Well I'm glad the thread isn't a waist of time after all.

 

Well I'm interested in how it will be played out as far the story goes. So many people, I think need to see this, its not about race or anything its about overcoming something many people said could never be done. It's about not giving up, and winning against the odds. ... (sounds like something Charlie Sheen would say ... but I didn't mean it that way) I like these kind of stories where an underdog does something that blows people away. Where the Redtails never lost an friendly to another enemy fighter ... they lost some to ground fire but then again there wasn't anything they could do about it.

 

But Hollywood has a funny way of freaking things up .... see example: Dragonball Z, and so many other movies.

 

I've also heard there was all an black battalion or something that was at the battle of the bulge or blitzkrieg or something I'm not sure but that's something I'd like to look into as well.

 

I'm also wondering if women played a role in any of these wars. I remember hearing about the WASP program and of course the women stateside filled the factories and baseball diamonds. Put I'm still wondering if women played a major role in military history.

I love the real story I'm just worried that it will be "Pearl Harbored" and ruined. from a historical point of view I love the real story.Another of my favorites in a similar vein is the movie Glory,loved it.

That's my fear too. I don't think I've seen an 'airplane' movie since Battle of Britain that hasn't been screwed by major factual inaccuracies or dodgy CG or something... Still wanna see it though.

The cheezy CGI (Its Lucas Film CGI so it prob aint to chezy) is a lot cheaper and safer than putting up 10+ P-51 Mustangs and the rest of the national and international treasure War Birds,however; the 3/4 scale Thunder Mustang I think could have pulled it off like the mock M-1 in Courage Under Fire which were British Centurions shipped from Australia with sheet metal added to make them resemble M1A1 Abrams.

 

I can never get enough of WWII movies. Went and visited a RED TAIL WARRIOR about 10 years ago in an assisted living condo. He had great stories I wish I could remember his name, damn me, he was a true American G.I. Joe Hero. Those pilots were the best of the best because the bar was raised to an almost unreachable level. Thats why they lost no bombers when assigned escourt duty.

Note the six roadwheels rather than the Abrams' seven, fume extractor correctly mounted on the first third of the gun barrel rather than the last third as on Chieftain-based Abrams fakes, and the Centurion Mark V rear stowage bin presumably left fitted to represent the Abrams' Honeywell gas turbine.

Such a movie I'd like to see made since long would be rather about the impressive story of the Nisei of 442nd RCT and 100th Hawaiian Battalion. The legendary, most decorated US unit ever, made of American-born soldiers of Japanese ascendency, who fought well and bled hard even while their parents were interned in humiliating conditions, and themselves permanently suspected of being Tojo's spies. In the same time one of the most disgusting and most glorious page of American History. During one of their toughest fights in the Vosges mountains, the Nisei rescued a surrounded Texan battalion who couldn't believe they had had been saved by Japs. I don't think that such a movie has ever been directed. May I mistake?

I don't find much wrong with them, although at times they appear to be overpowered, hence the comments that it looks more like a SW dogfight than a WWII one.

 

But a comparison to Pearl Harbor isn't very meaningful. It's like trying to pick a valedictorian based on who's furthest away from the guy who's dropping out!

It looks like in old Discovery Channel documentaries where they'd spliced a bunch of WW2 footage into one long sequence. It's more action packed than IRL but then it needs to be.

There was a Japanese-American group that fought in Cassino. Heavy loses, think they received an award for their actions. Don't know any women who fought though.

Looks like CGI from Jane's WW2 Fighters game.

However,it is a great tribute to a bunch of highly criticized WW2 "HEROES".

Yes,these guys were all "HEROES".

There are a lot of bomber crews that made it home because of these guys.

The Group CO(Col. Benjamin O Davis) would have any pilots A$$ that took off chasing enemy aircraft to get 'kills'. These guys were ordered to chase off the enemy aircraft and then get back to the bombers immediately.

They also did fighter sweeps and ground attack missions as well.

They painted the entire tails and spinners of their aircraft bright red so that everyone would know who was doing the escorting,sweeping and bombing.

As it was,most American service people did not know that these guys even existed until many years after the war.

Even if the combat is 'cheezy',I'm curious to see if the story line tells the true story or the 'Hollywood' version.

I had read an interesting short story in comics about the unit, with interlude pages depicting the racist thoughts of the Nazi supermen they were tangling with ("They have downed some of the Sturmbock... The beginners luck... Apes can learn many things... But not everything..."), as well as the racist thoughts of some Dixie gunners who had heard of absurd rumors about a unit of "flying darkies", and couldn't imagine that these were the Red Tails fighters covering their asses. Contempted as well by their friends and foes, the Tuskegees prevailed nonetheless.

I saw an interview with Lucas where he said he had a hard time getting this film made because it's relatively big budget but has no white stars. They felt it wasn't worth more than a few million because that's all it would make...not many would pay to see a film of almost totally black actors, just a couple of white actors in minor roles. He also said the few surviving members left who saw it were supportive. So obviously any inaccuracies they felt were more than compensated for by the rest.
