to revoke that license. To allow that would defeat one of the major goals of the program, which is to ensure long-term availability and continuity. I'm only one voice though so there would have to be a general consensus on the matter, and the CA ownership would probably have to issue an official policy. -
Fair-Use Modding

Thanks guys, you are tops. -
I wanted to raise the subject of fair-use modding again since our membership is steadily growing and many new modders have come onboard since we talked about it last. Basically, many of us in the SF modding community are promoting the idea of "fair-use" modding. That is, when we release our work, we do so with minimal restrictions. Usually we only request that proper credit be given and that our original readme files be included if our work is incorporated into other projects. No need to ask for permission to modify, no need for secret handshakes to download, etc. I'd like to encourage any new modders to consider this and sign up if you are agreeable! It is one of the best things we can do to keep our simming community strong and growing. More info here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=26131

This situation only highlights the disdain that capun and some of his ego-stroking jackals have for the community. There was no reason for them to do what they did other than to attempt to control people and force them to beg for access to their site. It amazes me that anyone would lick their boots in that way. As a long-term strategy, it would be good if we, as a community dedicated to having fun, could replace as many of their models as possible with new, fair-use models available to everyone without restriction on use and without the need to kiss buttock and pass "screening" to get them. The more we can marginalize them (capun and charlie, mainly) the better things will be for everyone, as innocent users won't have to go through this sort of nonsense.

Yes. Definately underappreciated.

Voodoo Over Europe and Madagascar
column5 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yeah, F-101 is a very interesting story for those that haven't read much about it. It was designed to SAC requirement for a long-range escort fighter, but SAC phased out that requirement in the late 1950s and all SAC fighter wings transferred to TAC. Its just as well, because the F-101 stood no chance in a fight against MiG-19s and 21s due to its heavy weight, lack of maneuverability and dangerous departure tendency at high AoA. So the F-101A and F-101C went to TAC and the only role they could fill was as a nuclear bomber. That was the responsibility of the F-101s stationed in England. The Voodoo really didn't find a niche until the interceptor and recon versions were developed, where its high speed and excellent rate of climb were taken advantage of. -

I think Sting is among the best male vocalists. Also Peter Gabriel.

So far, battery life has not been a problem and it seems quite durable. Apple has done a good job on previous products making them scratch resistant, and the iPhone seems like it is going to be as good as my 5th Gen iPod in that respect. I got to use the GPS functionality yesterday and it was very convenient. I was driving around to various auto parts stores looking for a gasket, and had been unsuccesful at AutoZone and Advance. I pulled up the YellowPages app, clicked the "target" button to get it to geo-locate me, then searched for auto parts and got a list of the stores closest to my current location. Was very nice!

OK, after using it for nearly two full days, here is a "first-impressions" sort of review. First, to set up the context of this review, I am coming from a Motorola Razr which I consider to be among the worst phones I have ever owned from a usability and interface standpoint. Doing anything with it other than basic phone calls is not worthwhile. I also carry a company Blackberry to get my Exchange email and a 5th gen iPod 30-gig. My objective in buying the iPhone was to combine all three functins into a single, easy-to-use device. In short, mission accomplished. The user interface on the iPhone is one of the best I have used. Its responsive and intuitive. None of its functions are difficult to access or use. The phone is straightforward and easy to use. The "buttons" are large and easy to target. The phonebook is also easy to use and manage. This was a major pain on the Razor and I'm very happy with what the iPhone offers in this regard. The iPod functionality is very nice. Using coverflow to browse through albums is not only easy, but kind of fun and cool. The drawback here is that the highest capacity iPhone is 16-gig, and you have to pay $100 extra for that capacity. I have ~20-gigs of my CD collection currently ripped so I can no longer carry all of my music with me like I can on the iPod. Just means I have to be more selective (maybe I don't need to take Adam Ant and Thomas Dolby with me everywhere). Using Safari on the iPhone is quite cool, and is the first web browser on a handheld device that I would call useful. The multi-touch controls do a nice job of helping you navigate and zoom in/out on the small but very sharp and clear screen. The iPhone can connect to 802.100b/g networks in addition to the 3g network, so as you roam around and add WiFi networks (such as at work, home, the gym, Starbucks) you start to build up a fairly wide area of even higher performance Internet access. Finally, iPhone 2.0 supports Exchange ActiveSync so I can access my Exchange mail, calendar and contacts. This all works very nicely and takes less than 2 minutes to set up. The major drawback is that when syncing with exchange, you cannot sync any personal calendars or address books from other services--ActiveSync overwrites them. I guess the thrust of this overview is that Apple has done a nice job putting all these features together and making them easy to use. That is really the key IMO and makes the iPhone worth the price if you need all of these features.
