greyman Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Loved flying the tomcats. their the closest thing to being an airborne sniper. Since i dont have to follow BVR most engagement ends before we get to merge, sometimes i send my squad home and allow one to get close for a dog fight. This time i decided to Fly the Flanker went on an intercept mission with 4 Mig-29, 2 Su-27, Mig25 and an F15BAZ. on an intercept mission. as chance will have it was against 8 FA-18(primary) and 8 VF41 F14D (escort) carrying my Custom 95% accurate AIM-54C, 120B(navy) and AIM9. As soon as we get to within 50nm I found out how my Targets have felt. The Mig doesn't have a visual RWR and i'm not still trying to see the capabilities/limitation of its APHID/ATOLL. RWR screems, hit the deck early on forcing me to brake the lock. was the messiest battle i ever had. luckly i got to evade atleast 4 AIM54 from the two cats behind me. One after the other my squad is being tailed by the cats. they got the 25 first, then the f-15(which i believed engaged the f-14's head on as it always do). My wingman got the first hornet as the eagle was shot. Went high and dove back on another bug. was able to miss a cat on the descent. After a long battle i manage to shot 5 bugs down. RC called MA told my remaining comrades to RTB but both r engaged by the cats. i still have a bug on my tail. I have to save atleast one of my wingie. The lead cat fired his gun thankfully it missed. It lines itself for another pass. this gave me a chance t0o get close and i let off my remaining seeker. Shack! (must be too engaged with my wingie). Went over to my other wingie still ignoring the bug chasing after me. Was setting up the cat for a gun kill when suddenly An orange glow illuminates the cockpit. Checking the logs later on i found out that a cat slipped behind me with the bug. As i was on full AB the sidewinder didnt have a problem tracking my plane which is flying level and straight waiting for the last nm for a gun kill on the bait. Made me realized that i was too dependant on the phoenix. Pic is of my wingman which was also shot down after me. Quote

dare2 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) Not very spectacular, but a few tricks i use to carry over the Escort mission properly. First i will use my radar to detect, locate and ID the flight to be protected. This allows me to keep track of them and using the map, position my flight tactically when the adversary are approaching. Time to act... Another Escort mission, i prefer those to Sweep as they involve protection of other aircraft, more chalenging tactically. I find the F-8 very well made, pleaseant to fly and performant, to tell the truth i really prefer it to the F-4. Here's my No4 shortly after launch. Merry X-Mass and Happy New year to all.
