ValAstur Posted Monday at 11:32 PM Posted Monday at 11:32 PM (edited) The german Luftwaffe was seeking a smaller alternative to the bigger and heavier Tornadoes and Phantoms, especially for CAS-Missions; but it also should have some A2A-Capabilities. The Alpha Jet was taken into consideration, but deemed not suitable for the task imposed. The Mirage F1 was also taken into consideration initially, but rapidly dropped because of the Luftwaffe's "Single-Engine-Doctrine" after the Starfighter-Desaster. In 1976, after having signed an accord between the british, the french and the german government, german pilots had the opportunity to evaluate the aircraft. Two airplanes, a single- and a double-seater, were especially commissioned at 17 Squadron, RAF Brüggen. The results were satisfying and the german government signed an order of 36 single- and 8 double-seater planes, taking the GR.1 as a base. First deliveries started in 1978, being the JBG31 the last one to get it's aircraft in 1979.
