I started an upgrade for the Desert Target Zone terrain/ini.edit/tileset whatever it is, and thought I should ask this question. WOI has a lot of very nice building objects compared to SFP1/SF2 and I would like to extract some of these objects for Desert Target Zone. Presently, Desert Target Zone is using many of the stock buildings for more than one purpose and I would like to reduce that as much as possible. I understand that lifting aircraft and weapons from TW games for free download is considered a no-no but what about basic building objects? Personally, I don't think it's a big issue but would like some other opinions. I also plan on adding some nice objects from Wingwiner and CA_Stary to supplement the current Factory Place objects. Any opinions appreciated. :salute:

Basically, any LODs are considered non-distributable, doesn't matter what object it is.

curious since i have a similiar issue what about skins like the Euro 1 skins in WOE and transfering them to SF2E? im doing a project for mine with taking those skins transfering them and turning th tail codes and nums black for an accurate Euro 1 scheme in my SF2E with any appropriate unit. would that not be uploadable when im done?

im not messing with the LODs just the bmp's and tga's

As FC said, LOD's are the limit according to TK.

As far as what you do in private with your mods though, its up to you.

Hi FC,

What is so special about LODs, that doesn't exist in other files?

LOD files are the "big" stuff, the main thing... the aircraft and cockpits, tanks and all other objects.

If somebody starts to distribute that stuff for free.. go figure... there would be no need for anyone to buy new TW games if he can download the essential stuff...

Skins, Decals and INI's can be shared IF they are changed/modded.

LOD's cant be changed legally and thus cant be shared.

An interesting thing I thought of: Could a terrain edit like Desert target zone access LODs that are used in the Israel terrain like he wants without extracting them if the user has SF2I merged?

Sure, as long as the ini points at the correct CAT file.

I was wondering about that as well. Don't think I will go that route with DesertTZ but the numerous desert type objects in the IsraelME terrain make it a natural fit for a new desert terrain with a bunch of fictional countries. [ in about a year, based on my current progress with the terrain editor. ]

Probably not, as using the cat pointer to the IsraelME cat causes all sorts of intersting and undesirable results.

However, IF ...and in 08 levels is what I've experimentated with, and a big IF, ALL the terrain tiles, tgas, bmps, hm_bmps and other terrain objects ARE present, there's a 50% chance it'll work. (btw, it never did before)

Of course, the entire Desert_Types.ini would need rewriting to include ALL the new IsME terrai object types. Also, cross checking the 2 data ini, to make sure they're current in reference to shaders, HeightMapping, etc.

Why don't you give it a try, and let us know what happens??

What do you mean? In terms of freely distributing them, the answer is still no as far as I can tell.

Yes, it was just a dilemna I had a few days ago when I did my fictional F-104I for SF2.

Now the aircraft LOD's are already in the game so were not needed in my upload but I had to point to an alternative pit (I went for the Thud's) as to give it a true 'Zipper' pit would have required the extraction of the cockpit LOD (and a whole lot more) from a Series One game. Freely distributing the cockpit LOD wouldn't have got any leechers very far.

Slightly OT - It makes me bloomin' mad to see any Third Wire game downloadable anywhere it shouldn't be .

Forum software seems a bit touchy today...

Since TK released the F-104 as its own FREE add on then its not a problem.

Yep, that OLD free F-104 and its pit should be fair game.

But extracting any of the new F-104's from Strike Fighters 2 Europe etc. and sharing them is forbidden.

eraser: brother, don't I know THAT one!!! Forgot to mention, don't forget the check the IsrealME.cat to see if the Desert airfields inis, lods, bmps and tgas are there. Without them, it simply won't work.

With reference to 1st Gen stuff, specificly to the Zipper pit, as it's readily availalbe...there' should be a need for it's inclusion. People can easily extract the bits and move them. In fact, I seem to recall creating a full "parts list" and posting it here somewheres.

I was just wondering...how did you guys integrated some TK stuff in the ODS campain? Like 3 or 4 planes. You asked him authorization? Or it was somekind of financial agreement?

None of Third Wire's core files are contained within any ODS distribution. The .ini files, and .bitmaps that are used with existing TW models, are all either, modded or unique to ODS.
